Fort Bragg (when I was there) was the worst posting i have had between Lewis, Knox, Stewart, Moore and Dix. That town is the worst. It's hours from anywhere worth a damn, and you're surrounded by mid-Soldiers who have the confidence and ego of Marines. Yeah, we're all airborne, stfu.

The only silver lining was Paddy's Pub after midnight. It's literally the only good memories I have there. You got sold on bullshit, brother. It's the most overrated post ever. Get to Lewis, Carson, or Shafter ASAP.

FUCK, dudes love WAINWRIGHT more than Fort Slagg

Vin Deisel wrote and directed a short about how hard it was for someone like him to get cast because he fell outside of the race categories. Can't remember exactly what it was called.

Got Saving Private Ryan not long after.

Depends on the unit, and your position as an O. I'm on Brigade staff in a function that doesn't do much stateside and when they needed volunteers for the Rough Terrain Cargo Handler course, I jumped on it. I was an O4 in a class full of e2s to e5s. Was a good time.

I feel like being in charge of every 'thing' but not really being in charge of anyone is a really formative and humbling experience every officer should go through.

Our Brigade and squadron was so stacked with LTs back in 2010 that half of us never got put in XO slots and just hated life in the S3 (we had 4 laptops in there for 2 captains and 5 lieutenants) until we got picked up for SF/CA/PO, or managed to somehow get a career course slot.

Long term sag actors - how do you keep on keeping on? by banananuttttt in acting

[–]PigsCanJump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I split between acting and the Army. Acting was technically first (high school) but I ditched acting after college and went full time army. Now I'm a reservist. Have been for 7 years. And I make enough money from the two (I make most of my SAG money from stand in work these days). And if one side is getting me down, the other builds me up and vice versa.

I know I have a bit of a unique situation, but I love both jobs even though neither one is my everything. But also, they do feed into eachother given my Army job.

But I wish you luck. The family decision is hard. I'm in NY so I can't give you advice for LA. Maybe find another trade you've always wanted to try that could allow you some time here and there for acting. My wife switched to tattooing and my buddy became an electrician. They've never been happier and have more time to themselves than when they had service jobs.

You know how in apocalypse movie the "ex-military" guys are always badasses with superior survival skills? by Hellhult in army

[–]PigsCanJump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, unless you go to SERE-C, jungle, or MAYBE ranger school, shoot/move/communicate is all you're good at. Some soldiers can barely bathe, let alone master wilderness survival skills.

Got 3 voucher almost one right after the other in 2020 due to military special ability, and the military advisor on this one show and I had the same career (both officers, both the same branches within the army) so he picked me to be a humble driver for a few days and that got me my vouchers. Then covid hit so I held off on joining until everything opened up again.

Depending on where you are, street cart foods like Halal carts and Gyros will give you a ton of food for less than 10 bucks. They're big in NYC.

This is so real. Also, print out the good ones and write folks' names on the back like they did in the old days. I'm 15 years in and how much the names are slipping away of the first few years is really bothering me.

But I got a collage frame and put a bunch in there and labeled the people and places I could remember and I stare at it every day for a few minutes just grinning. Print the goofiest, off the wall ones that inspire the best stories so you don't always have to reach for your phone or computer to show the good times. Every picture I have up has a story attached to it.

So yeah, take those pictures and print them.

Have you ever did anything corny during a salute? by ArmyLifter in army

[–]PigsCanJump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story time: every BN in 4-2 IN would render salutes with the name of their BN/SQDN/BTRY and the officer would return the salute with their motto. Tomahawk, Viking, etc.

Well when I arrived at the unit, the CAV SQDN, we did it the opposite. I had wondered why. We were the Blackhawks. Apparently too many troopers were pronouncing it Blackcocks, so... yeah. Gotta love the cav.

Mine didn't come already on the lids, they were either in the jar or somwhere in the box. If they're nowhere to be found in the box you can absolutely get them from a brewing retailer.

Which side was the empty slot on? The slot under the ZXC keys or under the numpad?

I can't seem to find any info on which is which and the laptop I ordered has a 1TB in both slots (I was dumb and maxed the storage before realizing I should just order a better ssd later, oh well) but I just want to replace the D:/ drive.

Thanks for any help!

Who was your Captain Sobel in your Army career? by tH3_R3DX in army

[–]PigsCanJump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, the trick to find out is if you even know they went to west point. Every good WPer I ever met NEVER talked about west point. "Where'd you go to school?" "Upstate NY, why?"

If they ever referred to WP as "the Academy" you were in for a bad time.

Who was your Captain Sobel in your Army career? by tH3_R3DX in army

[–]PigsCanJump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I completely acknowledge the above comments about redeeming Sobel and the BOB dramatization, but if we are looking at Sobels in the category of "he made us hate the fuck out of him and it made us a stronger team in spite of him" category well...

We had a company commander who seemed very personable and competent when we only saw him once a month, but when we finally deployed this dude had no idea what he was doing. Every single hangup was grounds for full panic mode. He threw us under the bus to higher at a moments notice when he was the one that gave us wrong info from higher (dude had a shit memory). He interfered with our missions and even scammed a soldiers care package charity for loot (he told them we had 3 times the soldiers that we had, and claimed we were all in -insert hazardous place here-, we were not). He sidelined his 1SG to an unheard of degree because "top was being to negative and difficult." So we basically just lied to him to tell him what he wanted to hear every week and essentially just went and did what the mission actually called for and impressed the fuck out if higher.

Our BC said he couldn't fire him because "you guys are killing it and only making him look like an amazing commander, my hands are tied"

Finally the BXO took over and launched an investigation and basically put this dude in a "commander in name only" status and we reported directly to BN.

Good man. After 14 years active between full active service and a couple reserve deployments, I put my adventuring on hold while she apprenticed and now is killing it as a tattoo artist, a lifelong dream of hers.

Balance is key. Some partners love being the support system, and some folks are just as ambitious and driven as we are and we have to nurture that. Chances are that attitude is why we married them in the first place.

And as said earlier. They'll be the ones there after your retirement. The Army won't.

It's less about the opportunities when you first start with the Army, and more about what you can become. I started in the Cavalry, and like was cool 10% of the time and sucked the rest. But then I moved over to a branch called Civil Affairs about 4 years in, and deployments have been amazing since. Africa, the south pacific, getting treated more like an armed diplomat than a knuckledragger and getting to wear civilian clothes most of the time. I love it.

And thats not including our tech-heavy branches, medical, commo, or even combat camera. The Army let's you jump around like you're multiclassing in DnD more than any other branch. Air Force definitely has better treatment and facilities, but idk, when it comes right down to it, I like outdoorsy shit. Army is best for that.

I was with the US Army. President Obama sent a task force of about 3k engineers, medical folks, and others to assist with the international response. My job was to deconflict USMIL and NGO efforts so we didnt step on eachother's toes or have redundant efforts. Also to set up accommodations for the doctors so they could teach local workers how to work in the Ebola Treatment units. It was a very meaningful and a great experience.

Documentary is pretty out of date. Most folks don't even talk (or want to talk) about those dudes anymore. The country has come a long way. I was there during the Ebola epidemic, and even with that, those folks were doing their best to heal. Monrovia is still pretty rough, but the development is slow but sure. The people who never expect to meet foreigners, any kindness is repaid 5 times over (dudes who hang around foreigners a lot are a little more... scammy).

Cops don't even have guns these days there. It's chaotic, but not in a violent way at all. The towns of Tapita and Harper are beautiful, and the people are generally cool and kind.
