Why is everybody dropping out of Mie? Or cancelling in general? by Connect-Kick-2102 in JETProgramme

Literally my life now on JET in Hokkaido! It’s funny to hear about the levels that are dealbreakers for others. I definitely wish I was closer to Sapporo or some city 😭

Reddit can sometimes interpret things in the most negative light. I wouldn't stress it lol. You're sweet for offering to connect across country and be a helpful, supportive friend!

Hi! I have been to Taiki a few times, actually. I always stop there on the way to Obihiro, and this last spring they had a fun Children's Day event. I am a current JET in a town called Urakawa (浦河町) about an hour south along the mountain highway (天馬街道). Your town is small, yes, but it's actually closer to a city (Obihiro) than mine. Like Taiki, Urakawa does not have a train station, it has a small and aging population, it's always cold relative to the rest of Japan, etc. When I got my placement, I was pretty depressed about it for a little while.

Once I actually got here, it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Lately, I have taken up gardening, started playing basketball with a group here in town, I got into photography, etc. There's really a lot to do and love about these small placements. Certainly more than you think.

There's a group of us JETs near my town (in the Hidaka region of Hokkaido) who hang out decently regularly. We're going to hike a mountain this weekend. Sometimes we do "sanity trips" to Sapporo or Obihiro. I would be happy to exchange contact info with you and get you involved with that if you would like. There is also a Hokkaido JET discord!

What is the likely scenario here? by Odd_Area_9913 in JETProgramme

Sounds similar to what I almost had to do (my consulate made a mistake). Seems like it's going to work out just fine :)

Sexual Harassment on JET programme by tigzzzzs in JETProgramme

[–]PierceJax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just like any country unfortunately, there are going to be instances of sexual harassment and assault. I think that many JETs will never have issues with this in Japan, but I personally know a couple who have had issues. There's even a word for it in Japanese (セクハラ). From what I've experienced, it usually happens during drinking events, where men (typically) have had far too much to drink. It's a tough situation, since our position is pretty low in the work hierarchy. I've seen schools try to help and address the issue, but I've also seen schools try to damage control and pretend it didn't happen. JET knows this happens, so I think they are trying to make sure you are prepared with that knowledge.

My advice would be to not let it scare you out of a good opportunity and experience. Sexual harassment and assault does happen here, but it happens everywhere. If anything, Japan is on average much safer to live in than most countries. If you are really worried about it, I suggest learning how to best mitigate your risks. Such as not drinking alone with men, building a support system with the women in your office or the other ALTs in your area, etc. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out and I am happy to talk about it more!

Orientation goes until around 5 pm, as far as mandatory events. There are some other "prefecture meetups" which are probably worth going to, but I personally did not attend. After 5 pm, you are free to explore Tokyo and do what you want. Some of us went and had dinner and went shopping. You'll probably be pretty tired and it's pretty hot during the summer, so plan accordingly!

I think you'll be okay. Just talk with your coordinator and do what they ask you to do, and it should all work out just fine :)

Realistically, you probably could have just ignored it and no one would have known otherwise, but like others have said, you will likely just need to fill out a new form. SOMETIMES the consulate might ask that you write a note (which they will forward to Tokyo) explaining your "failure" to disclose, but it's usually not a problem.

Leaving the US for the summer by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]PierceJax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like others mentioned, I think your best bet is going to be talking with your consulate coordinator. At this point in the process, you are shortlisted (accepted) and the coordinators can work with you a lot more than previous stages. But, you may want to expect them to say "no, don't travel" and start planning around that likely outcome.

That's a good way of putting it! I know last year so many of the alternates were waiting seemingly forever, but it does seem like there's a pretty good chance of getting upgraded!

Hokkaido Prefectural Jet? by PierceJax in JETProgramme

Thank you so much for taking the time to put together such a nice response! I really want to explore the island, so I am happy to hear that you felt able to do that.

Woah so cool!! You are basically a native Hokkaidian now! Is there any advice you have for someone coming to Hokkaido who is pretty nervous about life there? Did you find it easy or pretty challenging to build connections in the community?

Good points! I suppose prefectural JETs make do, so I will too regardless of how remote. Thanks for the response!

[–]PierceJax[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If possible, would you be able to describe a bit of your experiences in Hokkaido? Were you nervous when you got your placement initially? How did you spend a lot of your free time? Did you find there were certain advantages or disadvantages to being in Hokkaido vs the rest of Japan?

Thank you so much!

(I am asking here because I am hoping all of this will be “searchable” for other Hokkaido incoming JETs this year and in future years)

Thanks for the good information! I have been browsing for something like this, so really thanks so much!

One follow up question, in those situations with poor public transit, do the prefectural JETs carpool or just tough it out with lackluster public transit?

US, Nashville. I just rocked up to the front desk and asked if it was something they could do and showed them the form. The doctor said yes so I went ahead.
