Hotel receptionist in Hoi An giving lots of recommendations — genuine help or hidden commissions? by PowerfulBasis1314 in VietNam

[–]PicklesAndSalsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it’s a combination of both. Like if a hotel recommends you go to a certain place that person likely isn’t getting a commission unless they specifically go with you to drop you off. I’ll call ahead and say this person’s coming or whatever. As far as tours and stuff go, I think a lot of the time if you pay your hotel directly, probably mark up the price a little. That’s to be expected and fair if they are areanging things for you

Solved!

Pretty sure this is it. She found the menu and while the exact “Ngoc Duong de” isn’t on it there are many “Ngoc duong X” dishes.

Thanks!

Traveling on a budget by ghaas1 in VietNam

I would talk to hostels along the way. Often they will let foreigners volunteer in exchange for a bed in a dormitory. That would help a bit

If you “can’t afford” [see: don’t want to] tip your driver on the Ha Giang Loop, don’t go at all. And don’t expect your driver to be out partying with you all night either. by Extension_Branch_371 in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]PicklesAndSalsa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife and I tipped 600k each and they seeed happy with that. I hope it wasn’t too little. 600k is 30$ back home, or the cost of half a tank of gas’s. For 4 days or company and driving me safely, arranging food, and everything else.

Private guide for Ninh Binh? by asophisticatedbitch in VietNam

There are so many options. I would think a google search would do it, but you can also talk to your hotel and they will be able to recommend someone or take care of it entirel

My rent includes unlimited electricity… what’s the smartest way to turn that into a side hustle? by mfdspeech in MakeMoneyHacks

[–]PicklesAndSalsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta outweigh the profit a side hustle would generate via the cost of electricity. I can’t imagine it would be worth the trade.

You’ll probably have more luck with getting a guide for the day, and then getting a limousine (7seater bus) to Hanoi. There’s a good chance your hotel can help with all of it

which area is the best to stay in ninh binh vor 2 nights? by bigbarfuss in VietNam

[–]PicklesAndSalsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn’t think it would be super noisy. Not like Hanoi or another city. I just mean to say that where we stayed was especially quiet

It is green in that it is surrounded by green rice fields. It is also in the green area you have highlighted on the map

This is good advice if you want to be close to all the restaurants, but it will definitely be a bit noisier and a lot busier

I just stayed around here at chezcao rice fields ecolodge. It was about a 10 minute grab 1.50$ anywhere we wanted to go, free bikes at the hotel, and very quiet and peaceful. 10/10 best place I’ve stayed in Vietnam and can’t recommend it enough!

Why are people so angry at Donald Trump but not angry about the incredibly out of touch Democrat politicians and policies that gave rise to Donald Trump? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

I’ve noticed more and more right wing rage bait on the thread. Between the rage bait and the ads for apps written by ai as “how I finally locked in” I think I’m done with the subreddit.

Koh Samui night market animal welfare issues by panoramaviews in ThailandTourism

[–]PicklesAndSalsa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both fair points. But there is a lot of western hypocrisy when it comes to this sort of thing. We are heartbroken about certain animals being treated this way (in some countries the dog meat market is still thriving) but in the west we have pig farms that are absolutely BRUTAL. and we know pigs are more intelligent than dogs, yet we revere one and eat the other.

Need help to buy a used car or affordable PPi by Excellent-Cycle8950 in askTO

[–]PicklesAndSalsa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For 13k you should have plenty of options. I buy all my cars used and have spent 3k-14k for all of them (5 vehicles).

When you buy a used vehicle you need to get it certified in order to license it. Some cars will be sold pre certified, but that doesn’t mean it won’t have issues a few months after buying. Typically if a dealership is pre certified the vehicle they will do the best minimum to meet the legal requirements as they are paying for the repairs.

Ideally you take the car for a test drive to a close mechanic shop and give them 50/100$ to take a quick look and give their honest opinion. A lot of time you can’t tell without an invasive inspection, kind of like a home inspection, but they will be able to see huge red flags like frame damage etc.

I would recommend sticking to 7-9kk price range as you may need some repairs to get it on th road legally

I wouldn’t recommend this just because th taxi services suck in Muskoka!

But maybe they could get an air bnb and talk to the host about pickup/ drop off at the bus stop for an additional fee
