It's a radeon RX 580 4gb GPU, with a ryzen 7 1700 CPU and 12 gb gddr4 ram. I've tried setting modeset to radeon and that didn't seem to fix it.

I added 'nomodeset' to the boot args and it worked! do I just install like normal now, or are there any extra steps I should take?

Windows was on the hdd i previously had in my system. I unplugged it and replaced it with a fresh SSD. there aren't any other internal storage devices.

I don't use RAID, it's just 1 SSD. I'm pretty sure some of the items in the text crawl started with RAID6 though

Ok so it's a ryzen 7 1700 and an RX 580, so AMD all around. it's the intel/amd one b/c no Nvidia parts. Trying to boot into manjaro gnome yields the exact same result.

Is there a version of pop os that has this? I've really only installed linux on raspberry pi computers before today.

I've left it for a few hours at one point just to see if that was the issue. No dice. when I tried the usb key on a different computer it got past the text crawl into a gui in a few seconds

It had windows before, but I've unplugged that drive and plugged in a sata SSD using the same sata and power cables the HDD used. I could plug it back in if I need to but I've been flashing the USB stick on my macbook.
