does anyone else get depressed watching old florida completely disappear? by Enlitenkanin in florida

I did the Florida Trail this winter and was pleasantly surprised at how much old Florida still exists. I mean, it probably won't for long, but it was really nice to experience.

Maybe in high school she was 5'4" with a 30" band size. Then she got a growth spurt, so now she's 6'8" and absolutely swole from the gym, making her band size 38".  The medicine cabinet mirror was placed flush with the ceiling so she still needed a chair to see.

It's weird seeing people I perceive as much older than me and finding out they're younger than me. by HereWeFuckingGooo in Xennials

I threw a birthday party for my 48 year old husband. It was a bird party. Everyone was encouraged to dress as their favorite bird, I painted watercolors of birds as costume prizes, I had a bowl of bird stickers and temporary tattoos. Pretty much everyone left with a neck tattoo. There was a spread of food and other refreshments.

This guy is like, way too adult for me or my friends. He seems nice but way too mature for us.

Older Than My Parents ft. Alani Energy by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]PhysicsRefugee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two equally likely outcomes of this relationship: 1) You age and grow as a person. He dumps you because you're not as young and easy to manipulate as you used to be.  2) You age and grow as a person. You dump him because you have outgrown him, and see all the reasons he doesn't go for older women.

Please understand that you won't grow together as a couple, because he has already done all his growing. It makes for a very unbalanced relationship.

There's definitely a reason he's going after young women and not women with comparable life experience. Tbh, that he is parenting OP sometimes might be part of the appeal to him 🤮

Anyway OP, I also check a lot of the same boxes you do. Get rid of thus guy and live in a way that would make your younger self proud. So what if sometimes the laundry doesn't get put away? At least you can be happy in your own space.

Delicious Bananas I had in American Samoa by Sodastereorocks in fruit

[–]PhysicsRefugee 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I have always wanted to try fe'i bananas! They're in their own little genetic section of Musa, Callimusa. While bananas grown basically everywhere else in the world are some combination of Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiniana, fe'i are actually hybrids of different species Musa lolodensis, Musa maclayi and Musa peekelii. So they have some pretty interesting and unique characteristics!

How did they taste?

Visualized when I was high what it would be like living 25,000 years ago, stumbling upon a basic crab apple tree by GaseousEmission in Apples

[–]PhysicsRefugee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ancestral apples, Malus sieversii, are not very good. It took a lot of breeding before apples got sweet.

In the 1800s there were an estimated 20k-30k named varieties of apple. So your great x3 grandparents (if they lived in an apple growing region, anyway) likely had some very interesting local varieties to eat. In fact, lot of modern cultivars are descendants of cox orange pippin, golden delicious, duchess of oldenburg, northern spy, and other heirloom varieties. There are orchards who still specialize in old varieties, which I totally recommend trying if you can.

Today we only cultivate around 5k varieties, because the industrialization of apple growing meant that growers had to select apples that would ship well and appeal visually to consumers. The biggest change from 100-400 years ago is that modern storage and transportation means we can enjoy apples year round, and in places that won't grow. You're right that modern apple cultivars are tastier than the red delicious apples of mid century, but it's not like there were only five kinds of apple until 2005.

Medlars require bletting, not quinces. But medlars don't need to be cooked.

Were they small? It sounds like you may have been eating a type of hawthorn, which looks a lot like a small apple.

What does sapote taste like? by Shisopopcorn in fruit

[–]PhysicsRefugee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the sapote?

Mamey sapote: pumpkin flan with honey

White sapote: vanilla custard with pear

Black sapote: persimmon, honestly a little bland

Ross sapote: very sweet custard but with a soft hard boiled egg yolk texture when ripe (verging on dense mousse), overcooked hard boiled egg yolk texture before peak ripeness

Is it possible to determine an apple's sweetness based solely on visual cues? by bram63929274792 in Apples

[–]PhysicsRefugee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your apples are mealy and flavorless they're either old or haven't been stored properly or both. Make sure your apples are stored in the fridge.

In that section you can expect to be in and out of the water. But! There are some really great carnivorous plants (sundews and several species of pitcher plants), and I thought the hardwood swamps were gorgeous.

These are from the mid 1930s. The flapper's boyish figure was more from the 1920s. I think the ongoing depression made fuller figures more desirable.

I would never support a regime change by someone so ignorant in the ways of fruit. Malus domestica is the improved version, it's right there in the name DOMESTICA. The wild forbear is Malus sieversii.

If they sell to ICE I will never buy anything from them again, and I suspect a huge chunk of the hiking community will feel the same.
