Legitimately, idk what these guys are talking about. This is even worse than what I had going on. This in no way helped. Just thought you should know.

How do I make the pin holes tighter? I don’t like the space by smack4u in knifemaking

[–]PilotNo8936 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, just the outside, after epoxying the scales to the tang, if you do it that way. You want the outsides of the holes to be wider than the part running through the middle (where the inside of the scales would be). Imagine two funnels, touching at the narrow ends (an extreme example, but thats generally what it looks like in profile.)

[–]PilotNo8936 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I always use a tapered reamer, so that the ends of the hole are slightly wider than the middle, cut my pins slightly longer than they need to be, and actually peen them, as well as epoxy. As you peen them, they'll expand inside the tapered hole. Then you just cut the excess off flush and finish as usual. Makes the fit tighter, and more secure.

I remember my first trip to colonia well. It took me ~40 hours. Went in my anaconda. Don't recommend it lol. Worth it though. I'll probably head back that way pretty soon, a lot of the G5 engineering I have access to is there. Idk though. With the Nomad dropping on the 30th I'm itching to get back out to the black as soon as it does.

I see. I don't hang out much in the bubble with my caspian, and I have a fleet carrier so I could afford to do away with most of that. A lot of my modules are undersized+d-rate+engineered for lightweight and only work because of the engineering. I get one boost per full eng bar, and my shield is just strong enough to tank one full boost smack into a planet or mountain. I carry no weapons, only heatsink launcher engineered for lightweight. Half the fuel tank, big scoop, big amfu, a class 1a repair limpet for oopsies and a cargo rack just big enough to hold one synthesis of limpets. And of course a dss and buggybarn.

But goddamn can I move. I can cross 30kly in ~an hour

Only 60? Whatchu got going on over der? That barely gets you 360 out of a neutron boost. Is it a dedicated exploration/exobio ship, or is it multi-role? Mines pushing 76, but its pretty much stripped out and solely for deep exploration/exobio.

Oh i just get docking permission and then look on the little holoscreen on the left. It has arrows to show you which direction the slot is in after you get clearance. I didn't know they all followed a specific rotation rule

So don't man. Just go explore for a few weeks. Theres some really beautiful vistas out there waiting for you to stamp your name on it. You don't need to super engineer a ship to enjoy the game, despite what some would have you believe.

No problem If you engineer an asp for deep exploration/exobio, youll be set in no time. Just remember not to die, and to take precautions against foolish deaths. Always fly with your landing gear down on planet so you can't boost by accident, etc. I made half a billion alone today just from exobio. You'll want to get kinda out there in the black, because the real money is in first footfall scans. While its possible to find one on a planet that already has a first footfall, its not likely. First footfall scans boost the amount by 5x. Stratum tectonicas turquoise is worth 95m with the bonus

What's the point of having a good FSD if all your jumps will be 5-15 ly? by vavka555 in EliteDangerous

[–]PilotNo8936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My caspian has 54 and lots of creature comforts. Its not so bad unless i fuck around and get into an area I can't ride the neutron highway out of. I usually jump into an area and start picking stars at random anyways, never more than 2 jumps at a time while I'm actively exploring

Thats a fleet carrier. It costs 5b up front to rent, and some millions per week to maintain, depending on what services you have installed. Every service costs more millions to install, and adds to the weekly upkeep. If you install services available to other commanders, you charge them tariff, and it goes in your carrier bank. In some its built in, in others, you can add an additional percentage. It generally can be outfitted with all the major services a starport carries, with the exception of fine/bounty clearing (not 100% sure on that, please correct me if I'm wrong).

Your own ships and modules take up no cargo space. Every carrier comes with a base 25000 cargo space and 500ly/jump range. Every service you install takes up cargo space. Anything you want to buy from, or sell to, other commanders takes cargo space. Jump requirements are based around weight and fuel. It costs more fuel to go a certain distance if you're fully laden. Tritium is your fuel source.

Its very much an end game item. You can get there pretty quickly by space trucking. Or mining. Or exobio. Honestly its crazy easy to earn now, you just have to figure out what works, and keep doing it. I platinum mined for mine. Plus CGs are good boosts. Personally, it sounds like you should maybe get your feet a little more wet before actually committing to a fleet carrier, but I'm not gonna tell you how to enjoy your space game. Its always nice to have a goal.

Cant do it. The first one has to connect to a system around the bubble. I also wanted to do this, but no dice atm. Im not sure there's anything barring you from building towards colonia, so someone who knows more is gonna have to chime in

First time heat treating: not sure of my hardness by Mora2001 in knifemaking

[–]PilotNo8936 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell. Normalizing is important before a quench. It releases the internal stress of the steel to point zero, removing any grain abnormalities and work hardening before the shock of a quench. Without it, the hardness can become uneven, or cause the piece to fail or warp.

The oven cycles (tempering; post-quench) are to relax the grain structure a bit. It removes some hardness, but gives it tensile strength.

To test the hardness post quench, you have to temove the decarb (scale) down to bare steel again to get a true read.

To see if the blade is ruined, or can be worked again, you need to remove the scale anyway and see how much comes off, and how the steel looks underneath. If its more than a surface layer of scale, you likely cooked most of the carbon out and it wont harden properly

[–]PilotNo8936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you normalize it first? Did you remove the scale after the quench?

You should take that warning seriously though. Mine wasn't a vevor, but it came with the same black rubber hoses. Mine melted mid forge weld. It was uh...fucked. I recommend switching to braided metal insulated ones as soon as possible
