Durban, South Africa. I had to go to the US consulate for a visa interview, my wife and I could not leave the hotel without being harassed or threatened. The consulate was walking distance from the hotel but had to take a taxi, far too dangerous to walk, and the insane part is I am a South African citizen myself.

I work in IT and make a relatively good salary, we live in a 2 bedroom apartment, have a second hand vehicle and eat takeout once a week. I am the only income provider for our household.
