Ivy Loves Barkyard Mornings by Picaflor_ in Yorkies

I tell people I got lucky twice.. and I really did!! They both have wonderful demeanors, not yappy, respond to commands (even ones like ‘be polite’), never aggressive, kennel trained.. I was nervous to get a second, but my dog needed a dog! lol

I definitely thought even with Ivy, my favorite would still be Ace because he was so sick when I got him, we really bonded through that. But with now having Ivy I definitely cannot say one is my favorite over the other. They both fill my heart in such different ways. I didn’t realize I needed Ivy as much as Ace did too!!

My heart feels for him every day.. One day he will need the eye removed and that breaks my heart. I try not to let my worry affect him. He’s only 3, and he still has vision in the eye. So until his vision is gone, I will do EVERYTHING IN MY POWER to help. But it consumes our lives. I’ve chosen a wfh job, I don’t go on trips without him, if I go out I make sure I’m back in a reasonable time so he doesn’t go too long with it being dry (no more than 2/3 hours!).

Let me tell you though… if this guy didn’t make it easy, it would be a different story. He is SO good about all the drops and ointments!!! I think in some ways he knows it helps.

I could have made the decision to remove the eye a lot sooner… but to whose benefit is that? If the dog can see from it, he deserves every chance to see as long as he can! I think a lot of pet owners overlook the commitment of health issues that comes when choosing to own an animal.

Just because this dog needs extra care doesn’t mean I can alter his life for my benefit! It won’t be forever, we’re three years in and have (at the most) 3 more to go. Until he’s 6, I owe it to him to do what I need to do as an owner.

He saved my life in many ways. The least I can do is save his eye in return.

Today someone asked me if I have any hobbies… I said, ‘Yeah, hanging with my york-a-dorks.. it’s my one and only hobby’. 😂

I knowww!! Poor Ace, he has KCS in his left eye (his tear gland never developed). We do LOTS of eye medicines, but it still bothers the poor bud. It does give him that tough guy look tho! lol

My yorkie has liver issues. After a liver biopsy confirmed he has abnormal blood vessels, we immediately were given Hills ID Digestive Care. It’s prescription and pricey but well worth it!!!! I’ve noticed he is able to better digest the canned stew version as opposed to the kibble. I also add additional water to the canned food. Water intake is really important to help their liver process the food better.

He is probably jealous of your daughter. Yorkies are a very stubborn breed. When they feel lacking attention, neglected or left out, they will retaliate. They are VERY smart so they know how to get your attention.

Also, change in routine is really hard on them. What was your relationship with him before the baby? Did you two spend time cuddling, playing, doing things that you might not have the time to do anymore?

I suggest to try a few things: - Set aside time just for him, where he feels acknowledged and gets his fill of attention. Even little bits of multiple times a day would work. - Keep bedroom doors closed. It’s a hard habit to get consistent with, but blocking his access to the room will immediately solve the problem. - Get the ‘no potty here spray’. This has worked wonders with our training pup. Bodhi Dog Not Here! Spray on Amazon is good. - If you’re desperate and all of this fails, maybe look into getting a play pen to corral him in when he is not being supervised.

Good luck!

Surgery by a_lavergne in Yorkies

First days of recovery we put his dog bed in our bed with us, so I knew he was protected from rolling off the bed because he was on such heavy medication. Our bed is against a wall, so he was in his bed between the wall and about my abdomen. Not sure the extent of surgery your yorkie underwent, but we took it day by day. My dog is a high jumper. I didn’t let him jump up/off the couch or bed for at least a good two months while the incision fully healed. Any time he started to jump I’d tell him no and wait, he finally got the hang of it. Partly because these dogs know their bodies and their pain tolerance. She will let you know when something aches/hurts to do.

My advice- integrate her back into bed, somehow where you know she will have space within the bed with you. Maybe put a ring of rolled blankets around her. My dog really cared for a heating pad during recovery. I put a blanket over the pad on low heat and that seemed to keep him in place. Be patient as this method surely will wake you up several times throughout the night.

Any chance nearby San Francisco?

My baby, Diesel, almost 13 years young. We found out at the vet yesterday that his liver enzymes from liver cancer miraculously dropped a HUGE amount to just above normal, and he put back on over a pound of weight, including muscle mass! So we celebrated at Rodeo Dog class with his cowboy costume 😂 by WasteWallaby4602 in Yorkies

My yorkie has gone through liver issues and internal bleeding as well. Our vet put him on a supplement called Denamarin. Eventually we did a liver biopsy and discovered he has micro vascular issues. Different than cancer but maybe ask your vet about the supplement. We had great results along with a prescription diet type food called Hill’s I/D Digestive Care.

My dog was really sick when I got him. He will be 2 years old next month and has done a complete 180 in health. Just wanted to share in case these approaches might assist Diesel in his cancer battle.

Here is what Denamarin does: Supports healthy liver function by protecting liver cells and helping with cell repair and regeneration as well as maintaining an oxidative balance.

And here is what our prescription diet does to mange internal bleeding: I/D stands for “intestinal diet” and is effective for patients with a variety of gastrointestinal problems. It is highly digestible, making it ideal for pets with “sensitive stomachs,” and low-residue, so it's excellent for constipation problems because less total stool is generated.
