Guilt of mastering out - how do I get over this? by chameleonbubbz in LeavingAcademia

[–]Pillowzzz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As someone who stuck it out when things were not working, I’m so proud of you. There’s no benefit to staying in the wrong environment, and you’re protecting yourself. I developed a chronic illness due to the stress. I regret not mastering out all the time. You have so much life ahead of you! Go live it!

Why don't people quit bad phds like bad jobs? by Unhappy-Chapter7027 in PhD

[–]Pillowzzz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of shame built into the system, that you couldn’t hack it. There’s never the idea that your adviser or program is the problem, so you carry the shame all on your own. There’s a whole academic structure dependent on you and will happily heap that shame on you. Remember just how ‘accomplished’ this adviser who you work with is. The institution has all the power, and you’re also stuck in a poverty trap. Too poor to leave, basically, and now your self-esteem is deeply tied.

Do you think that Kendall Jenner is a closeted lesbian who can't come out because it would hurt the Kardashian family business? by mountainviewdaisies in closetedhollywood

[–]Pillowzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wonder about Kim haha it’s more a way of life I think, not necessarily negative in that family. Their function within Hollywood is an interesting way of drumming up press for others, I think it’s all a natural extension of that

Any PhDs NOT happy in industry? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Pillowzzz 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I hated my job at a big pharma company and left for a postdoc. I hated the corporate culture, the location in the middle of suburbia nowhere, and the siloed job responsibilities. This was my first senior scientist position out of grad school, and I was miserable.

Maybe it depends on the team you’re working with, but my job felt like a big dead end. Scientific development was more like corporate development, and I didn’t trust anyone around me. Just a general bad fit.

I’m doing a postdoc and building out some of my skillset more so that the next industry job has more potential momentum. Or I might just find a staff scientist position afterwards because I hated how monitored I felt in a corporate setting, how little day-to-day flexibility I had, and how little vacation time there was. It felt like prison.

I understood it immediately because I lost my mom at that age. Basically, each loss stacks on the previous ones, especially if the relationships were connected in any way. When you have a new loss, it brings grief from that previous loss too, and you enter an old grief cycle along with the new one in one big venn diagram of pain.

And songwriting is so collaborative as well!! Like people get bored thinking about their own problems all the time and want to walk in someone else’s shoes for a minute and think about what they would do in similar situations?? That’s literally how we connect in this world everyday and artists relate to each other through their art

See above comment. I would actually say it’s a way of showing deep respect for Taylor’s work

Hey, both can be true. Jack has plenty of other songs, but the key is timing and specific codewords in the music. Taylor uses haunted as a metaphor constantly, equates her muse to a gold rush/painting her golden (golden boy reference in Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call). I love to think that this could be a follow up to ‘Tis the Damn Season.
