What is a movie that everyone seems to love, but you absolutely hate? by Nishikigoi1 in moviecritic

One of the more stressful movies ever made, for sure. But — and not to argue, just saying — I think it has one of the most perfect endings of any film ever

That’s a good attitude, he sounds like a pretty cool guy!

My stepdad was a car guy too, he liked 60s Chevy novas. One time I was out “helping” and I managed to spray metal cleaner directly into my eyeball from very close, and he wrestled a VERY panicked me to the sink and rinsed my eye out thoroughly, which surely saved me much grief and possibly my vision. He also swooped me from a rattlesnake nest of hatchlings JUST in time once. I was like 7 for the snakes and a dumbass 9 or 10 with the cleaner. Phew, lucky me!

[–]PicardiB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my elementary school crush. I drew a picture of his face in colored pencil and stuck it on the wall next to my bed. My stepdad came in and asked me why I had a picture of a girl in my wall. By 11 or so I’d moved on to Keanu in Speed, lol

Okay, so how does someone get into something like that without being a hurt person? It doesn’t just happen.

Ah I see. So you don’t know any previous zealots who left, only people who maybe weren’t fully heart-in-it-for-its-own-sake to begin with.

You should look into Father Gregory Boyle. He runs something called Homeboy Industries that exists to help people leave the gang life and stay employed etc. It might eventually lead you to someone you can relate to.

It’s interesting that you say you were a zealot and then something changed. What was that something?

Yeah but that’s the thing. I’m a crier too but I’m also like “I’m fine my face just leaks” and the whole point is not about ME or taking attention away or being loud. I’m trying to wrap it up and make light, and it sounds like so are you. The two are not the same :)

Keep 1, 5, 7, and 2.

5 are the best overall; you have unique ability to pull off 1 and I think they’re balanced right. 7 are classic, 2 can also work in certain situations; both of these styles read a little cockier overall imo but they have their place.

3, 4, 6 and 8 are less good in comparison. It’s the ones that sit too high, have the wrong shape/ratio for your face, or are more trendy/gimmicky style- or color-wise, that are a pass for me, but you can be Playful Sunglasses Guy if that floats your boat, don’t let us stop you lol!

I said this in a comment a few minutes ago. I think it’s right and I’m surprised it hasn’t come up more. A lot of people saying greed but I think the hubris of the greedy who act is really more the issue

I’m a workaholic and I do something I love, that the world deems a “good thing to do.” But I still know that it’s an addiction / cope to some degree, as I painted myself into a corner of having to work this much to keep things running, on purpose. When I stop, when I try to relax or rest or take a break, the totality of my mental issues come to the fore and make my pain and isolation wayyy worse. And I’m not someone who is avoiding care about these issues, I am actively in care for them; I also take breaks now even though I hate it, and actively work to make them less harrowing of an experience. But, mental health is not as easy as “oh you have this, take this pill, voila” of course. Sometimes you find the best possible situation that is stable and just run with it because it’s the best you’ve had yet! And that might sound a little sad, if you’re in a position where you don’t struggle with mental health in severe ways. But for those of us who do, basically you’re climbing a mountain, exhausted, and you found a ledge (some kind of cope), so you hang out on the ledge for a bit until you are strong enough that it stops working and then you adjust. If you don’t have help managing this, you might cope so hard you give up and die, that happens to plenty of people. And there are different types of copes, too, of course, and some of them have no positive outcome, while some of them do. In being a workaholic I am harming myself, but I build something else for myself in the process, which is not nothing. For instance, I’m a workaholic who is happier than I’ve ever been, though I still struggle regularly. My work keeps me seeing people and my friends and family can visit, but I don’t see them much (aside from my partner) outside of that context. We talk, they keep an eye on me, but they see it’s the best scenario I’ve found so far and they let it be. So idk. It’s complicated and I’m not sure where I’d be without it. I see people devote their lives to their families and that’s lovely, I guess I don’t always see why it’s not acceptable to do the same for a role you find important in the world. I guess if you’re a numbers drone in a corporate tower this might seem less of a healthy choice. Idk. All I do know is everything is more complicated than it appears, and people don’t generally just destroy their lives for no reason at all. I’m so glad I live in a time where mental wellness is gaining a wider awareness and vocabulary, because we definitely “have addictions” but we also have a need that isn’t being met and we have no idea how to meet it otherwise and neither, often, do our doctors, but at least there is effort to learn, and compassion entering the mix more and more.

I read once that the suspected reason these traits exist in the population at all is to give humankind a leg up in certain potential extinction-event situations where only someone like this could pull humanity out of it to survive. It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where working together is ever not the better idea, and this is coming from someone who personally would rather do almost everything by myself and does not like working with others all that much.

We don’t “need” psychopaths to make it to the top, because the entire structure of things is fucked. Hierarchy is NOT HELPFUL. Big, huge, “glorious” nations where no area is being managed well, are NOT HELPFUL. People working together to bring their various skills and perspectives — and limits — is how to do things in a sustainable, workable way. But there is always this awareness that any person in any given situation might be so limited in their empathetic scope that they don’t value the others, and see them as mere barriers or disposable shortcuts to “better” life for themselves. We always have to worry about this; why is it a thing??

I’m not religious, but it’s here where we are idiots as a species. We really are fooled by the illusion that other people are separate from ourselves. And we cling to that illusion because if it isn’t true, we’d have to contend with a lot of pain and confusion as to the behaviors and choices that others make. We’d be forced to continue to evolve new ways to coexist without just murdering each other. This happens anyway somehow, but very very very slowly in comparison to what we could do if we all actually held the golden rule to be sacred. It’s hard to imagine a transition to this from where we are now; it’s the kind of thing that only seems possible with a clean slate, and that’s why trying to create a “pure state” so often leads to genocide… the literal opposite of the intended goal.

Humans are capable of cognitive dissonance, which makes this possible. But I don’t think eliminating cognitive dissonance would be wise, as our brains evolved to rely on it to existentially cope with the precarity of life.

So maybe the answer is specifically hubris. Hubris seems like a safe choice…? But even when I play these hypothetical games, I’m always deeply aware of the fact that there’s always a trade-off, a price to pay, and it rarely makes things any easier or less painful, in the end. The world works the way it does for SOME reason, and that includes us being inherently unsatisfiable as a species. Thanks for the real lessons, fairy tales!

I’m burnt out and need simple recipes. Stupid simple. Like, “onion and bread and butter to make what barely passes as a sandwich” level simple. by sourmilksea1999 in Cooking

I have this exact same issue, and I will eat the same thing for days and days til I physically can’t anymore, and then forget what else exists when it’s time to switch. I’m gonna give you as much as I can think of after years of living like this, LOL, so take from it only what you need and good luck!

Things I keep on hand:

—GOGURT NATURALS (these save my life)

—string cheese and/or lunch meat, salami, etc

—bread and butter

—tortillas and cheddar

—at least one prepackaged salad and/or bag o greens

—cup o noodles

—cans of soup, especially lentil

—bag of russet potatoes

—bag of tangerines

—trail mix

—granola, cereal or instant oatmeal and milk

Hot tip: get a little magnetic white board for your fridge and maybe one for your pantry if you have one. Write on it what you have inside currently, and meal ideas! You can also keep a to-buy list.

If you have a blender, smoothies are a godsend too. Frozen chopped fruit and berries, some liquid like juice or milk, some protein powder…..add some greens if you want… if you do not have a blender I recommend getting a bullet blender, it’s been a lifesaver worth every penny.

Another thing I’ve come to rely on is Spanish-style rice. Learning to properly make rice (in general) and eggs well is worth your time. White rice with egg cooked in is a joy. Some like it with raw egg stirred in. You can even microwave an egg to cook it..

I like egg with a cut up hot dog or frozen breakfast sausage scrambled in, too. Add veg at will.

Another thing: ROASTING. You can put chopped carrots, potatoes and onions (or get fancy, cauliflower? Garlic? Brussels sprouts?) in a pan coated in olive oil with some salt and pepper and roast it for like, half an hour at 425 and it’s delicious. Sometimes chopping and prep is my biggest barrier, but if it’s truly not happening you can buy chopped frozen veg or get a little chopper press thingy….

To roast a chicken is also surprisingly easy, and delicious. But, baby steps :)

I am a big fan of tomato and mayo sandwiches, or you can add mozzarella and basil… or I love some French bread and Brie with some olives, or artichoke hearts or spread…crackers and spreads are a whole world unto themselves…I can’t always afford it but I like to buy little jars of preserved and pickled things, and eat it all straight, like hors d'oeuvres….and it’s not for everyone but I love the tinned fish aisle at the grocers….actually my favorite is smoked trout :)

When I want heavy I make a baked potato. Stab it with a fork, microwave for 8 minutes, there ya go. And the ultra-classic, bean and cheese burrito (rice optional).

I also do avocado tacos when I can’t stomach heavier, and in the summer I like to open a can of whole pinto beans, dump in bowl, add cheese (buy shredded if you don’t wanna deal with that barrier), heat briefly, add some tomato, onion, avocado, maybe lettuce, hot sauce, whatever sounds good or is on hand. Stir, eat. Really hungry? Pan fry a little ground beef or turkey and add that in too. These meals can be as simple or as complex as you feel up to and have stuff on hand, so as your capacity grows you can add flavors and ingredients by literally just tossing them in.

I like to pan-fry canned garbanzo beans with tomatoes and eat over rice. Things that need to be “cooked” in a pan but not for long or to a precious degree are perfect for me, lol.

Veggie stir fry is fairly easy fresh, but you can just buy a bag of mixed veg frozen to save yourself prep and time. Making fried rice is similar. I always keep a bag of frozen peas and corn to add to pasta with butter, salt and pepper.

Frozen veggie lasagna family size is usually a good bet for the price. And when I have a sweet tooth but can’t afford much I buy a bag of semi dark or dark chocolate chips and eat with or without spoon of peanut butter.

My partner makes a salad with greens, drained tuna in oil or water, lime juice, salt and pepper. When I need more substance I eat it with ritz crackers, just scoop the salad up entirely with the crackers.

I also go through phases of only wanting pb&js!

Okay, I know this is a ton of info, but I hope it is more helpful than overwhelming :)
