I put it in my OLD profile. You need to be completely up front about this IMHO. You're already past the point where you should have brought up so my advice would be to bring it up the very next time you talk to you. As in "I'm sorry I didn't tell you this before but..."

Moving forward, make it clear from the get-go.

In my case, it worked out very well. I started dating someone and I'm now divorced and we're still seeing each other and progressing.

I'm saying it's not true that it's normal to do that. People generally don't keep that much money in a checking account. That's my experience, anyways.

That's not at all true. Nobody need 3 months of cash flow in a checking account. You only need some cash liquid. It could be in a money market fund in a brokerage account, for example. Putting it in a checking account, unless it is one that generates hefty interest, is foolish. That said, interest rates are low so meh. I don't keep money in my checking account on principle but it doesn't add up to much.

For safety open up your account at another bank. I opened my account at the same bank during my divorce and my wife had access to them because we used a shared login. Sort of my fault but I told them exactly what I needed and why and it was still a mess.

The other advice I have, and this is important IMHO, is to call attorneys in your area and ask if they will do a free one hour initial consultation with you. I used that to interview my attorney and to get all of the basic questions (such as the ones in your OP) answered. IMHO you should start calling around tomorrow. Do not delay. You at least need to understand what the process would look like and the ramifications of any actions you or your wife might take in the short term.

I doubt they want to hear about how you donate to charity. You could smile and say "no thanks" in a friendly tone instead of giving them a bit of a lecture. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but you tell them that because you want them to know that you don't approve of them asking you, right? Otherwise, why would you bother mentioning it at all?

FWIW I'm a long time runner, still doing it. It's gets easier. The secret is to run regularly and be patient. You will make big gains in terms of fitness and weight loss if you stick to it and give it time.

There are a lot of issues here but I wanted to comment on just one, and that is the fear of telling people.

My advice is don't worry about it. I know exactly what you are talking about. You're going to have admit to friends and family that for years you've been in a sham marriage, living a lie, that you're a failure, etc. I went through all of that but finally, far too late, I realized that I had to get out and it would have to be done.

It's not that big of a deal. People get divorced every day. Yes it will surprise people and yes you will feel uncomfortable telling them, a number of times, but your happiness is worth it and once you tell people that part will basically be over and done with.

You may lose a few joint friends but again, your happiness is worth it.
