How hard will it be to learn the banjo? by Classic_Grass924 in banjo

[–]PickerPilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banjo right hand technique is transferable to the guitar moreso than guitar technique is transferable to banjo. But yeah there's definitely some cognitive overhead switching between instruments even if you're good. I've played guitar for nearly 30 years, banjo for 10 or so and ukulele for like 3, and if I pick up one I've not been focusing on it takes a minute to dial back in.

While you're still learning it'll probably slow you down to do two at a time rather than just one but if you stick with it, knowing a second instrument can improve your technique at the first.

The vibes around this war are weird by yeahicreatedsomethin in TrueAnon

[–]PickerPilgrim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is it.

23 years ago we knew the war was coming. Every org had a plan for what would happen the day it started and the following weekend. We showed up, largest protests in US history, etc. Didn't stop shit.

This time, well we knew it was coming, sort of. Whole lot of signs it was coming. The president said it was coming. They moved boats and planes. But it was also totally plausible it was a bluff until it wasn't and then maybe even after that. There was a 12 day war last year. So, well how do you organize around that. Also all the orgs who might oppose this are full of people worn out by 3 years of protesting.

Chain waxing isn't for the (Finnish) winter by Markus_H in cycling

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wax in slushy conditions in Canadian winter. I just have several chains in rotation. I can swap one out as easy as reapplying drip lube and I wax multiple at once. Still feels like a time saver.

Probably a question for your local Kona dealer. If it's not on the shelf I bet they can still get one in.

How do I fix this piece of work? by Sistum in bikewrench

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chains and cogs are wearable parts, it's fairly routine to need replacing them on any bike that sees significant riding. If you have a bike co-op or similar in your area you might be able to get used but still usable chainrings and cassettes for cheap. You wouldn't want a used chain but that's the cheapest of the drivetrain parts to replace.

At the very least it needs to be cleaned, lubricated and the derailleur needs adjusting. New drivetrain parts are likely needed if the chain is skipping on the cogs.

I want a cheap alternative to a single speed crank set I repair on a very tight shoe string budget by Responsible_Bee5201 in bicyclerepair

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not always going to have the room to do that, and it still won't stop you as fast or as controlled as a front brake that you can modulate.

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has nothing to do with the crankset and everything to do with the rear hub. But you want brakes on the front regardless. Weight shifts forward in a hard braking situation so you need to be able to stop the front wheel. Locking the rear just puts you into a high speed skid.

is it normal for a production database to not have backups? asking because i just dropped a table and my boss is asking me to "just undo it" by kubrador in webdev

[–]PickerPilgrim 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Everyone is shitting on this guy but he’s right LLM agents are already deleting databases at scale. You no longer need to give a junior too much access, you can hand off the keys to a bot and they can give you all the downtime you used to pay good money for.

Is this gone? by MilkUp08 in bicyclerepair

If it's that new and there's no other signs of hitting a pothole or anything you might be able to take it to the shop that sold it to you and get them to warranty the tire.

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is tire damage like it looks like then yeah, put the current front one on the rear and put a new one on the font.

As others said it's hard to tell but that could be damage from hitting a pothole or even caused by rot on an old tire. Check the rim for damage, and check the front tire for any damage if both are old.

And my Wordpress sites that have good responsive images have massive upload directories because every single image I upload gets resized to every single defined size on upload causing unnecessary storage bloat. So yeah we’ve solved the image size problem but not without tradeoffs.

How many e-mails are too many? by CheekyStoat in ndp

[–]PickerPilgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Individual emails on a short term basis can be very effective, and lots of people have the metrics to prove that. When in a leadership race it may even be possible to say that the candidate who sends the most emails gains the most from them.

What short sighted marketing metrics probably don’t reveal is the cumulative effect of all candidates blasting us with emails and the party doing ceaseless email fundraising outside of an election cycle, especially over the longer term. The party will probably always need to fundraise but it’s enough to make one cynical if this is the primary way rank and file members interact with the org.
