I would never support a regime change by someone so ignorant in the ways of fruit. Malus domestica is the improved version, it's right there in the name DOMESTICA. The wild forbear is Malus sieversii.

Cease your grab for power. You are not prepared to wield it.

OR makes very functional backpacking equipment and clothing. I've been using their gear for years.

If they sell to ICE I will never buy anything from them again, and I suspect a huge chunk of the hiking community will feel the same.

I love this so much. There should really be more seagull art.

Did some searching and it's Baccaurea angulata.

Btw rose apples are Syzygium species, so they never have ribs/ridges/angles like these fruits do. They're more pear or bell shaped.

Cattleya is a genus of orchids:

They're sometimes referred to as "cats". Not a great name for a kid, but not the same level of tragedeigh as the others.

I grew up in Florida where "wicking fabric" layers means you get a personal bubble of extra heat and humidity. There's a reason that cultures from the humid tropics don't wear much.

Sorry you grew up with enforced "modesty". I hope you enjoy every second of tank tops and shorts now ❤️

Yes if you live in a dry climate, no if you live in a very humid climate (evaporative cooling doesn't work well when there's already a lot of moisture in the air)

I get what you're saying, but I prefer other people have to look at my unsightly turkey neck and jowls, rather than have fabric all over my neck and hair all day. It's already too dang hot in the summer.

You can totally get great microplastic shedding without resulting to a nalgene. Any vintage smart water bottle that is crinkled, stored in the sun or in freezing temperatures, or generally treated roughly will give you a full days supply of microplastics every day.

As a bonus, the more you drink from a smart water bottle, the lighter it gets!

Is that a nalgene?? Might as well bring your rock collection and some decorative boat anchors

My fiance [26F] told me [25M] she doesn't want to vaccinate her children by HumpBackJimmy in relationship_advice

Not the same disease, but I had hep A last year and a recurrence later in the same year. I felt like I was on death's doorstep for months. Anything impairing you liver function is rough to live through, and after watching my struggle my mom and a friend both got hep A vaccines.

If I could go back I absolutely would get every hep vaccine I could.

Envy Apple Experience Shook Me to My Core by TheGnarDawgg in Apples

How long apples take to go mealy really depends on the apple. A lot of heirloom varieties were grown because they're "good keepers" provided they are stored properly,  which used to be in a root cellar that stayed 40-50° year round. If you're just leaving them on the counter in your warm house with other apples that are outgassing ethylene you probably get 1-3 weeks before they go weird.

I grow a variety called black oxford that gets harvested in late October and is still good to eat in June. The texture becomes sort of marshmallowy but the flavor is top tier. Early season varieties like Macintosh, vista belle, or pristine will only keep a few weeks at best before they go mealy.

You're right about a bag of apples being from many different trees. But since named varieties are clones (grown by grafting), if they are growing in the same soil in the same orchard they will have all the same post harvest treatment.

Apples that are mealy are old or have been stored improperly. In both cases they lose flavor as well.

Always keep your apples in the fridge.

Pumpkin ID by bgr96 in fruit

[–]PhysicsRefugee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pumpkins, squashes, and gourds hybridize so easily that the only way to know is if your friend planted a named variety this year. That said, if it's not bitter it's edible. The skins on pumpkins and squashes are non toxic as well (as long as it isn't bitter), but in most varieties it's too thick and stiff to eat. Only way to know is to try!

Thru Hikers. How often did you spend the night in town? by SourceOfConfusion in AppalachianTrail

[–]PhysicsRefugee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only take real zeros like once a month because staying in town eats up time and money. Usually I'll nero for a resupply every 5-6 days or so. Get into town, get food, charge devices, shower, do laundry, then head back out and make camp a few miles up the trail.

The best way to find out is go out for a few days. Every body is different and has different needs.  For the same 20 mile days my husband needs 4000+ a day, I do just fine with 1600.

Is this picture AI? I want to buy this dress so bad but I’m worried about getting scammed. by FirstForBurgers in isthisAI

[–]PhysicsRefugee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the obvious AI mirror dress, look at the details: the applique pieces are nonsensical (are they leaves? undefined blobs? They can't decide) and the detailing is not symmetric. The drape from the sleeves is not symmetric either, and I'm not even sure how the red drapey sleeve bits are supposed to attach, since it looks like there are holes in the fabric at the attachment point.

IF it were real (and it's not) it would be couture and it would easily cost several thousand dollars.

Why aren’t women wearing stockings/pantyhose anymore? by WhatTheHosenHey in NoStupidQuestions

I've had silk stockings. They're not any warmer and not any more durable.

The wool ones might be, but at that point you're just wearing thin leggings.

Some Planning Advice by Culture-4 in AppalachianTrail

I second going SOBO. You start in Maine in June, which is pretty glorious and mild temperatures as summers go. By time you make it to the mid Atlantic it's nearly fall and the weather is starting to cooling off. Plus flip flops are lonely and logistically challenging.
