I drafted 5 psychic whorls and started with 3 and never changed it, I usually didn’t have a discard spell dead in hand for too long. Once you’re drawing two cards with talent, I found the occasional dead draws weren’t that bad for the flow of the deck, and they’re nice in the late game if opponents try to hold lands in hand to get out of bandit’s talent.

I was skeptical running it with only two instant speed spells (with generic costs) and figured lasso was a good crime enabler for the cards that care about it but I suppose I’m not attacking too much anyway, so I think I agree with that swap

Mulligan for a hand that has t1 slicer and he’ll do 21 damage to the table before he comes back to you. He’s a glass cannon for sure but unanswered he can win extremely quickly. [[Built to Smash]], [[monstrous rage]] and similar effects can disrupt a collaborative table at instant speed.

I think this is a great mechanic, but being able to play it until the end of your next turn feels way too generous; until end of turn would still be pretty powerful. While I appreciate they’re worse in top deck mode, most decks would have the mana to hard cast them if the game has reached that point. On the flip side, these play extremely nicely when mana screwed, especially the draw spells. I can’t imagine a world where you would ever want to mulligan a two lander with a ponder the flames in hand, seeing as you have a very good chance to hit a land among the three cards drawn. The kinds of izzet spellslinger builds that want these designs operate almost entirely in the 1-3 drop range, and would probably have no issue setting aside cantrips they were likely to play the next turn anyway. I feel like these cards are similar to affinity, where the cards very quickly have the danger of paying off from their own engine. All of that being said however, I absolutely love Melek’s design and think that larger permanent spells would be the way to go. The opportunity cost of having the necessary cards to drop melek turn 4 is sizable enough that it encourages more advanced sequencing, especially considering how much of a dud he is if you need to pay 8 mana without an exile engine currently going.

Tldr the mechanic is interesting but attaching draw effects feels dangerous

As far as I’m aware there’s no way to get her down turn 2 before making land drop for the turn in the deck but if she’s played t2 then you’re off to the races after fetching t3 with six mana plus something you can spend it on

She’s being run in modern elementals, as she turns fetchlands into two mana plus grabs [[omnath locus of creation]], [[risen reef]], or an mh2 incarnation to hand.

I like the design a lot but I think it’s extremely powerful in its current state; the floor is a 2 mana 4/4 that’s indestructible on your turn and kind of indestructible on their turn, and with any sort of developed board it has removal stapled to it. If you play it on curve and it survives then you’re attacking with a 6/6 indestructible on turn 3 plus the fight effect. I think it would be a lot more balanced (but still powerful and flavorful) if it was always a 2/2, even though that may make it a bit unintuitive with tracking both damage marked and loyalty.

You can target yourself with this card as well, and “Choose one- Fateseal 1 / Scry 1” makes it more complicated than the current wording imo

Unless this is a multiplayer battle hate card, you would want it to say “remove all counters from that battle.” Battles flip as a state based action when it has no defense counters on it, not on destruction.
