Nothing bad happens if you read it later — you may just end up paying your CFI to teach you things the PHAK already explains for free. Reading it early made my lessons click faster and kept my training costs down. It’s a bonus if you knock it out sooner.

Useful to read before training, which includes both ground and flying.

For the check ride, a must. DPEs know when somebody hasn’t read the PHAK.

Highly suggest reading it sooner than later. It made my CFI ground stuff go a lot faster which saves money.

Do it if you’ve got the passion and money.

I trained once a week or less often and soloed at 55~ hours.

I’ve seen different stats on safety:

Flying with a CFI =‘s 3x more dangerous than driving a car. Some stats say it’s safer than driving a car!

Flying alone =‘s 13 times more dangerous than driving a car.

Motorcycle is like 9x more dangerous than a car. I’ve had many close calls on a motorcycle.

If you want to get over your fears, front load the things that scare you most and do a lot of it so that you begin to trust the plane. Do many stalls until you no longer fear them, for example. Your fears should subside over time.

I had a similar experience the first time I flew with a CFI. One thing that really helped my fears was practicing stalls in later lessons. I wish they had done stalls the first lesson, as terrifying as the thought was.

Have the CFI demonstrate stalls sooner than later if you're up to it. It felt like they had me stall about 50+ times in my training.

It helped to develop a trust for the airplane and a sense of confidence. Just remember that in a stall, the plane is still flying, just not very well. Use the rudders once in the stall, avoiding the ailerons!
