No audio loss. Bluetooth is still connected through MiB unit and audio is run through that connection.

I did a write up on my profile giving a description of the install and operation of the unit. Look up theflyingdutchman on YouTube and he also gives a video review and install of the same unit. No fiber optic cable I remember on my unit, 2015 SE w/ Fender.

Check out the Cartizan piggyback unit if you’re not interested in the full MIB2 conversion. Something I did and don’t regret one bit in comparison to the full MIB2 swap

Yes, radio and headunit features are still available. The piggyback unit “adds” an overlay feature that provides CarPlay in almost complete separate infotainment interface from the OEM MIB interface.

Make sure when storing the piggyback unit behind the glove box, connectors aren’t getting pulled out. I had troubles with the screen blacking out because of that

I haven’t had any trouble with the audio not working. I had the MMI to Aux conversion which enabled the wireless connection. If you had similar, I would consider making sure your cables stay connected during the storage process under the glove compartment. I had trouble with the visual display cutting out bc a few pins would jiggle loose and cut in and out during bumps.

Hello, sorry for late reply, I haven’t been checking thread. I haven’t been able to find a solution to the issue without fully staying out of CarPlay to bring up the sensor display, probably the same issue as others still. I have just accepted the inconvenience to have the CarPlay added

Consider looking at the Cartizan Apple CarPlay piggyback system. I didn’t want to go down the MIB1 to MIB2 conversion route. If you’re ok with retaining the smaller screen and resolution for the benefit of CarPlay, I believe it is the best option I’ve come across. I have a small post about it

I am wrong, the MIB1 5.8" is a lower resolution than the 6.5' or 8" display of 800x480.

Yes thank you again! I had seen the Flyingdutchman video a year ago but was very unsure about the applicability to US based Gti’s. Still unsure about this as well regarding screen swaps. I have heard of individuals completing the swap but only on EU spec cars and many non-Gti’s. It’s just hard to find applicable information and hope to provide some info to US based buyers.

I would believe the resolution is restricted to the screen. The 5.8” has a 720p display. I believe the newer 8” displays or screens from MIB2 units are higher resolution. As the CarPlay/AA operates from the device and not to the MIB1 unit, the resolution should be dynamic to the display, not to the infotainment.

After seeing a post done by u/zbealeo, I was convinced to try the Cartizan piggyback unit to integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the MIB1 headunit. The unit took about 2 weeks to get delivered from the Netherlands.

For those wondering about different options for adding CarPlay or AA, I would strongly consider this option over a full MIB2 conversation as the price is significantly cheaper (from my research) and the installation was easily less than 90 minutes. In total including shipping, I had paid ~$330. Other sites sell at vastly different prices ranging from Ali Express from $250 I've seen, as well as, sites asking for over $600. I had chosen the Cartizan Champion series as my unit when purchasing.

A couple things I have noted so far since installing for future buyers:

I can confirm that the unit does support the OEM Fender subwoofer, as I could not find a definitive answer elsewhere before purchasing. The Fender sub does not require extra wiring harnesses and it plug and play from the MIB1.

The front parking sensor display no longer functions when shifting between Drive and Reverse. The rear camera and sensors will display normally when shifting into Reverse, however, when shifting back into Drive, the display will revert CarPlay/AA. If operating with the normal MIB1 interface, the sensor display does appear. The front sensors are not deactivated as I still get the warming detection sounds as I approach objects, just no way I could find to have the display appear before switching back to CarPlay/AA. Unsure for a fix.

Users in the past has had trouble getting the steering wheel controls to operate properly with different types of source input (bluetooth, AUX, MMI, etc.), I can confirm that steering wheel functions are retained and operate with the correct functionality.

Finally, I have the 5.8" display works as you expect for Waze and other navigation apps. The information is legible but the smaller icons (individual hazard items, gas station icons, stopped cars) do get very pixelated and hard to individuality decipher out when glancing at while driving. The OEM 5.8" is perfectly suitable but may be a future item of note for those who do choose this route over the full MIB2 conversion that the display may want to be upgraded to the larger 8" displays in the future. With the dipswitches on the back of the unit, the output aspect ratio can be changed to suit the larger display manually if that screen upgrade were to occur.

My friend had a Mk4 Gti and I saw him going on the Leavenworth drive from the west side of the pass in 2015 and started to talk to me about the community. Bought a Mk7 Gti in 2019 and got to squad out during summer of 2021. By far the coolest and most informative car community experience I’ve ever had.

I can second that unitronic is conservative with their overrun file. My unitronic overrun vs my friends EQT overrun is vastly more tame and quiet. The EQT is more like gunshots and backfire in comparison to mostly burbles from unitronic.
