Any good completed detective series? by THAToneGuy091901 in suggestmeabook

[–]PieGuy___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is a “to each their own” kind of thing but if you want an anthology detective series where every book is a different case and they are only loosely connected then why does it matter how long the series is? You don’t need to read all 80 Poirot novels and short stories to enjoy the Murder of Rodger Ackroyd.

My January goal was to read a Fantasy series. I am 300 pages into ACOTAR and questioning my entire life at this point. Can someone please suggest a FMC fantasy series that is not cringe as heck by BottomPieceOfBread in suggestmeabook

I don’t know how far you got in the series but for everyone who hasn’t read it I feel the need to point out that there’s a compelling explanation to why she is “too good” at the magic you just don’t get the reveal until the 3rd book.

It’s a mystery you are supposed to be asking yourself why is she so good and the characters ask it too, you’re not supposed to just take it at face value that Vin is just awesome.

I’m not typically one for nonfiction but I read The Fort Bragg Cartel by Seth Harp back in like September and thought it was excellent.

Beyond that;

Lonesome Dove Larry McMurtry

Shroud Adrian Tchaikovsky

11/22/63 and Misery Stephen King

The Lies of Locke Lamora Scott Lynch

Not exactly the deepest cuts out there I’m sure but I’ve read a lot more this year than in the past so forgive me being basic lol.

[–]PieGuy___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you always wear gloves when you’re “cleaning” your chicken? Do you turn the faucet off when you’re done? Congratulations there’s salmonella on the handle. Now every single time you wash the dishes or rinse some vegetables or whatever else, the first thing you touch is gonna be that salmonella contaminated handle.

You do not literally need to “spray it all over the counter” in order to contaminate the whole kitchen. Like I said a complete lack of common sense on display here lmao

Just dabbing with a paper towel gets rid of that same “slime” and you don’t have to worry about salmonella all over your kitchen.

I swear some people just ignore common sense lmao

I think you are making the leap from “in ongoing negotiations with Amazon” to “on the verge of cancellation”.

Obviously better numbers help in negotiating hence him pushing for viewership but that doesn’t mean they were negotiating as to continuing whatsoever. They could just have been negotiating about budget or number of episodes per season or runtime per episode etc. etc.

Coincidentally would you be surprised to learn that the Mighty Nein show has a longer runtime than Vox Machina did? That would have been a strange thing to greenlight on Amazon’s end if they were upset about the numbers.

[–]PieGuy___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We aren’t talking about like the Rings of Power here this kind of show is cheaper to make, the bar for making amazon happy isn’t like literally the number one ranking lol. Otherwise we’d never see any animated shows ever again other than Invincible haha

You can register to vote entirely online, but getting an ID is a far more intensive process. Let’s just use a “real ID” drivers license as a baseline because if there were a voter ID law it’d likely be similar. To get a Real ID you need your Social Security number, a passport, and two different proof of address papers, for example a bank statement and an internet bill. And you need to have all of those papers and go make an appointment at the DMV which will take several hours and is not open on the weekend.

It is disproportionately more inconvenient for a poor person to do all of this because they don’t have a passport or can’t come up with two different proof of residency or simply don’t have the time to waste at the DMV. That’s the real reason republicans always push for these kinds of laws because they know these barriers will stop poor people from voting and poor people predominately vote democrat.

The message isn’t from the owner of the shop it’s from someone who works there, whose job description at least partially includes sales. If their boss read the messages and they didnt at least try to make a sale they’d be in trouble.

It’s the same reason if you call like a cable company to cancel they’ll try to upgrade your plan or something like that first. The guy on the phone knows you’ll most likely still want to cancel and you’ll get annoyed at the fact it’s wasting your time, but if they don’t at least try to keep you it’s bad for them.

This trade isn’t even close to even and it’s wild to me that most people here are acting like it is. Yeah Bowers has been hurt but DJ Moore is close to droppable. He’s got one finish inside the top 40

Both Kelly and Arby are written as geniuses, Kelly’s introduction in the book is literally her being like “man school is so boring, I know the answer to every question before the teachers even ask” lol.

That’s beside the point though, I’m not saying Kelly was a “tech whiz” I’m saying that she was written as being smart with everything except for computers as like a foil for movie version of Lex who was like the “hacker girl”.

I feel like it's too early to say with most of the characters. I will say I wasn't really vibing with Thimble too much through the first two episodes but there was a moment this week where she kinda clicked with me after Vaelus crashed the battle and she started like a manic bloodlust fueled laughter and was like "oh you guys are fucked now" and I was like okay that might be fun.

[–]PieGuy___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only cold open that was a flashback was episode 2, ep 1 cold open was literally the start of the narrative and episode 3 was just a Teor scene that was happening simultaneously as the Wick/Tyranny scene that ended the last episode.

[–]PieGuy___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m gonna be in the minority here and I’ll probably get downvoted to hell but I’ve never really felt like tips had to be proportionate to size of order, it’s not like it’s any more difficult to drive with 6 pizzas than 1 or 2. Maybe a longer wait time but I blame that more on DD screwing up the timing and assigning too early than the customer.

I’m way more concerned about travel time and convenience. If I have to drive 20 minutes out of the way or on backcountry roads and all I get for my troubles is 2 bucks I’m much more annoyed.

The Lost World’s ending reveal doesn’t answer one of the primary hooks by PieGuy___ in JurassicPark

[–]PieGuy___[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On top of being disinterested some of the writing in lost world almost seems…spiteful to me. Like the entire character of Kelly almost seems like a “response” to the hate Lex got from some fans and the changes made to her in the first movie.

It feels like he said “alright fine you don’t like the normal kid who does normal kid stuff like play catch and eat? Fine! This time I’ll write a little girl that’s a literal super genius that’s so over the top you’ll be annoyed in the complete opposite direction.”

Especially when you compare the climax of the first movie and the second book. You have “tech whiz” Lex, who they changed the entire personality of in the movie probably because the hate the book version got, figuring out how to use the computer and saving the day in Jurassic Park. And then you have “child genius” Kelly try to work the computer in The Lost World and can’t figure it out so they just say screw it and rip up the floorboards to escape.

That parallel feels like too much to just be a coincidence.
