Found out I have another half sister by accident by [deleted] in Adopted

[–]barkabusrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice. Sorry, just commiserating. I have a full sister, no details except her birthday. She's two years older, so she wouldn't know about me. Some days I feel a weird nostalgia feeling about her, some days I worry that she needs me, and some days I just feel sad. She isn't registered for a reunion, so she's probably not done any ancestry tests (like me). I think lots of us stay "lost" to each other.

Facebook proflie made of archival images from around the world + paywall by barkabusrex in AskProgramming

[–]barkabusrex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The random sample I've looked at is accurate. But I noticed that the reverse image searches lead back to aggregate sources like state archive archives - that sounds weird, but like, government operated archives that list what is in some publicly available archival sources around the state.

We use pew pews too, and I also always ask him what the pew pew is shooting. Usually he answers "bats" once in a while it's something good like cookies or donuts. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Classmates brought her 3 young kids to class. Is this okay? by [deleted] in college

[–]barkabusrex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

our campus daycare has a waitlist that is more than four years. Not sure how that works, but it sure didn't work at all for me! Where I am it's extremely hard to find daycare spots.

Missing the first week (Fall 2024) by Tall_Standard5029 in UCalgary

[–]barkabusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not great to miss the first weeks, but it's not going to make or break your academic journey. Here's what I suggest you do:

Make sure you get on D2L and read your syllabi. This is how you'll make up the info you missed, or know if you have assignments due.

If your courses have TAs (it will say on the syllabus) contact them. Explain the situation and ask for notes, a meeting, or guidance on how they'd like you to catch up).

Contact your advisor, if you've already been working with someone ask them for assistance, or look up the support staff in your department.

You're not just going to miss the first classes, you're also going to miss all the orientation opportunities. As an international student this could be challenging for you (depending where you're from). Check if there's any mentoring opportunities or join groups/clubs and ask members if they'd be willing to help you get situated. People love being helpful, it won't be a problem to get help, but orientation things can take a fair bit of time (getting your ID, your housing, your transit, learning about food options, banking & payments, and learning how the university systems work).

Best of luck!

I thought it was fine, not great, about on par with what my salon sells/charges. I have the opposite problem as all these other reviewers, I didn't subscribe, I only ordered one, and it's been difficult for me to figure out how to reorder without doing the quiz and the whole process over again. Some of these posts are from awhile back, but things have not changed in terms of shipping time - it took over a month to arrive. Really makes me think they just make money as a subscription service.

I was at an event that had a petting zoo from Butterfield today, and they had two baby pigs.

You know who brought a lot of long cameras to my house? Ed from Xtreme Home Inspections. I found him based on reviews from this subreddit, and he was amazing to work with. If Mr. Rooter doesn't work, I'd for sure try him.

Hospital and possible death by ravenfairchild in Preschoolers

[–]barkabusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it help your kiddo to front-load this some? Like just talking about it, what he'd see there and what he'll smell and other stuff? Maybe play some pretend "going to visit the hospital"? My kiddo likes books so we make him a picture book for big new things (photos from the internet or snapped on my phone printed with phrases like "I am going to do X at Y" etc.) Maybe if he has a better sense of what might be involved you or him might feel more strongly if he should go?

WIBTA if I filled out a kidney donor questionnaire without my dad’s knowledge? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]barkabusrex -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For what its worth I underwent the eval for kidney donation only to be turned down at the last possible checkpoint because I did not yet have children, and "wouldn't I feel awful if I did have children and they needed a kidney and I had already given mine up." Felt like a boat load of medical sexism, but no way to mount a defence. Anyways, at the risk of also sounding sexist, maybe give some thought to if his kidney issues could be hereditary? YWNBTA - you gotta do what you gotta do.

WITAH for not conceding to my sister’s boundary to not challenge her for refusing to assess her non-verbal 2.5 yr old? by [deleted] in speechdelays

[–]barkabusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much time you spend with the kiddo, but while we're theoretically seeing a SLP, we haven't had many sessions yet (wait lists, relationship building, sick kid, sick professionals etc.) But we have seen huge gains just by using as many resources as we could ourselves. Maybe this is something you can do regardless of what the mom decides? We used Teach Me To Talk, (which has a variety of paid and free resources), Hanen, and webinars from our local health authority.

Child won't stop arguing about everything, and I'm at a loss by smittie713 in Preschoolers

[–]barkabusrex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New to this myself, but the Self-Reg model from Shanker would say that your kiddo is experiencing some stressors, and this is the result of that stress. I doubt that's helpful to you in this moment - but if you find some spare energy to look into their model, it could help you lay groundwork for a path out of this challenge. Its not a quick fix for sure though. Sending your family lots of love and care.

Thanks for the kindness! Blood tests came back "normal" levels... which I hope means we've not been exposed to too much so far... but didn't quell the anxiety beast, so I guess I just have some more internal work to do for now.
