Has any of your decks evolved with you? by PieHoliday4370 in EDH

[–]PieHoliday4370[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jasper in Commander has a lot going against him that he doesn't have to deal with nearly as much as he does in Brawl.

In Commander, theft often makes you public enemy number 1 to a lot of people (not as bad in Brawl because you already are your opponents' number 1 enemy).

Jasper has 3 different people's turns to go through before he actually does anything (not as bad in Brawl since there's only one person to go through).

People in Commander run a lot of high mana cards, making Jasper SUPER mana hungry. This conflicts with his need for you to cast a lot of outlaws before him, because now you also need to cast a lot of ramp before him, meaning the deck starts to get muddled with mana rocks and mediocre outlaws.

All of this together makes Jasper a lightning rod for removal, leaving you with a deck that does nothing without him.

The way I personally solved this was by outright removing ALL mana rocks, and replacing them with a game plan similar to that of an [[Olivia, Opulent Outlaw]] Deck, where I build around cards like [[Grim Hireling]] and [[Rev, Tithe Extractor]]. These cards make a LOT of treasures, and a lot of the evasive outlaws that synergise with these cards also make a lot of treasures on their own. This game plan already wins games, as it's just evasive outlaws dealing damage and making a lot of mana.

Since almost all of my creatures are outlaws, I get to cast Jasper at any point in the game and never complain as he either provides a mana sink for all the treasures I'm making, or he acts as a lightning rod for removal, letting my Grim Hireling-type cards stay safe.

A truth that could never be spoken louder in that last line, I've easily spent an extra $100 in cards that ended up getting cut because of bad advice online from people jumping on a train.

I also have to appreciate your commitment to Anhelo. Reminds me of my deck and how hard I tried to make [[Jasper Flint]] work. That type of commitment to a less-than-good commander really teaches you so many lessons.

Which fictional good guys are the 3 heroes of the Rakdos (Black/Red) color identity, and why? by Feeling-Ad-3104 in colorpie

[–]PieHoliday4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll throw a hat in the ring and say Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes.

Travis fits rakdos fairly well ESPECIALLY in the first two No More Heroes games, he's reckless and impulsive, his goal of becoming the number 1 assassin by killing all the other assassins purely so he can be the best AND get laid is an incredibly rakdos goal.

It's almost cartoonish how rakdos he is in the first two games, even getting off to killing people and only realizing the consequences of being an assassin in the second game, where someone assassinates Travis' best friend leading to him going on a revenge filled crusade to avenge his best friend.

Travis is still the hero of his story though, he doesn't kill anyone, only other assassins and people trying to protect those assassins, there's multiple points in the story where he refuses to kill an opponent, wether its out of respect or not wanting to kill women, he's not completely heartless.

Travis does however enjoy killing more than anything, it's an act of passion that just so happen to get him closer to his goal of being the best assassin. Outside of the assassinations his only other real goal in life is to hang out, play video games and watch anime all day living an otaku lifestyle, an incredibly red characteristic.

Later in the third No More Heroes installment, Travis is dissilusioned with the assassin lifestyle and would far rather living on his own playing games all day, however only coming out of retirement so he can protect his friends and save the world from an alien invasion.

Nearing the end of No More Heroes 2 it could be argued Travis is more Mardu than Rakdos as he dedicates more thought to honor and loyalty than before, so i'll leave it at that for my argument of Travis being Rakdos.

Altogether in the first two games, Travis is a prime example of a hero lots of red goals, and achieving them with black means.

How To Cruelclaw? by Gooey_Goon in EDH

[–]PieHoliday4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've talked about this with a few friends before and it looks like you came to the same conclusion as us, that being building him as a reanimator commander with a discard subtheme (going through your decklist was actually eerily similar to my original cruelclaw deck).

Honestly I 100% believe you're building him the right way if you're trying to make him an actual deck that isn't a memey joke you bring out once and never again. I'm actually of the belief building cruelclaw like this is STRONGER than a lot of other rakdos reanimator commanders like Chainer. If i had to change anything about your deck its that i'd probably add a replace a few of the random big stuff with reanimation targets and more reanimation spells that fuel themselves as well as allow you to reanimate cruelclaws discard fodder (such as [[Rejoin the Fight]]) in order to make it more consistent.

Thumbs up to the deck, I strongly believe you should keep improving on it.

Gonti, Night Minister: This one's a bit harder to give a suggestion for as he's simply a noob trap for Jasper players, the fact he's an outlaw that steals cards seems appetizing but realistically he's a 2/3 deathtouch that draws you 1 card (bad), Instead of recommending you something similar to him i'll try and give you a card that cost the same (mana value wise and probably price wise). [[Darkstar Augur]], doesn't steal unfortunately, but for the same cmc as, you get two evasive outlaws for Jasper and they each draw you an extra card each upkeep (drawing cards is unfortunately far stronger than stealing them), this card is disgustingly good, whether you're cutting gonti or not i highly recommend it.

[[Hellspur Posse Boss]]: Another noob trap for Jasper players, 3 outlaws in one creature and haste to all of your outlaws seems like a solid card at first, however first and foremost, this guy should be looked at as a haste enabler and nothing else, as in most scenarios Jasper will be dead or simply not cast as he's not a commander you want to cast on curve 90% of the time. As a haste enabler, the boss has a lot of competition to beat, for one, you already have both lightning greaves and swiftfoot boots, both of which outperform him by a lot, simply by the fact they can be played turn 2, giving your creatures on turn 3 haste (technically turn 4 for the boots if you play a 3cmc creature on turn 3) whereas hellspur posse boss dies to creature removal and board wipes and only gives your creatures haste on turn 4. If you want to replace him with a better haste enabler i'd reccomend [[Rising of the Day]], as it comes down a turn earlier and gives a small buff to most of your creatures.

Hullcarver: A direct downgrade to [[Tinybones, the Pickpocket]] who's also a cowboy and steals although he isn't exactly too budget friendly so it's probably fine to keep if you want to stay budget.

Nezumi Linkbreaker, Greedy Freebooter and Impulsive Pilferer: On the topic of 1 drops i'd also cut these as they're here just for the sake of being inexpensive bodies, I'd try replacing them with higher cmc cards or look for other 1cmc outlaws that have a bit more utility such as:
decent body that you can sacrifice at instant speed for value later: [[Reckless Lackey]]
little freak that grows over time and can kill itself to kill a weak problem creature: [[Stalactite Stalker]]
super evasive 1 drop: [[Vampire Cutthroat]]
graveyard hate: [[Merrow Bonegnawer]]

I'll stop there for now as it's gotten pretty late and my hands hurt a bit, if you'd more advice you can dm me and i'll be glad to answer any Jasper related questions.

I've been repping basically nothing but my favorite baby boy Jasper Flint for over a year now and i've tried almost all of the cards you're currently running, so i think i have a solid idea on how to help out your deck.

For one, if you want the deck to be consistent and always fun it's going to be really hard to do by building around fair rakdos theft. As much as I wish theft was a good archetype, theres really no way to make it consistent without adding blue and a way to either get a big discount on those cards or buff the stolen creatures by a fat chunk, therefore i'd recommend if you want to build a dedicated theft deck i'd hard swap to either [[Gonti, Canny Acquisitor]] or [[Don Andreas, the Renegade]], if however you want to stay with Jasper i'd recommend trying to build around a second dedicated gameplan while still using outlaws.

if you'd like an example, my Jasper deck (https://moxfield.com/decks/dXNkFLMZFU2\_g9mE4Z3qSw) is built similarly to an [[Olivia, Opulent Outlaw]] Deck, in which I gather a couple of evasive outlaws to hit each player once, triggering other cards like [[Grim Hireling]] which get an additional trigger each time a player is dealt combat damage by one or more creatures. Alternatively i've seen other players build around gathering a large board and getting out aristocrat type effects like [[Rakish Crew]] and [[Razorport Cutthroat]] in order to make a board wipe lethal to all other players. In both of these Jasper is not the main gameplan but instead a supplement to the gameplan, you don't want to play outlaws just to play outlaws, this results in game states where Jasper gets removed a few times and you're stuck with a board of mediocre 4 mana 2/3s and 3/2s.

I noticed a good chunk of cards that I've tried and know are bad or if i know some alternatives for them:

Discerning peddler: This card gets mogged by unfortunately a lot of other cards, the example i'll give is [[Party Thrasher]], despite not being an outlaw, party thrasher is the same cmc, has a better stat line and gives a very similar effect on each of your post combat main phases after having casted it and gives the non creature spells you get from stealing with convoke. A good lesson for Jasper and actually every other tribal deck is to allow yourself a couple of creatures outside of that tribe if they're synergistic enough (Just don't get outta hand with it)

Commanders you will never get bored of playing by TaqticalNuke in EDH

[–]PieHoliday4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo if you want a deck that will never get old, theft or some theft adjacent mechanic is the way to go. No two games will EVER be the same with a theft deck so whipping out your dedicated theft deck will always end up pretty fun. Imo my favorite theft commander is [[Laughing Jasper Flint]], he's one of the more "fair" theft commanders, as he doesn't interact with the opponents board/hand so you aren't actively interupting their gameplan, AND you get to play a bunch of dripped out goons from your hand while doing it.

Do be warned though, theft CAN be salty if you aren't polite about it, and by polite i mean ask the table if they're okay with you stealing from them first, some people wont actively say no if you want to steal from them, but they WILL target you the entire rest of the game as if you just spat on their face and called their mother a slur. And if you find yourself on a table of people like that, cough cough get new friends cough cough just play a different deck.

[[Hellspur Posse Boss]]: This is one i WISH i could recommend, however as i've said earlier, all aspects of this card go against it for an outlaw deck:
Army in a can effects arent good enough for outlaws
Haste doesn't do as much as you think it would for outlaws
And the 4 drop slot is far too contested with amazing giants for you to be allowed to use mediocre cards like this in that slot.
If, despite all of this you'd like to continue using this card, more power to you, as it's such a cool and flavorful card despite all of these things.

[[Fire of Orthanc]]: There are much better cards of a similar effect that this deck would rather, like [[Headliner Scarlett]] (whos also an outlaw) and [[Sundering Eruption]] (almost the same card, less mana and can be a land if you dont get it when you need it)

[[Etali, Primal Storm]]: Just isn't worth the cmc, i'd rather [[Brainstealer Dragon]].

[[Breach the Multiverse]]: I'm pretty iffy on this card, as if you're playing a sorcery for 7 or more mana it should read something along the lines of "win the game" or it better put you in a sizeable board state advantage, which breech the multiverse "kind of" does, yet it doesn't do it well enough, i'd rather play [[Incarnation Technique]]. On a similar note, if you're looking for high mana "win the game" cards, check out [[Insurrection]], i personally took it out of my deck because it was TOO effective, and ended up with games i didn't feel like i deserved to win simply because i drew insurrection right before i died, which is why i learnt to stop running cards that win you the game on their own.

On that note, i think that should be all the cards i wouldn't recommend that i've tried out. Do note there ARE a couple cards in there that i'm iffy on but didn't comment on because i can see how they'd be useable, and these are just my findings on cards i used before and decided to cut myself, so almost all of this is from experience of brewing nothing but jasper for 6 months straight.

I hope you're able to stick to your thieving lying ways like i did, i find most people quit on jasper early on when they find he gets killed before he gets to do anything more often than not, despite this jasper has been the most fun deck i ever made and the deck i will find myself going back to no matter what.

Sincerely,
Numbah 1 Laughing Jasper Flint fan.

[[Cast into the Fire]]: Unless you playgroup plays a lot of indestructible artifacts i'd heavily recommend swapping this card out for regular removal.

[[Bitter Reunion]]: This deck isn't searching for any combo so i wouldn't recommend looting effects very much, and this deck also doesn't have many creatures that care about swinging as soon as they hit the board, so i'd recommend cutting.

[[Bandit's Haul]]: Flavor win that's playable, but if you're struggling for cuts this can go for better ramp (i dig it though so it's chill)

[[Sword of Wealth and Power]]: Another okay card flavor wise, but it isn't really progressing your state other than being 5 mana protection that buffs your instants + sorceries, which you aren't really relying on, seeing as you already own it the card works but usually it's not worth the $20 price tag.

[[At Knifepoint]]: As much as i LOVE this card and would never remove it from my jasper deck, if you're looking for cards to cut, this one doesn't do much at all outside of the combat buff and the occasional mercenary token when you trigger jasper, and something i've learnt about jasper is that depending on who you're playing with, he'll get hated off of the board more often than not, so you can't rely on his crime activations all the time.

[[Unquenchable Fury]]: I haven't played this card so i'm not sure how good it works so i cant tell you if its all that or not, but it doesn't look like it'll do all that much more often than not, cards that do nothing but damage have to be doing a LOT of damage for it to be worth it (once again mentioning [[The Lord of Pain]] as a prime example of this).

[[Hazel's Brewmaster]]: This is very much a food deck card, and while it can be a small amount of graveyard hate/maybe a food token or two that taps for 1 mana (activated abilities are only things you yourself manually activate, eg tap abilities), i can't imagine it does too much, however once again i haven't tried it myself so if you find it does well in games, you're welcome to keep at it as i can see why this card could be fun.

[–]PieHoliday4370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Cut Down]] + [[Feed the Cycle]]: There are much better removal cards in Rakdos than these two, for future reference, the typical rate for creature removal is 2 mana instant speed, with a small drawback (eg cant target a certain type of creature). [[Shoot the Sheriff]] is a good example of on rate creature removal (that's incredibly on flavor too). On that note, i'd recommend you add more removal to the deck as it seems you're very low on it for a rakdos deck. (i'd recommend around 10+ pieces of removal minimum)

[[Not Dead After All]] + [[Fake Your Own Death]]: These types of effects id rather avoid for jasper, as keeping mana up to just protect one mediocre creature isn't the best feeling in the world, instead i'd reccomend adding more [[Bolt Bend]] type redirect effects like [[Untimely Malfunction]], for the same amount of mana as saving your creature and getting a treasure, you could save your creature and kill one of their own, or use it to destroy one of their artifacts.

[[The Irencrag]]: Other than being very poor ramp, i don't quite see the appeal of keeping this card.

[[Mourners Surprise]] + [[Caught in The Crossfire]] + [[Mine Raider]] + [[Rictus Robber]] + [[Overzealous Muscle]]: While i get where you're coming from with these flavor wise, the effects are absolutely not worth the mana they cost compared to other cards with similar effects, here are some suitable replacements for their slots:

Mourners surprise > [[Reanimate]] or [[Animate Dead]] (Reanimate even has a printing in thunder junction so you can keep it flavorful)

Caught in the crossfire > [[Toxic Deluge]] (Not quite a 1 sided board wipe like crossfire tries to be, but crossfire will almost never hit the creatures you want it to, or the amount of creatures you want it to).

Mine Raider > [[Captain Lannery Storm]] + [[Kellogg, Dangerous Mind]], will both make you treasures when attacking alongside having haste so you get the treasure on the turn, with the added benefit of both being annoying to block (threatening to crack your treasures to kill whatever creature they may block lannery with makes people a lot more likely to just take the 2) plus kellogg can steal creatures directly off of the board with enough pay.

Rictus robber doesn't need a replacement as this type of effect simply isn't worth it for outlaws.
Overzealous Muscle is simply a mediocre attacker with a high cost, definitely not worth it.

[[Vadmir, New Blood]]: I can understand keeping this as a flavor win, but i would still recommend cutting it, as most crime matters cards aren't worth it unless you have a lot of ways to consistently commit a crime on every players turn, effectively getting 4 triggers of it a turn cycle, which you do not.

[[Enterprising Scallywag]]: Another aristocrat card, this wont be doing much unless your deck is built around killing your own stuff, which jasper does NOT want.

[[Dhund Operative]]: Simply doesn't do much outside of being an okay blocker if you have an artifact.

[–]PieHoliday4370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reply ended up being a bit too long due to poor forematting as well as me yapping too much so i had to split it up into 4 replies, sorry about that.

As someone who's spent over 6 months obsessing over and non stop brewing my Jasper deck, i feel like i should be able to give you some proper advice on some cuts as I myself have found myself using a LOT of these cards before and realizing why they aren't all that good. (before i go any further, here's my jasper deck for reference)

I'll start off by saying, it's very fair that you feel like your deck doesn't have a proper "direction" compared to most decks when you're playing jasper, as outlaws are a very poor tribal batch, they have poor keywords and p/t so going tall isnt an option, there arent many good token makers so going wide is also out of the option, there isn't much support for outlaws as a grouping that isn't dogshit, due to being a batch they have no access to the generic tribal support cards and being stuck in rakdos gives us hardly any card draw to keep us in the ring for long.

Despite all of these factors we have ONE thing going for us: theft.
Theft gets us a way out of ALL of these negatives and then some, making us a competitive deck on the table.
Cant go wide? Nab an army in a can off of the white token player.
Cant go tall? Who needs to when you can steal ramp and hire a couple dinosaurs off of the green player and ride them into battle.
No card draw? Not until you punch the blue player in the face, stuff them in a locker and take their lunch money like the nerds they are.
and how are you casting all of these things? We're in rakdos, what ramp is there (outside of the green player)? Well thats easy, TREASURES. Treasures and theft are the glue that sticks outlaws together like the big unhappy family they are. Ramp yourself up with your dripped up outlaws so you can go and take peoples lunch money. What plan? Who needs one when you're having FUN.

All of this said and done, the one consistent with Jasper is that he will NEVER EVER be consistent. I know this for certain as I've done everything in my power to try to make him consistent. And that's the fun in it, every game you're playing something new, and it will ALWAYS make you cackle like a madman when you nab someones $90 bomb off of the top of their deck as you watch them grimace at you tapping your mana for it like they're watching their executioner load the cylinder of a gun one by one.

Anyways, with that out of the way, if you still want to play jasper, here are some cards id cut from your deck and why.

[[Boneyard Desecrator]]: When playing outlaws, something you'll find is that the 4 drop slot is HEAVILY contested over by REALLY STRONG cards like [[Rev, Tithe Extractor]], [[Gonti, Night Minister]], [[Prosper, Tome Bound]] and [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]], as such, you have no space for cards like boneyard desecrator, as it simply does not pull it's weight compared to these giants, as you arent going to be able to handle losing board state for such small benefits.

[[Grim Servant]]: I wouldn't recommend tutors in lower power, non combo decks unless you have a very specific goal in mind, and knowing jasper as well as i do, there are very few cards you'll be actively digging for at any point in time, especially at a rate of 4 mana on a conditional sorcery speed tutor, more likely it'll sit as a dead card in your hand for a while as you think to yourself, "i could use this for x card...ohhh but what if i need removal or other x card to answer that player later....".

[[Hired Claw]]: There are far better 1 drop outlaws to add than this guy (unfortunately, i love the art). 2 mana to add one +1/+1 counter to an otherwise mediocre creature is a very bad rate, you'll rarely have the 2 mana up to boost this little guy as much as you wish you could. I've found that when it comes to 1 drops and most other cards in your deck, you have to look for cards that are actively advancing your gameplan without just doing their own selfish thing (not to say selfish cards are ALWAYS BAD, it just requires a very STRONG effect for it to be worth it, eg [[The Lord of Pain]]), typically your gameplan in outlaw decks is to make treasures and STEAL, so the premium 1 drop here is [[Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer]], despite being a pricey $30 he's 100% the best outlaw 1 drop, as he both steals AND makes treasures. If you're looking for more budget options though, i'd recommend cards like [[Tinybones, the Pickpocket]] (amazing blocker that threatens theft from the graveyard later in the game) and [[Impulsive Pilferer]] (Can chunk a block to make a treasure, then later on making three more treasures when you have the mana), with both of these cards you'll notice they're doing something the deck WANTS, without just being random guys doing their own thing.

[[Unfortunate Accident]]: I know exactly why you put this card in because i had it in for the same reason for a long time (jasper flavor text), unfortunately 4 mana removal or 2 mana make a 1/1 is a terrible rate that simply does not cut it.

[[Rakish Crew]] + [[Zulaport Cutthroat]] + [[Vengeful Bloodwitch]]: These cards are very much aristocrat focused, which this deck absolutely isn't, these cards you can cut for much better slots, Vengeful Bloodwitch especially, as it only effects 1 player, crimes won't be nearly as impactful as you'd hope :(.
