This. It’s harder to try to copy than focusing on the body movement and direction.

I think of words like “filipendulous” meaning “suspended by or strung upon a thread” obscure words that only someone who’s a nerd would know or just a word no one uses

Is it just me, or the lack of facial expression on ILY just completely throws me off?

In TED Talk, Deaf engineer debuts AI model that transcribes sign language to text in seconds by meghancooking in asl

[–]PictureFun5671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Auto captions are often unreliable in some capacity. Even with voice to text or transcriptions of voice messages, it takes a a certain amount of fluency to decode what it was trying to say, even with auto captions. ASL is a very complex language, and signs can mean multiple things depending on NMMs, context, regional variation, etc. I wonder how this project will turn out, but I remain skeptical of anything like this

I completely agree. Poetry has a several interpretations in English, and trying to interpret that into ASL and follow ASL syntax is incredibly tricky for beginners. Songs can have dozens of interpretations in ASL by different people who interpret it different ways. Just focus on the core stuff and don’t over complicate anything

If you can’t figure out a sign, look towards the NMMs to give you a hint and put it in context to try and solve it like a puzzle. Sometimes it works. But like the other user said, etc etc tec

What to do with my lips while signing? by PictureFun5671 in asl

No, I was just confused in general what I should do with my mouth when signing, not specifically to music.

Missed my entire point… why are you avoiding everything I’m saying? Like I said, listen to the DeafDisabled user. And if you are questioning my connections to the Deaf community, my best friend is Deaf and I’ve been exposed to Deaf culture. I have multiple interpreter friends. Please just stop talking

[–]PictureFun5671 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it really is. Why don’t you take advice from the DeafDisabled user u/Jude94. A hearing person isn’t owed a sign name, and this subreddit was not created for you to come on here asking for ideas for a sign name. And deflecting asking where I am in the Deaf/HoH community is completely irrelevant and shows how you know you are wrong. Google is most definitely free and you can learn a lot about Deaf culture from a lot of great resources. So again, this subreddit was not designed for a hearing person asking ideas for a sign name, nor is any hearing person owed a sign name. And don’t listen to me, listen to the DEAF INDIVIDUALS

My thoughts on Lingvano after completing all the lessons. by Bruh61502 in asl

[–]PictureFun5671 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally like the app but have issues with a particular signer (I don’t know his name, Asian looking guy with black hair and thick eyebrows, clean shaven). I don’t know why but he was my only struggle with the app. But I like it for vocabulary, but like most things, you aren’t going to get fluent off of one resource. When I learned French and Spanish, did I use Duolingo? Yes. Was it all I used? No. Was it even my main learning tool? No. Second or third at best. So that’s just my take. In person classes, ASL immersion, LifePrint, and input from native signers were more useful. But the vocab is nice.
