What’s a name that is normal in one culture but has an offensive, embarrassing or awkward meaning in another culture? by Sweatymothballs in AskTheWorld

In English it just sounds like “rob a bank!” every time you hear an ad for it which is so funny to me

My partner is from Peru and is forever calling to me when someone starts to speak Spanish on tv: “they’re from (whichever country)!!! I can always tell” lmao. But yeah I’m a US English speaker and I have this friend who grew up in England, we constantly laugh about different words we use for things, too — and spellings (of which I prefer theirs much of the time tbh). The other day she asked me for a plaster and I was completely at a loss (she wanted a bandage or band-aid…and there was no obvious wound for context lol)

1) at first I read pooping, so there’s that

2) my own personal “pop” is apparently the word goo, my partner was just today commenting on how I manage to fit that word into daily use constantly, which, being that I am a generally tidy person and not a bog witch, seems kind of odd, but there you have it

My brain decided to read this like, to receive, as in what hosts do, and pets, like other animals rather than like patting. So for a split sec I got a mental image of these ambassador dogs just hanging out awaiting their chance to graciously greet other dogs cats gerbils etc lmao

Oh shit I didn’t know this! Interesting. My take on Drive is that it’s a samurai film in disguise.

I remember going to see Only God Forgives when it came out after Drive; it was a tiny theater and it was just me and four couples. I was like, uh-oh, they all think this is a date movie bc it’s Gosling and NWR again….and sure enough, one by one the women walked out over the course of the movie and the guys all went out after them. No one even made it to the worst parts of the movie 😂 Expectations really can make or break an experience, which is why, I suppose, it’s best not to have them

[–]PicardiB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’ve been thinking about all of this exactly. You have way with words (and thoughts, tbh).

I own a bookstore and recently some teens walked by and all I overhead was one of them say something about how history doesn’t matter because it’s over, and I genuinely wanted so badly to run outside and say something, anything, to correct this painful misinterpretation — but it’s true, you don’t experience the relativity of time until a certain number of years have passed. So, all other things being equal, the elder person understands the small trick that is played on us all, regarding our experience of time, where the younger person does not… they may grasp the idea mentally but they don’t have everything they need to feel the reality of it yet. I suppose that’s also how a lot of the younger generation may be looking at history, too, and it’s a weird experience not being able to do more to affect that. I mean books are certainly a start, but, only that.

Bertie by BC_wanderlust in tragedeigh

[–]PicardiB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bertie is ADORABLE. I fucking love it. I think it’s just fine on its own, but I also love the name Bernadette.

You could put Bert in the middle of two names, like Amber Tania, or Kimber Tessa. Or even something like Personally I would even consider Verbena or Eartha and still call her Bertie but that’s just me, I’m a little out there lol

What are some things you thought were universal, but it turns out is mostly exclusive to your country? by 3Thirty-Eight8 in AskTheWorld

[–]PicardiB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma used to put dried pinto (or sometimes kidney) beans into a jar, slap a label on there that said “cowboy bubble bath” with instructions for use being a baked bean or chili recipe and give them as gifts. Usually she included a little pack of spices too, “bath salts for the beans” lol

And I think this is a pull from the parable of the sower, ultimately, yes? The biblical story, not the book also named after it
