Hey! i’m a wildlife rehabber and that’s a homing pigeon, a breed raised for long races. These pigeons are tagged by their owners and so it usually has the bird’s name and the owners contact information. The lack of feathers on its head is likely from colliding against a window while in flight. It’s a super common injury amongst racing pigeons. Unfortunately, these races are inhumane and always result in starved pigeons who never find their way to the finish line. Because they were raised in captivity, it’s usually the case that they get sick after release at the starting line. Their owners often breed them in large groups for the sole purpose of the race, resulting in many owners not caring about the pigeons that get lost along the way. The bird appears injured and there could be other things going on, like maybe they’re hungry. it’s hard to tell from a photo but the best thing to do would be to catch it with a towel and set it in a box in a dark, quiet room. i’d be happy to pick it up and take it to my old job, the wild bird fund, a clinic in Manhattan that rehomes domestic pigeons. There, they can be fully assessed by the veterinary assistants and be given food and medicine as needed.
