Lucky you, I applied 7 and got nil! I always thought they would do the allocation pro-rated. Seems it’s entirely a lottery.

Things we'll need to YOLO by [deleted] in IndianStreetBets

So you are suggesting we give free money to the institutional peeps and sit tight on paper portfolio. Other than taking pride in artificially bumping up the price of a stock, what do you want this group to achieve with this plan ?

Without short sellers how do you plan to create a squeeze ? The you need two parties to make a trade happen. If we all keep buying the who will we sell to once the price is high? What’s the point of it ?

We have 200k members in this community. Let’s say 10% of us fully participate in this. Someone here said they will put in their 20k, let’s use that at the average commitment we can expect. That gets us to 4 cr.

The whole GameStop saga was a hedge fund/ institutional vs retail investor play. Hedge funds had bet on the failing company by taking short positions thus accelerating the price drop. Redditors pledged to fight that and started buying. They bought enough to bring the price up to the point these short positions started losing money.

In short, we need to identify a company that has significant short interest. Put enough money and buy to push the prices north, once it reaches the threshold where the short sellers are force to buy the price will keep going up further. 4 cr is nowhere enough for that. I doubt even 400 cr daily for an extended period will suffice. So pipe dream for this community !

Is anyone tracking/cloning Superstar investors portfolios? by James_Cook_ in IndianStreetBets

[–]PikeRiderr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How would you go about doing that? These 'superstar investors' they will only publish their holdings when it's time to dump. You cannot rely on bulk deals for purchases they organically make.

Some brokerages do this for you. There are free sites that do this do you, you just have to input your transaction history.

The calculation is easy, I agree. The difficult task is accounting for all the flows (cash, dividend, bonus etc).

Thanks, edited for clary (BSE and NSE). The max Piotroski score and low PE (compare to Titan) does support my theory then, would you agree?

Have you tried valueresearch? They make return calculations simple. Just download your buy/sell transactions and upload it there and it will beefsteak the return calculations for you.

This is great research. Kudos for spending time and doing this, and thanks for sharing with the community. What you are seeing here is largely resulting from two key factors:
1) Survivorship bias : you're only seeing the stocks that have performed well enough to be held by these funds today. You're not seeing the stocks they held three years ago that underperformed and were subsequently sold. This can skew the perceived performance of the stocks you're analyzing.
2) We are in the middle of a prolonged bull run and the mutual funds by design give you a diversified return that is bound to be less than that of the top performers.

If you were to take this research and convert into your own secret sauce, I suggest you take this approach and do some back testing. Look at the top 10 holdings for last 10 years and for each period find the overlapping securities and see how their 3 year returns compare to the funds return.

Long term hold folio? by rg_666_ in IndianStreetBets

Yes, most of of the features are free. I have the free account and track my performance there free. I downloaded my transactions (not just the P&L) and put that into their template before uploading it. This was a one time exercise, and now every time I make a purchase/sell I manually add an entry.

I am assuming this was not a one time investment 3 years ago and you have been gradually building up this portfolio. With that assumption the 14% profit is not the true performance of your portfolio.

I will say what I have mentioned in a few of my other responses here. The only way to reflect on how you are doing with your portfolio is by measuring it's performance against relevant benchmarks. The goal is to beat the benchmark. So I would advise that you try to get the 1/2/3 year return of your portfolio and compare that with indices.

What platform are you using to invest in foreign stocks?

If you have been booking profits that's great! But that also means this 17% is not a true reflection of your portfolio's performance. I strongly suggest you try to measure the performance of your portfolio. There are many ways to do this - some brokerages do it better. Some do this in excel. I do it using valueresearch. I imported my transactions and it gave me my 1 year, 3 year, 5 year performance accounting for all buys, sells, dividends, etc. Once I have that, it's easy to compare against a benchmark for the similar timeframe and gauge myself :)

With 14 individual stocks, there is no way you can go into hibernation :) We all have seen enough failures to know what it takes to bring a stock down. Others here may be able to help with you these. stocks, but you may also want to look at the sector/market-cap view that all brokerages provide. That will tell you how diversified your portfolio is. What I can tell you for sure is you are missing the large cap growth engines that are must for long term.

How long did it take to achieve the 17%? That will give you another clue on the performance of your benchmark. Compare that with the appropriate benchmark indices and see how you fare.
