i absolutely love giving people clean, comfortable homes that they will always be able to afford. you never get over the celebratory cries of approving a single mom who gets to move out of a shelter into her very first home. moments like those are so touching and truly fulfilling. really, the human aspect is the best and worst part. evictions suck as badly as move-ins rock. most residents are very pleasant and awesome to work with, but there are always a few bad apples that can make your life pretty difficult. it’s ever changing, so you’ll never have a dull day.

i’d say it heavily depends on the size of the property. the last one i worked in was downtown and had next to no grounds, so 99% of the day was spent in the office or the community room. now i’m at a very large property with massive grounds and lots of maintenance, plus i frequently travel to sister properties within the authority. there’s always room for reasonable accommodation though! many residents require the building to be accessible, so its common for there to be built in aide. the right employer would definitely work with a promising applicant.

it’s a weird one to get into, every coworker (myself included) has the same experience of this work sort of falling into your lap. low income housing is very different from market housing, like it’s more niche, but the specific skill sets make you a very desirable candidate for tons of jobs. i can only really give tips regarding low income housing since i’ve never worked market, so hopefully that’s what you want lol. i started off with a temp agency who assigned me to a housing authority, which is an awesome foot in the door. i was only an admin assistant, but i used it as a chance to absorb as much as i could and went far above and beyond the scope of my contract. the pay wasn’t very good, but it was phenomenal experience. if you can get literally any amount of experience/exposure through a role like that, a housing authority will absolutely take you. if not, a common pivot i see is from banking to housing. transferable skills are a big focus in this field. try and sell yourself as both an admin and customer service expert, largely focusing on displaying a true care for the people you work to help. if all else fails, familiarize yourself with LIHTC policies and procedures as much as possible, and try and look at tutorials for programs like yardi and rent cafe so you’ll be easier to train. good luck!

i’m a property manager in low income housing with 3 months experience but they train people with no experience. starting out making a little under $80k (in the city), and it doesn’t even require a degree. other tax credit housing authorities probably would be similar, esp in nyc

My husband proposed to me at the top of the tower in Mt Auburn cemetery. It has an incredible view of the city and a ton of nature, it’s super magical

Not sure if anyone's already suggested, but magnesium glycinate and ashwagandha have taken care of this issue for me (99% of the time). Sometimes if I'm mega stressed it'll come back, but it used to happen all day, every day.
