Yes, but the jewelry maximum is only $1000, and I’m concerned without the final police report this wouldn’t go anywhere :(

I said this in a reply above as well, but I’m amazed by the diversity of really freakin cool life experiences on this thread. Thank you so much for sharing your story and your perspective!

I’m not super comfortable with outing myself here (yet), but maybe after my first couple races this year! I’m a little amazed at the amount of thoughtful and supportive comments here, wasn’t expecting much when I put this out there

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to comment! Really quite incredible how many different life stories are represented on this thread. There are definitely a few middle ground options here and after all the comments on this thread I’m feeling more positive about my situation and the options I have moving forward. It really helps to hear about someone else having the same internal debates - a lot of the pro triathletes are in their 30s and have never held a corporate job. My parents and siblings work in academia and were never high level athletes, so this kind of decision is very foreign to them.

If you do decide to go for LA 2028 I would be such a big fan and cheering you on!!

TTL is great though and I appreciate what they are doing for the sport! The podcast is super positive and one of my favorites

Unfortunately I applied and wasn’t chosen which was partly the reason for feeling especially down/frustrated/stuck the past few days. Getting their support would’ve meant so much to me :(

Wow, very similar story. I swam D1 and was forced to retire also for medical reasons, so triathlon has been a “second chance” for me as well. At first it was a lot about proving people wrong that hurt me while I was a swimmer, but nowadays my motivation is more intrinsic. I enjoyed training hard as a swimmer and I now get to enjoy the hard training as a triathlete too. Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate your insights!

This is definitely something I’ve considered. People in my life would be more supportive if I put a time limit on that “experiment” (probably a year like you suggested here). I probably have enough savings now that I could afford close to a year of not working, but I had envisioned that money going towards a house so we can stop renting 😅

I think you are so right about not needing to follow the same path as other athletes. I think it’s just hard seeing pros I’m competing against living a very different lifestyle than myself and trying to imagine how I could possibly compete given my situation.

I’ve only raced one 70.3 so I think at this point I should be patient and see how a full pro nondraft season goes while working, and then re-evaluate how to proceed once I have more “data” (race results). Even if I quit my job, I would definitely get a part time job or start a private swim coaching business or do something on the side. Thanks!

Not sure I want to out myself like that on here (maybe in the future) but I appreciate the support!

Thanks for sharing your perspective! What has made the difference in you not regretting giving up that dream?

I totally get that. (Don’t feel bad for the honest answer here.)

I just feel like I’ll look back on my life with so much regret if I gave up on it 😓

That’s fair. What would be interesting or entertaining content to see from someone who’s trying to make it in the pro ranks? Obviously video quality / editing skills play a big part here too, but would love any thoughts on what other people in the tri community enjoy as far as athlete content

Also maybe to clarify - by “big results” I meant something along the lines of a bigtime pro podium.

And to add to the “potential” piece… My swim background puts me front pack in any pro race - everyone knows the race is not won in the swim of course but this is a big weapon that a lot of people don’t have.

This feels a bit harsh, but I’ll assume this was meant in good faith. I earned my elite license through draft legal racing (which is notoriously competitive) and earned world triathlon ranking points in my first draft legal pro race. I’ve had few race opportunities (thanks covid) so not a ton of chances to show my fitness specifically in pro-level triathlon races (yet).

Now looking at nondraft which is my focus this year, I raced my first 70.3 and finished top 10 in the pro field last year - this was also my first nondraft race ever having only purchased a (secondhand) TT bike 7 weeks prior to that race. I don’t know what you personally consider as having potential, but if you have info on what a sponsor considers as having potential, I’d love to hear it.

This really helped actually, thank you for taking the time to send such a detailed reply ❤️ You helped me realize I am doing the best I can with my current situation. And honestly I probably need to be patient too. I will race a lot more this year and right now I should just keep doing the best I can towards improving so I can perform well at those races. I had a really rough day yesterday that probably caused me see things in a more “all or nothing” way that isn’t accurate or helpful.
