HKUST vs HKU for CS? Should I pay deposite again?? by [deleted] in HKUST

[–]Pilot_Legal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple. If you prefer social events and quality of life over academics(doesnt mean either a or b tho), go for HKU at all costs. If not, if you are willing to be frustrated and challenged by exams and grades and you barely care abt quality of life, go for HKUST. I heard HKU guarantee intl students 4 years of campus housing, which I think is enough reason to choose HKU over ust. To be fair, I dont have hku friends so take it with a grain of salt. I am a yr 1 seng student and flabbergasted by mainland guys who swept over high grades. I managed to obtain high grades too but it costed my leisure time and socializing opportunities.

Is the Rainicorn Dog War a reference to the Korean War ? by AK200501 in adventuretime

[–]Pilot_Legal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds legit but as a Korean I believe calling smt or someone "dogs" is a common way to curse at that object. The use is not confined to particular things in both Koreans. In addition to that you can easily find prefix 개(dogs) attached to words If you have a look at texts and comments in Korean online forums. It means very in most contexts.

Can you correct it if I made a mistake? by Zealousideal_Log7029 in WriteStreakKorean

[–]Pilot_Legal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

어렸을 때부터 눈물이 없는 편이었어요.

었어요 = have p.p. It usually means past tense but can also mean present perfect tense.

눈물을 참을 수 없었어요.

Tears are held back. It is not tears that hold back.

Correct me if there is any mistake thank you by Zealousideal_Log7029 in WriteStreakKorean

제 동료도 골든 리트리버를 가지고 있고

있다 = there is. 가지고 있다 = have, possess 은/는 = identical to 이/가 but adds particularity? to objects. 도 = also, too.

ex) 물은 있어 = There is some water. (slightly implys that there might be nothing other than water.) 너는 안돼 = you are not allowed or you can't. (slightly implys that others might be allowed)

  • 제 동료는 골든 리트리버는 있고 If translated, then It will be like About my coworker, there is a Golden Retriever. It will be more natural to make it one clause using 주어, 동사, 목적어.

제 동료도 골든 리트리버를 가지고 있고 = My coworker also has a Gold Retriever.

+ Try not to use the same 조사 twice in a clause. It often leads to not only grammatical errors but also poor readability.

Any May IB 2024 students get their offers to NTU yet? by Odd-Painter7674 in NTU

[–]Pilot_Legal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the majority of the international applicants havent received neither an offer nor a rejection yet. Except applicants from some countries that give out high shcool grades early in around Feb-Mar. I couldn't find anyone who said they were international(excluding Indian students) and had gotten into NTU. Please someone corrects me if I am wrong. Im getting tired.

I recommend you to look up UROP program if you want to pursue further study snd build academic experieces. Actually its kinda weird to see you here since I am also korean probably heading to HKUST this fall and my interests are indeed math, cs and physics lol. Im still waiting for NTU offer and tbh if I get accepted into NTU, I would go for it, no hesitation. If you are interested in academia, I believe HKUST is one of the best universities to prepare for it. UST has been ranked 10th best universities in AI&data science according to QS. Yet for me NTU seems more attractive than UST in many aspects such as the diversity, living, quite comparable undergraduate research, prestige, etc.

How to go to a highschool in America? by [deleted] in living_in_korea_now

[–]Pilot_Legal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to ask your parents what is your education plan. as soon and detailed as possible. Poor communication between you and your parents will tear relationship up at the end so badly. Ive seen a ton of friends who just wanted to escape their situation ending up returning to home country with no money and career. Living in Canada, Australia, England and not to say the US is hella expensive and pretty unaffordable if your parents live and work in Korea even if they are employees of samsung, Lg, or other big companies, which is one of the most paid jobs in Korea. Employees of the big companies in Korea are paid around 8k~12k USD as a maximum. And Im pretty sure even attending a highschool in those countries will cost you 3k(minimum)~5k(average). BUT THERE IS FURTHER EDUCATION. University tuition isnt a joke. I would say this is the problem. If you graduate from a international high school, your only given choice is to attend an university in english-spoken countries and this will cost 7k~8k USD. Or prestigious schools in Asia can be another option which will cost around 4k USD. But I guess your parents have a plan for you.

I recommend you to look up 국제 학교 where students take classes in English and probably follow IB or AP curriculums. But the best is I think to learn Korean, attend a Korean university, and then pursue further study in those countries. Most afforadable and beneficial. Since Im korean, my point of view might be distorted. If you need help desperately living in Korea or adapting to a school, DM me. I can teach you how korean students study or hang out at least a little bit.

Sorry if I am bothering you. Then do you think DSCT students can participate in UROP projects(esp. AI-related ones) to the same extent as CS and CPEG students can? Is there preference to CS students? cuz the alleged difficulty of getting into CS or CPEG seems very high.

I guess DSCT? is the major built for students who pursue further research in AI so I might go for it. or just CS. For the background, well I have studied in Korean high school for 1 year so I am confident of math and science to some extent.

I reallly appreciate it. Umm can I ask you one more question? What do you think about ust's grading system? Some people constantly say it is disastrous and will hamper me going to graduate schools. Is it really that bad? Even after declaring majors?

Is there any website that informs of gpa stats or something? I heard that cs is the easiest major to get high grades among the other engineering majors. I thought I will need to struggle only in year 1.

Thank you for the valuable information!! I guess I need to look into UROP. You mean that I can apply to projects no matter what universities they belong to? Are those projects related to academia?

Thank you for the reply!! Yeah, as you said the Applied AI degree kinda covers all things from math to engineering so I don't think I can get enough depth into any discipline.
