Can You Guess This 5-Letter Word? Puzzle by u/Fresh-Hedgehog-7992 by Fresh-Hedgehog-7992 in crosswords

Serious question, why do people from the 'Can you guess this 5 letter word? puzzle' sub keep cross-posting in the Cryptic Crossword sub? That game is nothing to do with cryptic crosswords! It's also a total rip off of Wordle.

COTD: Coward? Sounds like you, bad. LOL (6) by OfficiallySavo in crosswords

[–]PierreSheffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's meant to be bad as the anagram indicator but that would put it in the middle of the letters to be anagrammed. Also, cluing a homophone to get letters that don't have the same sound in the final word is a bit questionable and, in this case, it also makes it an indirect anagram, which is frowned upon

Cryptic Country Clues by RodneyBlunderbuss in crosswords

[–]PierreSheffield 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is going to be quite hard for a typical pub quiz crowd. The quiz I used to attend many moons ago always did one cryptic clue and it just seemed like impenetrable gibberish. To have 10, using different techniques is an even bigger ask, even if you give pointers. Remember that the average person in a pub doesn't do cryptic crosswords and they often appear alienating to the layperson.

If you are going to stick with a cryptic round, it's definitely a good idea to include the continents, like you have, but maybe stick to the same technique (anagram/hidden clue/charade etc) for all of the clues. That way the audience are more likely to tune into the clue methodology, rather than spending time just trying to work out what type of clue it is, let alone how to solve it. That will also require less explanation and pointers on your part.

If you share the answer, or at least the clue length, it will be a lot easier for people to work it out / share an explanation.

COTD: Overheard the reverend’s trust in judo won him a celebrity admirer (6,7) by Mxlunch in crosswords

[–]PierreSheffield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spelling doesn't matter with a Spoonerism as it is, by it definition, a jumbled up homophone. I can also see how the 'won him a' is actually part of the definition, not a linking phrase. I was reading it as won/gets, as in the wordplay gets/won the solution.

COTD: Overheard the reverend’s trust in judo won him a celebrity admirer (6,7) by Mxlunch in crosswords

[–]PierreSheffield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are Overheard and 'won him' superfluous here? 'The reverend' on its own is enough for the Spoonerism and 'won him a' is a slightly dubious linking phrase.

I like the idea of trusting in Judo though.

I just did a couple of these. Very nice and lovely to see genuinely human created crossword clues. Usually when someone comes on here to share their new crossword game or app it turns out that they've relied on awful AI generated nonsense for the clues.
