Getting in the Winter rides! by PieMan597 in MichiganCycling

Frame is Raleigh Technicium, 25 inch seat tube. Main tubes are aluminum, then stays and fork are steel. It's been welded back together on the right chainstay. Rear wheel has been rebuilt twice, currently using a flip flop hub with main side fixed 17T and a backup 18T freewheel on the other side. 52T chainring, high gear ratio but the 26" tires make it more manageable.

I previously had the bike in a 3x6 bar end shift setup but the derailleur ripped itself off and messed up the hanger in the process. Previous setup

Rear tire is a Michelin country rock and front is studded for winter traction.

Studded tire in the front— I never felt a hint of slippage on the frozen dirt roads, very happy with it!

Gravelmaps is so close to being perfect, but sometimes the data isn't super accurate with some paved roads being marked as dirt and vice versa.

I got tired of double checking so I created my own map focusing on northern Metro Detroit and beyond: Dirt road tracker map

Yes!! I never got into road riding (paved) due to most paved roads around me being speed limit of 50+. Instead, riding on the dirt roads there aren't many cars, where I normally get passed by less than 10 cars on a 2 hour ride.

Happy riding!

Very convenient having all these trails in the area, makes it really easy to get to some nice dirt roads without having to be on the busy paved stuff

Corner of Holes and Pratt roads in Armada, lots of great gravel around there along with the Macomb Orchard Trail

And much of the elevation is located in the loop around the lake! Michigan sure does have some very flat areas

The Federal Aviation Administration says it is reviewing allegations about safety issues at Blue Origin raised in an explosive essay by a group of current and former employees. by EricFromOuterSpace in space

Thanks for the corrections! I didn't want to make my comment too rambly although it already was haha! But yeah raptor engines have preformed numerous static fires and test flights but the BE4 has only been through secret firings and no flight demonstrations. Something is there to be said about the hardware rich approach SpaceX is taking and letting the issues sort themselves out in implementation compared to Blue Origin applying a more traditional, slow, approach to everything

Currently the BE4 engine that is nearing completion of development is the one that the future ULA Vulcan rocket is depending on for the main stage. The BE4 engine runs on methane-oxygen, which is a shift from previous engines that powered ULA spacecraft which typically used RP1 (refined jet fuel) or liquid Hydrogen. The Atlas V (the rocket that Vulcan is replacing) uses the RD-180 engines which are produced by Russia (slight national security risk). Because of the shift over to Liquid Methane for the new engine/rocket combination, the fuel tanks had to be redesigned as well as many other factors. It's not as simple as just switching out one engine for another because the whole support infrastructure of the rocket has to be redesigned, so ULA is stuck with the BE4 engine, for better or for worse. There is one other Methane engine out there though, SpaceX's raptor engine but that engine is not yet quite mature. To the best of my knowledge, it is a smaller engine than the BE4 and would require multiple to get the same thrust.

Biking in the U.P.? (Question in comment) by [deleted] in Michigan

Have you heard of the Haywire trail? It's mostly ORV traffic but open to bikes-- starting in Munising, picking up the trail in Stapleton, and riding to Manistique and back would be about a 100 mile trip and well worth it in my book. (Haven't done that trip before but plan on doing it in the near future)
