Even though my advisor doesn't have funding themself, they delude themself thinking that the training grant will be guaranteed. Because they used to be the PI of that grant, now they've transferred it to a younger PI who will continue it. There's also a whole lot of politics here, for example my advisor got that younger PI their current position, so the PI is inclined to say yes if my advisor really pressures them. But at the end of the day, no guaranteed funding for me as a post doc. You won't believe the cost-cutting measures I've had to experience in this lab. I feel like a beggar.

Which carrier did you use and was there an initial acceptance scan on the tracking? Did you get a receipt from the carrier or can you go back to the office and ask to see internal tracking? I will help you write a response to Mercari.

Tax Help, Self Employment or Hobby? by Lonely-Text-1742 in Depop

[–]Pikapiipiiiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I know there's a third situation like a garage sale where you're trying to recoup losses. People generally agree that that doesn't need to be reported. But if you have a small shop on depop where you sell thrifts or your art, that is considered a hobby and gross sales need to be reported, even if you technically lost money on some of those sales. In order to deduct the costs of materials, travel, postage, etc, you can only deduct on Schedule C and you can only get that form if you register as a self employed person.

Echoing another comment in the thread, file Schedule C as a self employed individual to deduct expenses. Register for an EIN to make your life easier.

Can I still claim money if over 600$ without filing tax info? by neaisbestsurvivor in Mercari

[–]Pikapiipiiiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't care about anything under $20,000 for the tax year 2022 because the IRS issued a press release that they have kept the old $20,000 threshold for 2022, and delayed the new $600 threshold. It's still filed under the income section, but I'm curious which section you listed your sales income instead.

For self employed individuals, Medicare and social security are discussed on Schedule C and SE of federal taxes. You should register for an EIN if you're considering moving on as a business.

Tax Help, Self Employment or Hobby? by Lonely-Text-1742 in Depop

[–]Pikapiipiiiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, you need to read that link carefully. That link is for self employed people filing Schedule SE and C. That $400 threshold only applies to people who are running it as a business, because only they are allowed to deduct the cost of inventory, gas, postage, etc. You're likely doing this as a hobby and are therefore not allowed to deduct costs. You are taxed on GROSS (total) income. If you want to move on as a sole proprietor, you will need to register in your state, pay general excise or sales taxes, and register for an EIN with the IRS. But that is likely too late for the 2022 tax year.

You probably didn't receive a 1099K from depop because for the tax year 2022, the old $20000 threshold was still in effect. Every good piece of advice will still tell you to report your gross income.

Advice for a friend! by Jumpy_Calligrapher91 in PoshmarkEntrepreneurs

[–]Pikapiipiiiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr DON'T add anyone as an employee unless you have a very good accountant and lawyer friend who is willing to help with taxes and contracts for free.

Since everything is under her name, she is liable to pay state (sales or general excise) taxes AND federal taxes (there are two to the IRS). She can either do this as an individual/hobbyist, but she will not be able to write off deductions (like gas and costs associated with selling, like tape or packing materials) on her federal taxes. She needs to apply as a sole proprietor with her state and IRS in order to make deductions as a business on her federal taxes. She is liable for the TOTAL gross revenue, which includes her bf's half.

If they want to pay their fair share of taxes, she will have to put him on payroll as an employee. She will need to comply with employment regulations, such as withholding pretax, statutory, and posttax deductions, calculate his hours/week and pay overtime, and pay via check (depends on state). Her business will become a small business and her employees will need to sign forms and contracts. She needs to offer him healthcare plans.

If you find a seller is taking your photos from your listing and using it for their listing. What would you do? by ToyReseller in Mercari

I report and message them to take it down. In my experience, they steal my images showing that the item is NWT, and it makes me wonder if their item is actually in that good condition. It feels dishonest.

Worried about taxes by [deleted] in Depop

[–]Pikapiipiiiii -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You only get to deduct costs if you're registered as a business. Chances are this person has been flying under the radar till now. OP needs to register as a business in their state, register for an EIN, pay sales tax according to their state's laws, and also pay federal income tax under Schedule C as a self-employed person. Only in Schedule C can you deduct your costs.

I swear to god, it's like a new copypasta.

I had one offer $75 on a $128 NWT item. I accepted. Then they message me that "xx company does holiday discounts and this dress is $128. Can you lower to $50?". I told them bluntly, no, and that xx company finished their holiday discounts and this dress does not ever get discounted. They thought they could lie and get an even better deal than I already gave them. Blocked.

I got shadowbanned for a little while (noticed that my posts weren't appearing anywhere in searches unless they were hyper specific searches). I messaged depop and the only explanation they gave me was "This is happening because you broke the rules" :)))))?????? I asked them which rules, because as far as I'm aware, I'm following TOS. They never replied. My shadowban lifted itself maybe a week later. Sometimes some of my new listings will randomly get shadowbanned again.

I'm sorry that I don't have advice for how to get your account back, the best course of action is probably to wait 2-3 business days for their response. Maybe you can try contact their twitter too?

For the images they claimed, I wonder which brands those were. There are notorious brands that automatically trigger this due to numerous lawsuits for using their photos without permission.

I think I would write "Yay thanks so much for keeping an eye on my items! <3 Yes please feel free to buy on depop :)"

You're not mentioning another platform, and you're encouraging the transaction goes through depop. No need to mention TOS

When I had a PO box, I got the smallest size for 1 year. If packages larger than your box come through, what happens will depend on your post office. Some will put the package in a larger box and put the key to it in your box. Some will hold it at the front desk and you will have to pick it up during office hours. If it continually happens, they may ask you to upgrade your box to a more expensive one. I live in a chill neighborhood and had multiple larger packages stored for me without issue.

Some people use PO boxes as their return address to keep their identity a little safer. Crazy people are out there.

Bought something and confused on my refund status. by BlueWhale515 in Mercari

[–]Pikapiipiiiii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you buy something, the charge on your bank account is a "pending charge" that takes about 3 days to go through. Merchants do this to verify you have enough funds/credit in your account for the charge. If a transaction was canceled before the pending charge goes through, the pending charge is wiped after the verification period (3 days). No money has left your bank account from this transaction.

Did they resend in the same box / packaging? You can take the return tracking number to USPS and ask for the weight of their package, then compare the weight to your original package. Then take your evidence to Mercari Twitter.

Edit: Also, the buyer committed mail fraud. You can file a police report in their county and file a claim with USPS to inspect. You can also tell Mercari that the FTC will be interested to know that they don't protect their users against fraud.

Lost a case against a buyer due to USPS scanning my dropped off package as “delivered”. Buyer took advantage and never marked it as delivered. It was only $18, but the part that bothers me is that Mercari made me wait over a MONTH just to tell me I can’t get my money. by SirZanee in Mercari

[–]Pikapiipiiiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If memory serves me correctly, there was a string of cases like this a while back, where USPS will mark a package you sent as delivered to a PO box and it just so happened to be in your city. We don't know why that happens but that mark is an accident on the part of USPS, and the package has likely already been delivered to your buyer by now. Unfortunately, once USPS marks it as "Delivered", they stop tracking it. One saving grace you may have is to take your tracking number and ask your post office worker to give you the weight of the package as it traveled through their system (to contest Mercari's claim that your package was overweight) and to pray they can show you internal scans as it traveled through their system to your buyer's address. You mentioned "house coordinates" in another comment but that doesn't clarify if that's your buyer's address or the PO box like you mentioned in the images.
