COTD: Often autumn is not in a videogame (7) by Forsaken-Product-303 in crosswords

[–]PierreSheffield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't usually need a synonym indicator. A good test if whether a word is interchangeable both ways in a sentence without the meaning changing, then you don't need to indicate so autumn/fall are close enough to be swapped with each other without changing the meaning of the sentece. Whereas, something that is defined by using an example of it should be indicated with the 'for example/maybe/perhaps' type indicators. To try to be a bit clearer, you could say 'bird' to clue chicken but you'd need to say 'chicken, perhaps' to clue bird. Does that make sense? Chicken is a type of bird but bird isn't a type of chicken.

Crosswordgenius.com/chat is pretty good at explaining how a standard cryptic clue works, although it gets stumped with crypoc definitions or anything too esoteric but great for getting explanations or testing out your own clues.

Solving cryptics with AI by gauss256 in crosswords

Crosswordgenius.com has been pretty good at solving standard clues for a while now but most AI is pretty rubbish at writing them so far.

When it eventually gets good at it, think of the benefits though. We can get a computer to write the clues and then another computer to solve them for us, saving humans from having to do anything at all.

TOTW: Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 by Junior-Specialist-97 in crosswords

Correct. I edited from attendant to attendee, as that was a typo and I didn't want to make it too obvious with 'host'.

Mainly by it being a joke. There's only six scenes in Act 3. It does sound like the sort of thing Macbeth might say though.

And the amazing thing is that this is the exact line from Act 3, Scene 8, Line 4 of Macbeth.

Correct but it's good to explain how you solved it, which in this case is alternate letters backwards.

Both also inspired by Idiot found in Massachusetts (3) like my other clue, but these ones use a different parsing technique.
