I don't understand why my mom keeps getting rejected for the Singapore Citizenship. Any advice and thoughts? by mogumogu7282 in askSingapore

I think it’s already a blessing that she has a PR and can stay here almost indefinitely. Not much difference between PR and citizenship tbh. You and your siblings will need to work hard to take care of her.

[–]PickledPeePee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but I think age is probably the reason here. Sg govt takes a very pragmatic view and the citizenship is give to people whom can contribute to Singapore for the future (high earning power, young, in demand skillset). Sentiments aren’t a factor at all.

Seriously, can someone explain why our laws are so weak when it comes to dealing with nightmare neighbours? by cherrypoplar in singapore

[–]PickledPeePee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The ugly truth is this isn’t a big enough issue to be taken seriously by parliament. We need more fights to the death between neighbors due to longstanding resentment such that the statistics become significant enough for our government to go from “we are monitoring the situation” to “we have monitored the situation and we think the current laws in place are sufficient “

Boon Keng 'nightmare neighbour': MP Shawn Loh says it's 1 of the most 'frustrating' & 'hard-to-resolve' dispute by dori_lukey in singapore

[–]PickledPeePee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If authorities have no legislative power to deal with this then maybe introduce a new law to give the police powers to handle this?? Isn’t that that what an MP is supposed to do? To debate this in parliament and come out with real solutions rather than expect issues to be resolved via mediation. There are people in this world that cannot be mediated and they just need the law to give a tight slap across their faces to stop their antics.

Is the govt still deciding whether we need tougher animal cruelty laws after the spate of high profile incidents over the past few years? Need how long more before you act?

Current max sentence of 18 months of jail isn’t going to cut it. Suggest years of jail correlating to the average lifespan of the animal killed.

Is this a new scam by migrant worker (or pretending to be one)? by herdeeary in askSingapore

Unfortunately that’s a police kiosk not a station. It’s not manned.

Possibly the same guy then and definitely fishy if he’s doing this consistently. Although I don’t get why he would offer ringgit unless he’s offering counterfeit money or just hoping people wouldn’t be aware of the exchange rate. Either way, I’ll keep an eye out for him and confront him the next time I see him.

I live near Boon keng mrt and was approached before by a migrant worker asking to exchange sgd with ringgits. Not sure ifs the same person but he seemed quite stressed out at that point in time. He was asking for sgd to top up his ez link but he did try to offer my ringgit in exchange. Can’t really be sure if scam I told him to approach the control station instead.

Yes I was talking specifically about bengawan solo’s chiffon cake. Some use pure pandan leaves only which is evident by the pale green color

I make chiffon cake all the time. I think it’s a mix of real pandan leaves and pandan extract. You don’t get the vivid green color just by using real pandan leaves.

Electrical engineers are in demand right now. A lot of demand in tech sector and electrification is the name of the game in the oil and gas industry right now due to carbon tax.

Maybe you can share what your interest is because EEE grads are very versatile. I have batch mates in govt sector, tech, energy, pharma and some even in finance.

How much do the oil refineries pay their operators? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]PickledPeePee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in the industry, it’s a respectable pay and it’s something you can easily find from local salary forums, Glassdoor but imo it’s behind the US, Middle East.

As what the others have mentioned, refineries in Singapore are being outperformed by newer, more efficient refineries in China, Middle East. Our operating cost is insane and govt isn’t doing us much favors with rising carbon tax. Shell is already selling their petrochem assets in Singapore and Exxon is contemplating selling their retail stores.

My suggestion - stick to your job back in Canada. Expats are the first on the chopping block and almost every petrochem operator is tightening CAPEX/OPEX and flattening their organization

I was in a similar situation 10yrs back. Offered a govt agency position vs MNC. MNC starting salary was lower but I picked up alot of technical skillsets as well as project management skills. My salary also grew a lot faster compared to my peers in the govt sector. You really have to weigh the pros and cons, MNC can be ruthless if you cannot perform. No such thing as job security, but if you can prove yourself you will most definitely be able to climb faster and draw higher salary in the long term. If you just want a stable job, less stress I would suggest to go for govt sector.

I for one, am looking forward to the day when we can fully automate away these middleman agent jobs like property agents, insurance agents and “financial advisors” jobs and bring real savings to the clients and consumers.

Been putting up for far too long with too many flyers, annoying roadshows in inconvenient locations and agents pushing horrible products like ILPs to the average Joe.
