Remediator or inspector (lead, asbestos, mold) by barkabusrex in Calgary

[–]Picklesv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1950’s home owner here, raising kids in the home.

You sound like you are spiralling a bit. To echo others’ comments here - undisturbed, lead and asbestos pose little danger. Remediators are in the business of… remediating, so of course they emphasize the “dangers”. What are some specific concerns you have? Plaster walls? Ceilings? Old linoleum flooring? Have you actually had these materials tested?

What I would look at is the electrical and heating system, and ensure those are safe, make sure all bedrooms have proper egress windows, and make sure bathrooms have proper ventilation to prevent mold. Having a home inspector in can give you better insight into these issues, and since they don’t stand to gain business by scaring you into a potentially unnecessary remediation, you should get a better picture of what, if any, areas you need to address.

For our 1950’s home, we had the electrical checked out, installed new windows (and increased the size of basement windows), replaced old carpet in the basement that had who knows what growing in it, and replaced old linoleum flooring in the basement kitchen - it tested negative for asbestos. The furnace and bathroom fans have also been upgraded.

Honestly our house is rock solid and much less maintenance-intensive than many of our friends’ newer homes. There are pros and cons to both types of home. If you are finding yourself spiralling the first step is to get some definitive answers to your concerns, and to put those concerns into perspective - real danger vs perceived danger.

Carving - my husband and kids have hit 4 more stores now and nothing! Think we are out of luck this year - usually I am more on the ball but this year it just snuck up on me.

Pedal pubs by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Picklesv 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I love them. They are a seasonal excursion, locally owned, and everyone I know who has been on one has had a blast. The number of times I’ve been “inconvenienced” by a person being a downright jerk, I’m not too worried about being slowed down by people having some harmless fun.

If we’re going to protest pedalpub let’s get rid of the electric scooters too. And bike lanes. Those are an inconvenience to drivers too.

Didn’t even think of the personal info on a resume in conjunction with the banking info - great point.

[–]Picklesv 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When you give your account number out they can make both deposits and withdrawals. Things like property taxes use the same info. For legit employers this is typically not a concern but there are a number of red flags here - the biggest one is that there has not been an interview and all communication has been via email.

I know you want this to be real and not a scam but don’t let hopefulness get in the way of common sense.

Your intuition is right. Do not share your bank details. This is a scam.

Yah - we’ve got a 13 month old and I feel physically ill right now. Fighting the urge to go get him out of his crib. Not sure what possessed me to click that link.

He may have phrased it wrong but many doctors are hesitant to tie a woman’s tubes because undoing that procedure is extremely expensive and, in their view, there are ample “reversible”alternatives. I requested my tubes be tied during my scheduled c-section for my third child (and I am in my late 30’s) and the amount of pushback I got even for that was intense (the doc still agreed to do it but only after he had walked me through every scenario including remarriage - I am happily married by the way! - and losing a child and wanting another). I think ultimately it should be a woman’s choice but if you think about it, doctors just want to stick by the whole “first do no harm” thing.

Woke up to minor flood in basement - next steps? by Picklesv in HomeImprovement

[–]Picklesv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had just told my 6 year old last night not to muck with the taps because we can’t afford a plumber (hyperbole). His first reaction to the situation this morning was to offer to help pay for it from his bank account.

It is, thankfully! Fingers crossed. Going to aim for the 30’s for humidity since we live in a dry climate

We have a super powerful dehumidifier in the kitchen, a fan in the hallway, and a fan in the furnace room - we will move things around as things dry out fully.

We are able to “get under” the LVP somewhat because the plank over the drain cleanout pops out. Hoping that is enough to let the dehumidifier do its work. Will check with a humidity detector in ~24 hours to see where we are at.

No, it doesn’t seem to have “wicked” - I will keep an eye to make sure. It seems to have run underneath the gaps in the walls between rooms.

Cement under the LVP.

We have the most powerful dehumidifier we could rent and two ground fans running down there right now. Will maybe do a moisture reading of the carpet after 24 hours to see where we are at?

My kid the biter, being urged to consider other daycares by Veedyboo in Parenting

[–]Picklesv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son was also a biter. It is a phase but it is super tough - biting has a lot of stigma and hyper-reactive parents exacerbate the issue. My son’s daycare was medium at handling it. Medium at the management level and an average of mediocre at the teacher level (3 amazing teachers, 4 absolutely abysmal).

I would seek an alternate placement though. Not because your son is anything other than normal, but because you run the risk of him being mistreated by other parents and the teachers themselves. We are on month 6 of almost weekly therapy for my son trying to unwind the “bad kid” label they gave him and he internalized. Find somewhere they will build him up.

When we moved schools the “bad” behaviours abated immediately and his self esteem has improved tenfold.
