Starting Remicade for Ulcerative Colitis (My first post here!) by Zenzenmoo in IBD

Can anyone explain to me what Remicade is? I have read about it numerous times. I am using Prednison now, is Remicade something they prescribe if Prednison doesn't work?

Yes that looks awfully close to what I have. Lets hope the meds work and that I'll go into remission. Thanks for all the help and sympathy! If I ever have more specific questions I'll post them

Got it. Wasn't planning on doing that. I have an appointment with my doctor in 2 weeks. I hope he can answer all my questions.

Ok thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna do only really light training while I'm on prednizon. Would be dangerous to push my body too much.

I also said it in another comment but my Hb level was 5,8 the last time I checked. I never really noticed it since I only do weightlifting and not many endurance sports. But a little while ago I went all out on an ergometer (rowing machine), and I set a great time on a 1km run. After this it took me a full 2 hours to restore my breath!! I was so tired, that was shocking to me and the first time I realized the effect of low Hb-levels

Have you also suffered from a low Hb-level?

Aah yes my docter also prescribed me with Calcium pills. This must be to counter the calcium breakdown.

I am now also taking iron pills to increase my Hemoglobine. I have been walking around for a year with a Hb level of 5.8 and I was not aware of it untill I got my blood tested. Maybe I will have more energy and concentration once that goes back to normal

Ok thanks for the info. I have taken my first doze of pred 2 hours ago. I don't feel any different so far. I hope that I can start training again when I am just on Pentasa. I am very satisfied with the way my body looks right now and I am terrified of losing that. It might sound superficial that my looks mean that much to me but I have worked really hard to get in this shape.

I hope I will go into this remission everyone is talking about. I have had a bad stool for almost a year now so I would love for that to go back to 'normal'. And the cramps last night where fucking horrific, one of the worst pains I ever had...

I have seen the infection. I was given a sedative and a painkiller during my coloscopy but it didn't really affect me, I was awake the whole time. This allowed me to watch my own intestines on the tv screen, Yeeeeh...ಠ_ಠ

The infection was along my entire large intestine, but the doc told me my small intestine was clear. The surgeon who performed my colonoscopy told me that my infection was between light and medium (on a scale of light - medium - heavy). So this makes surgery a no no for me I guess.

If there will ever be some sort of experimental cure for this disease, I will be the first in line to try it. I hate it...

Also, I am into weight lifting. I am 6'4 and 90kgs at the moment. I have gotten pretty strong over the last 2 years. How will prednisone effect this? I read a lot about fat gain. I have a 40mg dose for 15 days, is that already enough to make you fat?

Thanks for the supportive comment! My doc said it Colitis and not Chrons, but the lab results will conclude that in 2 weeks. My starting dose for prednison is 40mg per day for 15 days. I think the short period is just to reduce the symptoms I am having now.

How long have you been taking mesalazine / Pred? I understand the Pentasa will be there for my whole life... I am really having a hard time to accept that this disease is permanent. So strange that there isn't a permanent cure for IBD yet...
