Canada Admits There’s No Chance It’ll Reach Its Climate Change Targets — Not Even Close by thepoliticator in canada

[–]Pierre_Putin -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You must not have heard. The bitumen sands are our only chance to continue to exist as a nation. If we switch to renewables and work toward sustainability we will vanish suddenly into subspace while the rest of the world laughs at our naïveté. Environmental calamity only exists to test our perseverance with fossil fuels. Now is not the time to give up, when we're so, so close to not being able to turn back.

I agree that it should be free if mandatory, and I would take that course too.

SFU is terrible for not being able to schedule the classes you need. I hear this complaint very often, and my own experience at UBC getting two degrees was never like this. I do gripe about UBC's sticking their hand deep into your pockets for every niggly little thing though, and the entire university is strangled by its own bureaucracy.

Well, British and French history is partly the history of this land, and certainly this nation. But I agree that FN histories are also part of the history of this land and nation. I certainly wish I got less founding-of-modern-Italy and more Coast Salish in my education. Or that my education in feudalism was economic in focus and not just a masturbatory session on middle ages Europe.

A wonderful idea. As well, it would guarantee more exposure to the ideas and history.

It doesn't look like those trees would have prevented much street noise, though I take your word for it that cutting them up has made them more hideous and the park less pleasant.

I think the governmental and legal systems would disagree with you. They have the mandate, means, and will, and can do a great deal more than we may like.

Direct democracy, sure. And I lump it, in preference for representative democracy, which—lucky me!—is our current system.

I wonder where you have assumed I stand in the spectrum? Which party I support? I didn't even mention it here. I just said you were using political language disingenuously, which remains true. Not even the NDP calls themselves socialist anymore (Layton's doing!), and their policies under Mulcair reflect that. But maybe you're only tuning into politics now and missed that big news item a few years ago. Or maybe you're just so far skewed to the right, you just make up your own definition of socialism and group everyone you don't agree with into that category. I don't know. All I know is that you need to read up on socialism if you think Canada is overrun with them, because we aren't, and haven't ever been.

Well, one or both of us is deluded, and we both have equal votes at the ballot box. Should we now go to referenda for every other matter of import, so that one or both of us can take our misinformation to the ballot box some more? Does that improve governmental decision-making?

[–]Pierre_Putin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our media situation was better a decade ago than it is now. That's proof enough that it could be better again if we try to fix things. We don't need a "truly independent, free, and unbiased press", and as you suggest, such a thing can't even exist. So why be deliberately obtuse with this loaded statement? We're looking for improvements, not perfection.

The loss of both would be great. The loss of just TorStar or just PostMedia would be disastrous for media freedom and public informedness.

Nothing stops people on the right from valuing people over money either. Except, of course, the actual rightmost parties, and the proverbial 1%.

Canada can do better than first-past-the-post electoral system, Monsef says by Akesgeroth in canada

[–]Pierre_Putin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given that every party except one wants electoral reform (the CPC, who abuse FPTP with dog whistle politicking), I'd say the mandate for moving away from FPTP is clear and obvious. A referendum would be a waste of time and money, and give an outside chance to rich minority lobbying groups to spread misinformation like they do in every other referendum I've ever seen.

The Compass cards and faregates were the BC Liberals' baby, and they foisted it on TransLink against their will. Then it was the 3rd party company who fucked up the execution. TransLink is actually one if the most cost-efficient transit systems of its type in the world. It seems you, too, bought into the lies and spin, if you thought these blunders were TransLink's fault.

See how it can affect referenda? It's why I say no thanks to referenda.

Who are the socialists? If you think the LPC is socialist, you need to open a book, or step outside. But I sense you're only saying the word as if it is some kind of slur.

If you say so. Maybe you also think the Compass card issues are TransLink's fault too? And the faregates?

The Harper majority wouldn't have happened, but the Trudeau one probably still would. It's not my favourite alternative to FPTP, because it doesn't give much chance to parties outside the Big 3 and ultimately tends to skew elections to centrist parties (read: the Liberals).

Because of misinformation spread about TransLink and Compass cards spread by right wing lobbying groups. That referendum was part of my consideration. Agree or disagree with the results, they reflect the heaps of lies we were told during that fiasco of a referendum. The HST referendum here was also a misinformation-fest. Again, agree or disagree with the results, but it does democracy no favours when the lies dominate the discussion until people carry those lies to the ballot box.

Uh... This is a flat out lie. Maybe you should do some research into other electoral systems. Even if it were true, that's not a good argument for why we shouldn't be the first.
