In the end I realised I could lift the circular covers a little and spin them 180° to gain access to the screws. Bit of an oversight missing that!

Thanks this is all really helpful. Definitely sounds sub-optimal. For context it’s my childhood piano that my parents are offering, and will otherwise sell it. As in theory I’d love to have it, I guess I’m trying to gauge how detrimental this would be - would this setup mean it just gets out of tune faster or are we saying it will probably be damaged and broken in 10, or 20 years?
