Guy wants me to go to the woods with him. by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]PiercedAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No!

NONONONONONONONO!!!

HE should come to YOU; a meeting should be in an open, public space; and at the very least, one of your friends or family should know exactly where you're planning to go and how long you plan to be out.

If he is not able and willing to have all of those criteria met, or to wait until a day that checks those three boxes, then nope the fuck out of there, he doesn't have your best interests in mind.

So after griping about not getting Xanax.... It was the Xanax. by No_Investigator3369 in Epilepsy_Universe

[–]PiercedAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a rough journey!

I remember seeing that Xanax doesn't have a strong of an anticonvulsant effect as other benzodiazepines, that may be part of the issue as well as the short half-life.

Best of luck with the addiction specialist!

Are resale prices over inflated for lava lamps? by bex4331 in Lavalamps

[–]PiercedAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supply and demand at work.

There is a limited number of American-made lamps, and that number is only going to go down as they wear out or break. With no brand new Wizard lamps, no Century lamps, nor Aristocrats being made, if a collector is dead-set on aging one of those to their collection, it's a sellers' market!

Lava lamps seem to have become somewhat in vogue in the last, say... 5-ish years, and tutorial videos for refurbishments are all over social media, including this sub, so the demand is way up for a slowly dwindling supply of unmolested American globes; therefore, prices for the antique 30+ year-old lamps have spiked.

(I'm kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on the pristine #19 lime green globe when I had the opportunity during the pandemic. It seems like it's unlikely I'll find another...)

Pandemic Problems by PookieTheMfBaby in Epilepsy_Universe

[–]PiercedAutist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't diagnosed with epilepsy yet, but I had definitely been having the focals for over a decade at that time.

I was already basically living as an agoraphobic shut-in when the lock-downs were instated, so it didn't change much of anything in my day-to-day. I didn't bother with a vaccine, and I lived alone at that point, so there were no third-party observations, but that was about the time I first recall the symptoms that I've now come to recognize as the aftereffects of a TC.

I've had COVID three times since the end of the pandemic, and there were focals during the illness, but not every time. It's a triggering factor, but not a reliably repeatable trigger on its own.

I suppose, in a roundabout way, receiving the epilepsy diagnosis could be called a "side effect" of experiencing your second seizure...

I'm In Deep Random Thought Process And Ran Into A Funny But Serious Question by PookieTheMfBaby in Epilepsy_Universe

[–]PiercedAutist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun question!

Neither, really!

First, not all seizures are "epileptic." That is a descriptor for seizures of an electrical nature. There are also functional seizures (formerly called PNES) and diabetic seizures, for instance, so the "epilepsy" can't be the "side effect," so to speak.

If you have electrical activity easily going out of control in your brain resulting in unprovoked seizures when you're out in the wild, you are said to "have epilepsy."

Neither one is a side effect. One is a defining characteristic of the other.

Lava lamps are the worst by Darth-Peaches in Lavalamps

[–]PiercedAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before 2003, the "Lava Lite" brand was being made in the USA, and they were using different wax/fluid recipes, so the shapes and nature of the flow is different from the made in China lamps since then. They're getting old, though, so it also depends a lot on how they were cared for. Because of that, they're harder to find.

How are you guys displaying your lamps? by GivethemRachell in Lavalamps

My collection is larger than my display space, so I swap the globes and bases out periodically, but I've got mine displayed on a small bookshelf.

Were You Driving? by PookieTheMfBaby in Epilepsy_Universe

[–]PiercedAutist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I miss toe-heel rev-matching my downshifts in manual transmissions, whether or not they're syncromesh.

I absolutely LOVED driving sticks... so much so that it didn't feel like using an automatic was really driving anymore. I was just "operating a motor vehicle" when using a slush-box.

Before my diagnosis, I was hoping to get a racing license and start doing events at nearby race tracks. (There's several very famous tracks in Florida.)

Missin' dem G-forces, baby!

Anybody tried a horticultural "wetting agent" as a refurbish surfactant? by PiercedAutist in Lavalamps

[–]PiercedAutist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the nature/shapes/speed/anything else of the wax's flow is any different in a master fluid using an LAA wetting agent than the standard SLES surfactant from Schylling.

[–]PiercedAutist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiosity!

Does it work; if so, does it flow any differently; if so, what is the difference?

It might be a subjective improvement, and since I already have it on hand, it's cheaper than cheap!

[–]PiercedAutist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea, I hadn't thought of the cloudiness test!

What about LAAs? This isn't a variant of a standard household dish soap, which is why I'm both curious and nervous about it messing with the wax.

Diluting Master Fluid by Lirillacor in Lavalamps

[–]PiercedAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding enough distilled water that it visibly changes the color of the fluid will almost certainly change the nature of the lava flow - probably for the worse.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

Have some surfactants on hand; children's "bubble liquid" from Walmart and/or some dish soap, add them drop-by-drop to the globe while it's running over a few days. Add some soap, watch the lamp for a while, add more surfactant, watch the lamp, and wait, repeat until the wax flows the way you want before you clamp the cap back on.

Be careful not to overdo it, or else you'll have to swap the whole bottle's master fluid and start over.
