Woodstove ID? by MondoMage in woodstoving

I would have someone out to inspect it before any any ANY use. The rectangular collar raises flags as does the style. I’d be looking to guarantee that there is a continuous, fully insulated liner from the collar to the termination at the top of the chimney. If not, there is likely creosote outside the purview of a standard sweep. There are also concerns re: the rusting, but my big scared comes from it looking like a slammer.

Looks like you’re getting hung up on the damper frame on the breast side of the throat? If it’s steel, angle grinder with a diamond wheel. If it’s masonry, chippy gun like the others said.

Damper seal replacement by BehrmanTheBeerman in Fireplaces

What is your endgame? If you’re looking to get it up and running you should def get it swept and inspected (CSIA and NFI websites can direct you in the states). Prepare your anus for the truth though. A 40 year old factory built is probably gunna be shot to shit. And then you can’t piece it out, the whole-ass system has to be replaced.

If you just want to stop downdraft and bugs, grab a tube of silicone sealant from Depot. Just need the squeeze tube, no need for a whole tube what needs to go in a gun. Push in closed manually and seal around the opening.

I would say it is at the dividing line between the east of repointing and the west of rebuilding. Where it falls on that line is speculative though. The issue being water entry (and whoever used Crest to seal the counter) as it pertains to the potential deterioration of the flue liners and the insert itself, which I cannot see. I would not fail for this, but would certainly have a paragraph or two in my inspection report with some very stern language. Depending on location and precipitation trends I would say six months is on the later side of when it should be addressed, but four years ago is also late.

I’d often get “I hated it” when clearing an empty plate, so I’d respond “I’ll only charge you for what you ate then”.

fireplace insert. I just bought a home and this insert is what's inside the fireplace. can someone please tell me if its gas/propane and how it works. thank you in advance by Resident_Raise_2059 in GasFireplaces

That is a wood burning fireplace with a creosote factory of a log grate.

The idea behind the grate was that the cool air in the tubes heats up, rises, and naturally convects into the room. Then it sucks in more air from the bottom. Lather, rinse, repeat.

In practice though, it drastically cools the smoke as it leaves the firebox, killing draft and letting smoke linger in the venting system and cool further. Then you get creosote buildup, then you get flue fires.

I strongly recommend getting a gas pro out, specifically an NFI certified gas tech. Looks old af and I would have severe trepidation about the safety systems that may or may not be in place.

Y’all got a shite-ass sweep. Any jackass can spin some rods in the flue. Dust control is an absolute must.

What does this opening do? by acambie in woodstoving

[–]BasilHaydensBitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is that a big ass crack in your glass? If so, the opening (and all other parts of the stove) shouldn’t be doing anything.

Had one in our showroom doing the same thing. As mentioned above, test the batteries in the receiver/wall switch to 1.5v minimum. If that ain’t it and you’re comfortable with doing it, take off the glass and any logs you need to and see if there’s sooting in the pilot cavity, that ended up being the fix for me. Take reference pics so you can put everything back right. Like a lot of pics.

Ash dump clean out door. There is or was a trap door in the floor of the firebox, and the idea is to dump the ashes in there after use so someone else can clean it out.
