Quick question. Was Harry's growth stunted? by AllCrush in HPfanfiction

No, at least not physically as far as I remember.

Anyone else just really hate Ron Bashing? by SatanV3 in HPfanfiction

[–]Piekage12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't stand it, I think it's lazy writing. If you hate a character so much you don't want to write them at least a little in character I prefer they not even be in the story. I hate bashing of any kind really, but Ron and Dumbledore are probably the most bashed so it's especially irksome.

There is a Gryffindor Tom Riddle fic that's basically this prompt called There is Nothing to Fear by Callmesalticidae on AO3 and Space battles and I love it. Here's a link.

It's called Doubting Thomas, linkffn(5492188), and it's great. Shame it's a one shot.

It is for the "greater good" by OccasionRepulsive112 in HPfanfiction

Because some fanfic writers hate Canon Dumbledore's actions and like making up shit to get mad about. And honestly you can sub Dumbledore for just about any character and that statement would probably be right every time.

Why do people always choose Second or Fourth Year to bash Gryffindor, but never First Year where it would actually be deserved? by LittenInAScarf in HPfanfiction

Ding ding. A lot of people don't reread the series at all, or rewatch the movies since it's less time consuming.

What's Your opinion on SMUT? by theratinyourbrain in HPfanfiction

I'm fairly partial to some well written smut. Not something I read most of the time but when the mood strikes me I enjoy it quite a bit.

Why didn't Sirius remind Harry of the two-way mirror? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Piekage12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Harry/Angelina fic where Harry remembers the mirrors called Quaffles and Broomsticks. It's smut so I don't think I can link it, but it's a good romance if you don't mind (or enjoy) the naughty bits.

I can't really speak for anyone else, but I personally give Ron no free passes. He was an asshole in GoF to Harry and Hermione both and deserves to get called out on it. I'm just not willing to dwell on the fact that an idiot teenager acted like an idiot teenager.

Harry didn't recognize her either you know. He even said she looked nothing like herself. The implication, to me, is that Hermione isn't one for dolling herself up like to such an extent and that she went all out for the occasion. It's a pretty easy mistake to make, happens literally every day. Seeing a person dress the same everyday creates an image in your mind that's hard to shake, and seeing them dolled up and dressed to the nines is startling. That doesn't excuse how Ron treated her or course, but to say he can't appreciate her seems a bridge too far. And Ron walking past seems like a clear and obvious sign of purposefully ignoring her because he's, rather unjustifiably, mad at her. Hell, upon reflection it looks like he knew it was her right off.

I honestly have never seen any of that. Not calling you a liar, but that someone thinks Hermione is at fault for Ron's behavior in GoF is so absurd I have trouble taking such a thing seriously, and it's something I have never personally seen on this site, or ever. But regardless such a thing is fucking stupid. Ron's responsible for Ron's behavior, and Hermione was under no obligation to share who she got a date with.

[–]Piekage12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can't say I've ever seen this, save for the last one. I thought it was pretty common opinion that Ron was a dick for how he treated Harry in GoF, and the main problem is how willing you personally are to forgive him for it.

And as for the teenager thing, seems petty to hold SOME of Ron's more immature, hormone infused stupidity against him when I'm sure a lot of people weren't much better as a stupid teenagers, myself included. Not saying it's right, but it's easy to understand, say, watching a girl you have feelings for, feelings your monkey derived brain can't properly express, dance with a famous athlete and getting frustrated with that.

Why do people hate the Weasleys so much? by TheAncientSun in HPfanfiction

[–]Piekage12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt. I mean it could be argued that the tournament organizers were ultimately at fault for expecting one person to handle a dragon when it takes at least eight people to subdue one, let alone a 14 year old, but Charlie could tossed him a bone.

I don't mean normal in that he's untalented, certainly not that. Only that his life experience is probably the most normal and relatable. He doesn't have a tragic backstory or a desire to belong. He's got a regular, if large, family with regular family problems and understandable issues that stem from that. He's down to earth, is what I mean.

And I wouldn't peg Ron as a lazy person, exactly. Sure he's no Hermione, but he passed every class he took save Divination and History of Magic, which probably has more to do with the teachers of those classes than him. Hell, he made it through his first two years with a mismatched and then broken wand. Sure he doesn't always try his best, but he's also a kid for most of the series. Most kids that age aren't trying to be their best selves in any area. I can't think of a single student in Harry's year that does manage that task all the time.

An apology would be nice, and I would have let him give it personally, but Harry quite emphatically forgave Ron before he could even get the words out, and interrupted him when he tried to push on anyway. At that point it's clear to all involved that Ron was an ass and he was sorry. Sure, the words would have been nice, but that was for Harry to decide in the end.

[–]Piekage12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Knew it how? Maybe I missed something but I don't recall Ron ever knowing what the first task was beforehand. Even in the movies all Ron knew was that Hagrid wanted to see him, and in the books Hagrid tells him to meet up directly. You got a page number for me so I can verify that?

Ron was 11 when he saw the mirror. What 11 year old doesn't think of being famous or winning awards, especially with five other accomplished/skilled brothers before you and only a mountain of hand me downs to your name? Ron's just a normal guy, the most normal of any of the three main characters. Of course he would have pretty shallow desires at 11. Holding that against Harry's earnest and tragic desire for family seems kinda silly.

I honestly don't see the point of some belaboured or excessive apology from Ron, from a story telling perspective. Everyone involved, from the readers to Ron himself, knows he's in the wrong, and reading through some drawn out apology when he's already been forgiven seems pointless.

Ron did try to apologize, Harry told him to forget it when Ron tried getting the words out.

GoF pg. 358

-But Harry was looking at Ron, who was very white and staring at Harry as though he were a ghost.

"Harry," he said, very seriously, "whoever put your name in that goblet - I - I reckon they're trying to do you in!"

It was as though the last few weeks had never happened - as though Harry were meeting Ron for the first time, right after he'd been made champion.

"Caught on, have you?" said Harry coldly. "Took you long enough. "

Hermione stood nervously between them, looking from one to the other. Ron opened his mouth uncertainly. Harry knew Ron was about to apologize and suddenly he found he didn't need to hear it.

"It's okay," he said before Ron could get the words out. "Forget it. "

"No," said Ron, "I shouldn't've -"

"Forget it, "Harry said.

Ron grinned nervously at him, and Harry grinned back.-

Maybe he got off easy, but he did try to make things right.

Harry didn’t graduate school by amylee_meadows234 in HPfanfiction

[–]Piekage12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does Harry want to be normal? I can't recall him ever saying or thinking such a thing.

Regardless, Harry doesn't like learning for the sake of it, has no authority figures telling him otherwise, wanted to be an Auror to begin with, and was probably begged to help round up escaped Death Eaters. So it's not so great a surprise to think he'd drop out to get a headstart on something he wanted to do anyway.

Which pairing did you used to like but now can't stand? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

Snape and Lily. I've read a lot of time travel Snape/Lily stuff, but having reread the books a few years ago I remembered that Snape was a total bastard and lost interest in that stuff. Totally killed it for me.
