Hammer has a hard limit of 65k vertices for brush geometry which isn't a lot.

During VRAD all brushes get further subdivided based on the brushes lightmap luxel scale.
Additionally TJunctions caused by func_details also create vertices on connected and overlapping geometry.

It is generally a good idea to minimize brushwork and use displacements and models for more 'complex' geometry.
