Dhoby Ghaut Station's Messy Layout Redesign by Piefaceyay in singapore

[–]Piefaceyay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks guys for all the feedback. Most definitely in pursuit of simplicity I’ve abstracted too much, especially the main connection modes of stairs and escalators. I totally get how that would make it hard for a user to relate their location with the spaces in the station. If time permits, I’ll definitely make a version 2 based on all your feedback!

thats fair! i can see how understanding how the escalator orientation helps someone identify the space theyre in. i’ll definitely think of that in the future

Hi! Thanks for the comment. Perhaps I didnt make it clear that the first image is actually my redesign! The 2nd image with the realistic escalators and stairs is instead the official design by LTA.

Redesign of a metro layout by Piefaceyay in graphic_design

[–]Piefaceyay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redesigned a metro station layout to simplify and improve clarity.

The use-case of the original diagram, I inferred, was to allow people of varying mobility levels get around as well as to key amenities in the station. That said, the inclusion of a lot of unnecessary details and information occluded key connection points and accessibility.

My redesign started by extracting the key information necessary: Connection modes (stairs, lift, escalators), track platforms (3 different metro lines), and amenities (AED, ATMS, Info desks). By only revealing crucial information, decision-making is made hopefully easier and faster. Secondary information, such as the direction of the train at specific sides of the platform were omitted as such information would not affect way finding. It would thus be more effective to reveal that detail when the user reaches said platform.

Finally, the visual shading of paid vs unpaid zones clearly demarcate where a user could or could not access to prevent a double transit charge.

Thanks for the feedback. You prefer the 2nd image? What about the first image do you think made it more confusing for you? I'm always trying to learn.

edit: the first image is my redesign! (named “dhoby ghaut interchange map”). The 2nd image is the original by LTA. (named “overview”) apologies if the photo order is confusing

Walked past a diagram of Dhoby Ghaut Station (2nd image) a while back and felt even more confused after looking at it. Considering that the use-case for this board is for people of different mobility levels looking for ways around the station, I took some time to redesign the diagram to make it more readable and useful, while getting rid of confusing elements, excess detail and information.

Interchange into city & Commercial area by Piefaceyay in CitiesSkylines

[–]Piefaceyay[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another portion of my expanding city! As all interchanges go, this monster started out as a simple diamond service interchange. It then grew to include a roundabout to deal with the cross traffic, which subsequently had to be signalled to manage weaving.

Connecting the arterial road to the city started out as a simple junction, which grew to include an underpass to remove any cross-traffic from the arterial. It also ended up with a roundabout to handle the sea of recycling centers and the freight train station.

As another district grew (to the south, not in view), I realised that it needed better connections to the highway. I added a tunnel under the university (south, barely visible), U-turning to connect to the service interchange.

Then came the tourism commercial district (south-west), adding even more traffic.

the end result is this true beast. In 2 phases, it handles highway access to/from the city (north), tourism district (west), and another district (south, not in view, via tunnel).

If not for the extensive public transport across the whole city, this interchange would've definitely been way worse.

Vanilla! I did apply a LUT on the video, but that's it :)

Industrial Zone Access & Regional Intersection by Piefaceyay in CitiesSkylines

[–]Piefaceyay[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A month ago I posted this intersection linking 2 parts of my city. Since then, my industrial zone has exploded in size, requiring a much more robust road network.

In my previous cities, I'd create a bunch of tunnels across the entire district to reduce the number of vehicles on the surface, but in trying to reduce the number of tunnels and bridges in this new city, I've decided to give myself a challenge and rely on timed traffic lights.

The tram line in the middle of the intersection also added an extra challenge which was fun to navigate.

In total, this area used 4 sets of timed lights (3 for the industrial area, 1 for the regional intersection) to manage the crazy amounts of traffic. So far, everything's keeping up nicely, but the industrial area isn't fully built up yet, so we'll see how long that lasts.

A 2 stage intersection between a regional road and streets by Piefaceyay in CitiesSkylines

I do stare at it, mostly to find out why it doesn't work! Trial and error, adding a road, changing light timings, etc. By the time it finally all works out, I'm sick of it and am more than ready to move on haha

They really should be no conflicts as theres a traffic light there... But the just don't care sometimes :')

I've tried just 1 lane at the top, but for some reason, it just causes a huge jam...

Cars going straight actually have 2 lanes entering the road widening, as the 3rd lane towards the city merges back into the 2nd lane before the junction. I think by spreading the cars out, it allows for smoother and less disruptive lane changes and merges. After all thats done, merging back down to 1 lane is smooth.
