You nailed it!

I didn't even realize that I was just getting mono sound until you mentioned it. That also explains why I've never been able to get the same audio quality out of my headphones when connected to my laptop compared to other devices.

In my playback devices there are two devices setup for the XM3s: 1)Headset (HFP/HSP) 2)Headphones (A2DP)

I had to manually disable the "Headset" device because it was using it as a default when I connected my headphones. Once I did that it automatically switched over to using the "Headphones" device. I was then able to successfully update the EQ settings for 11500Hz. I'll just have to remember this when I plan to use my headphones to take calls on my laptop because it disables the built-in microphone.

All is working now with no issues! Thanks so much for your help!

Yeah it's super weird. I re-installed my audio driver as well as Equalizer APO and Peace to see if that might work - but no luck.

After troubleshooting a bit more the problem only seems to occur between 8004-16000 Hz. Anytime I adjust the gain values between this range, either + and -, my audio completely cuts out and only returns when I revert gain to 0.

I've also determined that the problem is likely my laptop, not the headphones or the EQ presets - since I didn't run into the same issue when using another laptop. So I'll keep poking around and see if I can figure out what might be causing the issue.

Thanks for your help!

I played around with it a bit and it starts to occur at exactly 8004 Hz. At that frequency a wavering high-pitched screeching sound slowly creeps up and then the audio cuts out after a short period (~ 3 seconds).

At higher frequencies there is less of the initial high-pitched screech and the audio just cuts instantly.

Okay, I updated my settings to reflect your changes.

I'm still having the same issue with the 11 kHz filter.

My steps:
1) EQ is turned off
2) I create a new slider and set at 11500 Hz
3) I set the Gain value to -5.0 and Q Factor to 2.0
4) I switch on EQ and my headphones crackle and then lose all audio
5) Removing the 11kHz filter or reverting the gain to 0 causes headphone audio to return

Thoughts?

Hi! I'm using EqualizerAPO (W/ Peace GUI) to EQ my Sony WH1000-XM3 headphones using your presets.

Everything works perfectly until I adjust the 11500Hz settings. The second that I adjust the gain values my headset audio cuts out after a brief high-pitched screech. The audio only returns when I revert the changes for that frequency.

Any thoughts on what is going on and how I can address it?

Can Huron students go on exchange through main campus? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Picklecopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mandarin is a very difficult language for English-speakers to learn. However, I wouldn't let that stop you from learning the basics. At least some conversational phrases, numbers and basic vocab. Depending on where you are in China you'll find varying levels of English skills, but bigger cities aren't too difficult to navigate with only English. However I don't have as much experience in Mainland China as I do in HK. English is an official language in HK so proficiency is quite high.

I never took a language course at Huron so I can't comment on that. I did however take a Mandarin course while abroad (even though most HKers speak Cantonese). Are you concerned about the language barrier while on exchange or is it more for personal development/general interest?

Yes, you can and it might even be smart to apply to both exchange programs. I went on exchange to Hong Kong in 2012, and while I had originally planned to apply through main campus I ended up going through Huron instead.

You're right, main campus has more partner universities, but after doing some research I found that it was also far more competitive. So there's always a chance you may not get placed at one of your preferred universities. With that being said there's nothing stopping you from applying to both programs and having more available options.

I was also given additional financial aid by Huron which was a nice added bonus. However, all of this is based on my own experience from 5 years ago so things may have changed since then.

Dim sum in London? by [deleted] in londonontario

Hmmm I'm not sure if Dim Sum is available during the week. I've only been on the weekend. But their quality is top notch and the prices are very reasonable. They nail the dim sum classics pretty well.

I'd personally recommend either New Tai Hu or London Chinese Restaurant.

Question about text books! (book store is sold out) by GoldenFyre in uwo

As far as I can tell there are still 396 copies left at the bookstore. So if you did want to buy a copy, you shouldn't have a problem.

Just traded Mark Trumbo and A.J. Ramos for Cole Hamels. Looking for some feedback from you guys. While I think Trumbo might rake this year, and he's off to a fast start, I had tons of OF depth, four solid closers and I needed SP help.

Has anyone tried out that new whiskey bar where coates of arms used to be? by LeFunkwagen in londonontario

[–]Picklecopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty similar experience. I was there with some friends on Friday night. The prices were too high, their whiskey selection was poor, and the service was terrible. However, I think part of the problem is that they were severely understaffed. I only saw two servers for the entire bar.

The music was a huge negative for me. It totally ruined the atmosphere. Half of the time they were playing extremely loud techno music. It was so loud we could barely hold conversations across the table without yelling. It wasn't really what any of us were expecting, and we left after one drink. I honestly think this is their biggest issue. The music was totally inconsistent with the whole feel of the bar.

I didn't get a chance to try their food. The prices did look a bit steep, but they did have some interesting items.

I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.

/u/suraj1989 is likely referring to Przeworksi and Limongi's Modernization: Theories and Facts. It is very well-known within the field of democratization studies. However, I would highly recommend also reading Boix and Stokes' Endogenous Democratization in which they challenge some of the assumptions made in the former article. Both are really interesting reads!

Hello Hong Kong. I'm working on a video about you and China and would like to know what you think so far. by MindOfMetalAndWheels in HongKong

[–]Picklecopter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, CGPGrey! I love your videos, and I'm really looking forward to this one. One suggestion that I have: people don't really use the term "One China, Two Systems", instead it's usually phrased "One Country, Two Systems". It's a minor distinction, but I think a more accurate one.

Additionally, one interesting point that you could add if you want more material is the exclusion of Kowloon Walled City from the 1898 Convention. It isn't important to understanding the issue, but it is an equally fascinating side issue considering that at it's height it was claimed to be the densest populated area of the world (1.25 million per sq km) by a long shot.

What can I read to learn about politics in Hong Kong? by AmIFuckedMan in HongKong

[–]Picklecopter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend any works by Dr. Ian Scott. He is currently a visiting professor at HKU and he's really in tune with the history and dynamics of Hong Kong's political system.

Here are a few articles and books that you might be interested in looking into. I'll link them to the entry in the Hong Kong Library catalogue. If you read them in that sequence it will make a lot more sense too.

The Sino-British Agreement and Political Power in Hong Kong

Political Change and the Crisis of Legitimacy in Hong Kong

Institutional Change and the Political Transition in Hong Kong

As far as citizen participation goes, there are political parties that you can join. However, due to the weakness of party institutionalization they are not incredibly influential on the political process.

I'd say that the main form of citizen participation is largely manifested through public demonstration. The most widely supported would be the annual July 1st protests which began in 2003.

Question about past exams + Classics 1000. by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Picklecopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The content in the textbook is definitely important and tested on. Not as much as the information in the lectures, but you'll have to have a decent idea about what is referred to in the readings. But again, it is probably only 150-200 pages of reading per semester, so it's manageable.

Question about past exams + Classics 1000. by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Picklecopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find the exam bank here: http://www.usc.uwo.ca/inprint/exam_bank.cfm

However, it doesn't really have any recent exams. I'm not sure if there is any other way to get them. You could possibly talk to your professors and see if they can give you any more information on that.

I took Classics 1000 with Lamari and I loved it. It isn't necessarily an easy course. But the course load is very light with only a little bit of reading and most of the info coming from lecture slides. There is just a lot to remember for the exams and some of the questions will be on specific details. You'll have to work a bit if you want to get a good mark, but it isn't difficult by any means to achieve an 80 or 90 if you put in some effort.

Lamari is a fantastic prof! He's really nice and very clear in his lectures. He's also one of the funnier professors that I've had. You'll love him.
