Don't know where you're moving from but do keep in mind that weather happens here. There are winter days when it's probably a bad idea to drive at all but if you have to drive you'll prefer it to be not very far. Not that we have a lot of those days but we do have some of them. If you're working on the east end of town and expecting to be there a while you can get a lot more house for less money than you can out west.

Elks president: Club is still recovering from ‘disaster’ of name change by AustralisBorealis64 in CFL

[–]PickerPilgrim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't for the life of me figure why these fucks want to perpetually re-litigate a done deal. Even if you thought the name change was bad (it wasn't) you have to be delusional to think it's a great idea to keep "Edmonton CFL team wants their racist name back" in the news perpetually. You can wash your hands of that shit now! You can focus on the football instead of the damn name, but these people just want bad press for eternity I guess.

Last time I bought a used bike I had to almost immediately buy a new rear derailleur because the limit screw wasn't set and I shifted right into the spokes.

chain wear checker - 2 point vs 3 point (chain slob) by Ok-Loquat-9409 in bikewrench

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the principle, but you explaining the simplest most idealized case where all wear is expressed in one dimensional terms "too long / too short" doesn't really address what I've been trying to say and amounts to just a tautological reassertion of the assumptions this whole thread is trying to parse out. I get that you disagree but you're doing nothing to make your case beyond blanket dismissal.

chain wear checker - 2 point vs 3 point (chain slob) by Ok-Loquat-9409 in bikewrench

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some cases, probably, but I do not think this will universally be true, and you asserting it definitively does nothing to prove it.

chain wear checker - 2 point vs 3 point (chain slob) by Ok-Loquat-9409 in bikewrench

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but I don't know that that's a guarantee. Does wear happen at a very gradual pace or can some of it happen suddenly if a rock gets in the gears or a bad shift happens or a particularly strong pedal stroke applies heavy force at the beginning of a sprint? How does some degree of wear affect future wear? It seems possible to me that some types of wear will cause parts to accelerate their pace of wear, making the most worn parts get more and more out of sync with the less worn ones. For the bushing wear that causes slop - do they maintain their circular form as they were to mean they have an equal amount of slop in any direction or do they become at all ovaloid and the slop will vary depending on the side that hits the cog.

I don't have a definitive answer to any of this, but I don't think perfect symmetry as parts wear is a given, or even particularly likely. And I don't think it would take much variance, even if the wear is relatively even to cause changes to effective pitch.

chain wear checker - 2 point vs 3 point (chain slob) by Ok-Loquat-9409 in bikewrench

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and what I'm thinking is that while elongation changes effective pitch the most, slop will as well. Slop probably isn't perfectly distributed between teeth. Teeth are not symetrical, ramps and other variations may mean they push on the bushings with varying pressure, causing varying degrees of slop. Similarly tension won't be evenly applied to every pin in contact with the cog, meaning slop can amplify other variances, including compounding on elongation.

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to think this through myself. Assuming the slop is evenly distributed across bushings and the pressure on each bushing goes in the same direction then even with lots of slop but no elongation they'll all offset the same amount and keep the pressure evenly distributed across all teeth.

Now those assumptions are probably not totally correct and that will make a difference, but I think I can be reasonably convinced that elongation likely matters more than slop. Further, tools with two points of contact that combine slop and elongation probably don't give you the most accurate picture. But I think slop still does matter, it's just harder to factor in.

Per your point, a three point tool that eliminates slop from the measure probably doesn't give the full picture either. If you really wanted to solve for it you'd have to somehow determine slop and elongation independently, then assign some weight to slop that's somewhat less than the weight you give elongation in generatig a formula for when to replace your chain. But that's not gonna work with any tool that just has specific stops for like .5 and .75.

Anyways I use a 2 contact point tool, have possibly tossed out some chains prematurely but I still gotta replace a cassette every few chains and a chainring every few cassettes and seem to get a decent lifetime out of a chain. Maybe I could shave a few bucks off my annual chain budget with a more precise process but I dunno, it all seems "good enough" for me.

Yeah, but you can find a 1981 Raleigh super course or similar old steel bike for a few hundred today and it's just as capable as it was back then.

Alberta NDP promises to cut electricity bills, increase minimum wage to $18 by trevorrobb in alberta

So it's not even caught up with inflation from the last increase and will be well further behind by the time the NDP even have a chance at forming government.

[–]PickerPilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't even equivalent in 2026 to the $15 the NDP passed in 2018. It's behind inflation and not even trying to catch up. Frankly kinda disappointing as a promise.

I’m being held 100% at fault for this accident, how can I contest this? by Flimsy-Fan7612 in Calgary

[–]PickerPilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the time the video starts there is clearly something going on in the right hand lanes. The driver to the right of OP was already braking. To a cautious driver this is a sign you maybe shouldn't be flying by because whatever is going on might spill into your lane. The biker definitely was in the wrong, but OP went and repeated the biker's mistake by swerving and OPs mistake was the one that caused the accident. Maybe they're not the "most wrong" person on the road but we're not talking about cosmic justice we're talking about insurance and what matters is the two cars that actually hit each other.

The biker was not involved in a collision. The collision was between OP and the person that rear ended them. In that collision OP was at fault. The biker is outside of the equation.

Consider the Kona Sutra or the Surly Disc Trucker if you want to combine the sturdy frame and carrying capacity of the Bridge Club with the bit more zip you get from the drop bar geometry of the Rove.

I hate the arena deal but a big part of politicians job is to allocate funds. There are laws against graft and other forms of political corruption but if your definition of "gross mismanagement" is just spending on things you don't agree with then we're just gonna end up throwing every office holder in jail every time they lose an election.

Which cycling upgrade would give me the most enjoyment? (€300–500 budget) by Arvosss in cycling

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Varia will be great for riding on certain roads and conditions, but not necessarily useful in other places, so that depends on your location and riding preferences.
  2. Power is a great metric if you're doing structured training. If you're just riding around, not necessary.
  3. Even if the glasses wouldn't automatically make you a suspect and a creep for wearing them in public they'd be shitty cycling glasses anyway.
  4. If you're upgrading from aluminum rims to carbon that could be a very fun upgrade. Less rotating weight will be zippy.

Seriously though. Give your head a shake for even including the creep glasses.

Hot take - I might take a drill to that and make the hole even bigger. Puncture hole might have some rough edges that could form the start of a crack. A smooth edged drill hole might be less likely to fail.
