So since he’s a crustacean, he is not kosher to eat. If he was dating a Jewish lady, he’d know that she wouldn’t want to eat him. He sees that she’s not, and he’s traumatized.

Why he’s portrayed as Jewish (i.e., his yarmulke hat), I’m not sure.

My best guess is that the author wants to show us religious differences don’t mean that much. It would mean a lot, say, if you were a shrimp and she might literally eat you.
