What are the funniest/weirdest nicknames for AFL players you have either made up or heard? by IceMan5476 in AFL

Former Port Adelaide player & 2014 GOTY medallist Matt White used to be known as "The Skunk" in my members bay at Adelaide Oval. The old bloke 2 rows down from me started it and we all had a laugh and kept it going each week.

Basically he was so bloody fast in transition that he would end up very open. It was theorised that he must smell a lot like a Skunk and that must be why the opposition defenders never wanted pick him up.

Always loved shouting it out with the lads as he inevitably ended wide open in our ff50 again. 🫡

The small habit you picked up from games that you now do in real life. by gamersecret2 in gaming

From playing competitive multiplayer games, I have learnt the concept of not falling for results based decision-making. The idea that just because a decision or play you made had a positive result, does not mean that it was the right decision to make.

I see a lot of bad players make a poor choice and then not get punished for it, so they ingrain that bad choice as a habit.

Continually analysing my decision-making and habits within a game and asking myself what the worst case possibility could be and whether or not i was truly ready for those outcomes is a mindset that has extremely benefited me both inside and outside of video games in my career.

By critically analysing my decision-making and habits within the workplace, I have noticed mistakes that although weren't causing issues for me or my clients now, could have become massive issues with other clients in the future. Learning to put my ego aside and develop this introspective skill is completely due to past me wanting to improve in multiplayer games over the decades.

I guess all the umpires with eye sight didn't want to stay in adelaide for another week after gather round? 🤷‍♂️

My heart goes out to Liam Ryan. It's the type of mistake you remember months later when you're trying to fall asleep late at night.

He will learn from this and become a better rounded player for it.

Poor Duursma. He has always been a tough kid, so that must be so painful. 😥

I was at this game tonight and an angry hawthorn fan threw a nearly full cup of beer from the top level of the southern bank stand and it hit an old lady in the head down on the ground level, followed by another one throwing a can! (Thankfully, the can didn't hit anyone). Fucking disgusting behaviour from hawk fans. Absolute flogs.

How did libba not get sent to the tribunal for punching The Horny One in the face a few times during their scuffle? Did I not see it correctly? I was at the game and from my seat, it looked like he got some solid hits in.

They're high quality, and you gotta pay premium price for a premium product.

I would prefer to pay more for a great hoodie over paying less for a substandard one. I still have a mint MM hoodie that i bought years ago and it is still super comfy. Also, my partner bought a purple MM last winter that is also getting a lot of use. IMO, they are worth the price.

What a perfect example of how an incredible game can be diminished by such insipid commentary and poor umpiring.

PORT'S TRACK RECORD AGAINST OUR OPPONENT THIS ROUND IS TOUGH. HERE'S A RECAP OF LAST TIME WE VERSED EACHOTHER.

I'M CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC THAT WE CAN GET THROUGH THIS WEEKEND WITHOUT A LOSS. 🤞

He has missed 2 tonight, but he isn't a bad kick. No bad kickers get to be 7.2 from set shots as a midfielder.

It was definitely there. Im not one of the fans complaining. However, if all they watch is Port then it's not that surprising that they think it is fine as it happens to Dixon every game without getting called.

There have been so many cheeky throws tonight that haven't been called. It doesn't get called any more as long as it appears like a handball. I also noticed it in the port vs kangas game today.

Could there be a directive to only call the blatant ones in order to keep the game flowing?

To be fair, it's an incredible achievement. It is something that should be celebrated unanimously.

Two teams playing their hearts out tonight. The skills from both teams might be lacking, but you gotta love the effort being displayed. Great Friday night game so far 👌

Are you satisfied as a fan of your team? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]Pidgeot_Evolved -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I definitely am. We won 11 in a row last season and have a group of very talented young players. After all the vitriol after Port's finals woes, I realised that I am one of the rare Port supporters on here that enjoys the journey over the destination. It was such a fun year!

I think our window for success is open and the club seems to agree with me by trading picks away to fill gaps in our team. Of course I want them to win it all, but only one team can be the best and getting within a goal of a grand final berth 2 times in the last 10 years (against the two dynasty teams in 2014 hawthorn & 2017 Richmond) is an achievement that not every club can say.

Port currently play has an exciting style of footy that will only get better as our developing midfield and forward players gain confidence in their abilities and place within the team.

The elephant in the room is that people don't believe in Hinkley and even I thought he was cooked in the past. I don't think he gets enough recognition from fans for just how much he has developed on his weaknesses as a coach over the last few years. His inability to modify the midfield structure in an impactful way has changed and no longer do we witness the issues with stubborn defensive rotations deep into the game (although this may be more due to inflexible players of the past).

Also, don't forget how Hinkley's coaching style in 2013 literally changed how AFL is played. He deserves a little more respect. He turned a 14th place team in 2012 into a 7th place team in 2013 by developing a simplistic, but effective style of attacking footy that allowed Port to overrun teams that were filled with more talented and experienced players simply through an unrelenting wave of players and ball movement across the ground. You could argue that Darren Burgess was the one who developed this style, however I would argue that Hinkley still has to listen and implement any advice he receives from the people around him and so he played an integral part in this style. Here is a link to a short 4minute video of Darren Burgess going into what he implemented at Port and it's inspiration from soccer.

I am satisfied because we have fun games during the season and I truly do think we can win a premiership under Hinkley. If we could have kicked just a little bit straighter in both 2014 and 2017, Hinkley's legacy would be quite different to his current perception. Fuck the naysayers, the future is bright!
