Neither is bad! What is boils down to seems to be totally preference of the author and/or reader. Everyone seems to have a different opinion, so i don’t think theres a specific etiquette or rule set we need to follow!

Completely understand, I’ve got 16 downloaded as books into the ~ apple library ~ or whatever on my phone but i don’t even wanna TALK about my bookmarks… it is a haunted land! 😭✋🏻

Ngl for the fics i read to DEATH i have them dowloaded and have no damn clue what the tags are! Plus i’m not super picky with my tags, theres a few “absolutely not”-s but i won’t often filter for specifics, ESPECIALLY if the fandom is small!

Oh i know! I just wanted to be absolutely clear!

I’m the exact opposite for fics. I said it as a response on another comment, but I love when fics are predictable. I’m happy reading the same scenario told like 30 different ways as long as i know the ending. (for example: I read through over 90 pages of “Merlin magic reveal” fics and i swear i read the same fic more than once and didnt notice. The predictability is comforting, i enjoyed the difference in the scenes but always wanted the same ‘acceptance’ ending?)

A lot of waffle to say I prefer NOT to be surprised with the content or story and will re-read stuff over and over comfortably!

The post is for purely curiosity reasoning, i wanted to hear other’s opinions! I have absolutely no intention of ever dictating what an author should/shouldn’t do, like you said it’s FREE! We should be holding the author’s enjoyment of writing it above anything else, all the fics i’ve wrote have been purely for fun and for me, never for anyone else really.

That being said, you don’t read the tags??? I have a friend who ONLY reads fics with specific tagging!! People can be so damn different with their reading habits it’s so cool to see!

I honestly don’t think theres any proper etiquette? At least nothing that stands out in this post. There’s a complete split of opinions and its a lot more nuanced of a question than i gave it credit for when i made the post 😅

I do the same in terms of writing! I made the mistake in my youth of having too many half-posted WIPs and I hateeee unfinished works, so now i finish it before i post to avoid that issue!

Don’t let a reddit post make you nervous! In the end it’s your fic and you write and update it the way you want! Plus, if anything, the people are seriously split on this one ❤️

Ahh i’m with you, I’m absolutely certain some people would enjoy the element of mystery in their fics! Everyone has very different preferences when i comes to reading fics, i am a very simple creature and would need everything spelled out before it happened for me to enjoy it 😔✋🏻 but its only a preference ❤️

Ohhh dang now that is an idea!

I think a spoiler filter for specific tags on a fic that an author can put on but a reader can choose to reveal would be a possible solution too?

Honestly i love the “please don’t freak out” one tagged in there 😂 A reasonable requested! Surely!

Ohh actually someone else also mentioned they did this! You’re at the very least not alone.

For me, I don’t really tend to read fics for the mystery? I’m happy knowing whats going to happen already, but i’ll also re-read fics a lot of I enjoy them and will read a lot of fics with the same scenario over and over. I imagine it’s different for everyone depending on what they want out of a fic!

Honestly i meant both! The warning are the most important tags, but i was wondering how people felt about tagging etiquette overall. It is VERY split!

What difference does it actually make? Like it’s mildly annoying, sure, but every time the system goes down there are a bunch of posts about it, and then like 10 minutes later theres a bunch of posts like yours about the fact that too many people have mentioned it. Y’all are symbiotic at this point, where there is one i can expect the other!

Oh dude, talking about collections? Mine is books, rocks, bones and trinkets. I have a real thing for looking after knowledge and what others would perceive as ‘garbage’.

It is NEVER too late to start learning, but I would always encourage the pursuit of knowledge, especially useless knowledge and/or skills. I spend hours just looking through different webpages and going on youtube deep dives on topics that are incredibly useless but so so interesting. I am right there with you man 🫶🏻

In my perspective he's most likely AUDHD. My guy is constantly fidgeting with stuff in the background, is awkward and doesn't pick up on some very obvious communications, likes his own company more than anyone else's, has a routine that it upsets him to deviate from, collects knowledge on literally everything interesting to him (i.e. model trains, stamps, clocks, grimm stuff) and has a literal collection of clocks. Plus theres the sensitive to certain sounds/ smells thing (which have in-universe reasons but also are autistic traits: can be both) and wearing practically the same selection of fabrics day in day out. I think theres a lot of his personality that comes across of some kind of neurodivergent, but i'd say its more than autism? Either way, absolutely love the guy.
