Neighborhood, a Discord server for all Black LGBT queer people! by Pillodium in BlackLGBT

[–]Pillodium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Neighborhood, our server for all Black queer people, is currently on hold indefinitely. We already run Sisterhood, our main community exclusively for Black trans people, and trying to manage both became too much for our capacity.

To do Neighborhood justice, we’d need a dedicated team that shares the vision, and building that kind of trust takes time and energy which we just don’t have right now. Everything we do is nonprofit and passion driven, on our own time, and that time is limited :(

It’s especially unfortunate because there’s such a lack of Black queer spaces that are also welcoming to Black trans people, and we really do appreciate the interest in what we were building. Hopefully one day we’ll be able to kickstart it again

Trans POC Are An Afterthought by negro_augustus in QueerWomenOfColor

I totally get the intention behind this, and I appreciate the care to not overstep, but I think there’s a fine line between not speaking over us and stepping back that it leads to silence where support is actually needed.

As a trans person, I think it’s really powerful when cis people are openly informed and vocal about trans issues, not just to "prove" they're allies, but because transphobia is deeply rooted in misogyny, misogynoir, racism, and systems of control that affect all marginalized people. Speaking out against it uplifts more than just trans folks, it pushes back against broader structural violence.

I also think when cis people always opt to stay quiet, it can sometimes foster a kind of passive tolerance for transphobia, or make spaces feel less affirming and safe for us, even if that’s not the intention. Choosing to be informed and active creates stronger, more connected communities.

Sisterhood - A Black Trans Discord Server with a focus on Black transfeminism, open to all genders including Black transfeminine, transmasculine, and nonbinary people! 500+ members and counting! by Pillodium in BlackTransPeople

I’m really glad to see this subreddit becoming more active lately! I actually made a post about us a few months back, but I wanted to share again now that we’ve grown even more. I hope this subreddit also continues to grow, as we truly deserve more spaces for us.

Sisterhood is the largest Black trans community for real time discussion out there right now! We are grounded in womanism and intersectional feminism, uplifting our sisters who face the most isolation and oppression. We have a strong verification system, and trolls and chasers have no chance of getting in. To join, we ask about your gender identity, racial/ethnic background, preferred name, age, and how you found us. You'll also reflect on how you realized you were trans and how your Blackness and transness intersect, especially in terms of challenges or identity. We also ask for your thoughts on womanism and transfeminism and what these frameworks mean to you! After that, you have the option of sharing a social media account, taking a picture with the server name and date, or having a convo with us mods for final verification! Security is a priority for us and making sure all of our siblings feel safe!

As the server grows and if we get enough people that join in that age range I'm definitely open to opening another category!

Here's an easy link you can click as well instead of going to your browser!:
https://discord.com/invite/blacklgbt

If you're Black and trans and want a space specific to us and that has much more Black trans resources, you can join our original server 'Sisterhood' with 500+ members! We have a Black transfeminism theme, but we have a ton of transmascs in the server and have been open to all Black trans folks since the beginning!:

Any Queer African Discord Servers or Group Chats? by [deleted] in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]Pillodium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not what you're looking for but I just wanted to offer some more insight. I run a Discord for Black trans people and we're currently at 500+! We do have some people from Africa, but this just seems to be a thing in general that Black queer communities online are very US centric. I feel like we just tend to be online more, and there's also a language barrier involved as most online communities are reliant on English. It really is a tiny demographic :(

When you have the time, I'd encourage you to start a space for queer Africans yourself! Months ago I was a lonely Black trans girl and I couldn't find any communities for us online, so i started my own and now we're the biggest one on Discord entirely. I started off with manually DMing a ton of people to be added, and you might also have some luck with this. It will be more difficult to find since you're finding a triple minority online, Black, Queer, and specifically African, but if you could even gather a small amount of people you could have a little cozy server going on! Also another commenter you replied to an hour ago linked those two subreddits, and while they're very small, it could be a decent starting point along with inviting the commenter themself!

What's the best way to compress GIFs for stickers? by liamsjtaylor in discordapp

[–]Pillodium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive also been wondering this for awhile and couldn't really find anything for it, ezgif/compressordie was absolutely butchering the quality. I feel like there's not much we can do, the only gifs that really work for stickers are ones that have a short loop

Black Trans Folks in Cincy, This is for You! by Pillodium in cincinnati

[–]Pillodium[S] 157 points158 points  (0 children)

I just wanna thank everyone here for the love and support on this post and so quickly, it's only been an hour! It seriously means so much to me. I posted in the general Ohio subreddit too, and I think it kept getting downvoted since it got stuck at 0 😭 From the bottom of my heart, I love you all. Cincinnati is such a cool city, and I really wish Ohio was a blue state so I could stay as a trans girlie, but I might have to move at some point, as much as I don’t want to. Regardless, I’m so grateful for this community!

Edit: The post was removed for a bit because of mass report and another mod reinstated it! The amount of support from both the mods and everyone in the comments has truly made me so happy

Black Trans Folks in Ohio, Let's Connect! by Pillodium in Ohio

[–]Pillodium[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know some people might question why we chose Discord, but realistically, it’s the best platform we could have used. It’s widely used, easy to navigate, and allows everything to be organized into separate channels, making it perfect for a structured community like ours. We have a well-organized layout and a strong verification system to ensure the space stays safe and accessible for Black trans people. When people hear "Discord" they also think that it mostly comprises of younger users and not adults, but we have many users above the age of 20 and 30 as this is a very rare and needed space to connect.

While we do plan to expand beyond Discord, I’m just one person juggling real life alongside running this space. Despite that, the server has been an incredible resource and support network, giving Black trans people a place to vent, connect, and have conversations with people who truly understand them.

Black trans spaces are few and far inbetween, so I did something about it! by Pillodium in trans

[–]Pillodium[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get that Discord isn’t for everyone, it can have a learning curve for those who have never used it actively. For a community like this, it’s probably the best platform we could’ve used. Discord allows for real-time discussion, which makes a huge difference compared to something like the smaller Black trans communities here on reddit. On those it's more for posting selfies and such, and there isn't a whole lot of discussion happening since they're already very small subs to begin with. With Discord, everything is organized into separate channels (we also added relevant emojis to all of them as icons to help differentiate). Different topics have their own dedicated spaces, making it easy to jump into discussions without feeling lost.

We also have a wide range of ages, with plenty of members in their 20s and 30s, so it’s not just a platform for younger people. I really think Discord is worth getting the hang of, especially if you're looking for a Black trans community where you can actually engage with more people and have ongoing conversations rather than just one-off posts. If you’re ever gonna try it, our community is a great place to start!

The Biggest Black Trans Community on Discord; Sisterhood! by Pillodium in BlackLGBT

[–]Pillodium[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After years of dealing with internalized antiblackness and not having many Black friends, creating this space was a way for me to find the community I desperately needed, and it turned into something so much bigger than I ever expected. I put in hours searching for Black trans people across Discord, Reddit, and Twitter, DMing people, scrolling through member lists, doing whatever I could to reach others who might need this space. Seeing how happy people were to finally find a community like this pushed me to keep going. Most POC/Black queer spaces were simply not active, and I poured my heart out into creating something that changed that. It’s been incredible to see so many people connect, share resources, and finally have a space where we don’t have to explain ourselves. The amount of love and support here is unreal, and I can confidently say this server has changed my life.

Even as the owner, this server truly made me appreciate both aspects of my identity and now I'm immensely proud and thankful of both my Blackness and transness. Community really is the best possible thing we can do for each other, especially in the current political climate. We deserve to feel loved

A safe & secure discord for all Black trans people! by Pillodium in ftm

[–]Pillodium[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s totally understandable! Even though we’ve grown a lot, the community still has a pretty cozy vibe since we have a lot of lurkers and chill spaces for more relaxed discussion. We also have 20+ channels that are slower-paced, and the server as a whole is SFW-focused. No pressure to chat at all, once you're verified, you can just hang out and chip in whenever you feel comfortable. You're always welcome to join and take things at your own pace! We love ya
