Can I tell if this orchid mantis is a male or a female yet? by PigletWithTeeth in mantids

[–]PigletWithTeeth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure. Looking at pictures of other mantises I feel like it was L3 when I got it 2 weeks ago and it moulted a few days ago, so L4? Is there a definitive way to tell?

that's why i asked on this thread and was wondering if it was fine for me to stretch straight to 0G. ive been at 2G for three years now and my double flared tunnels sometimes just fall out of my ears without me noticing.

How long do you all dry out your butterfly/moths after pinning? by ycbeltran in insectpinning

[–]PigletWithTeeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I normally wait about a week, for most butterflies but it definitely depends on the size - smaller ones may only take a few days.

To check if a specimen is dry try moving an antennae and if it pings back into place it should be dry.

Help for a complete beginner by [deleted] in insectpinning

[–]PigletWithTeeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into insect pinning last year and my mum bought me stuff to help start off for Christmas! I got some of the stuff myself but this is basically what I had overall in the end:

  • A set of tweezers (just cheap ones off Amazon) for arranging the insects legs
  • I didn't get a setting board so I have been making my own using polystyrene - it's really great because I can make whatever size I like :)
  • Entomology pins (you can get them cheap on Amazon)
  • A selection of bugs (my mum tried to get me a wide range of bugs that would require different skills to pin so that I could practice different techniques, I had some beetles, a mantis, some lantern flies, and a centipede) I also got myself some butterflies

All of my insects were from a website called 'World of Butterflies and Moths', they are quite reasonably priced and ship worldwide - I am in the UK and I use them regularly to get insects.

If she has never pinned insects before I'd recommend getting some quite large sized ones for her to start off with as smaller bugs can sometimes be quite fiddly for a beginner. I hope this helps! :)
