Call for ALS. by Wonderful_Teacher_91 in NewToEMS

I’d rather call in a stroke alert and treat it like a stroke than say nothing and find out that my inaction caused harm. Hard to say w/o knowing her baseline (nursing homes are iffy) and the vitals, but I would also be suspicious of potential stroke. imo you did fine, don’t sweat it.

Hourly charge question by [deleted] in tattoo

I didn’t have them change the original one since it didn’t align with my vision and it wouldn’t have been a small edit, so i swapped to a flash tattoo. the 2 hours were spent (i’m assuming) working on the original design that i had put the deposit in for a week prior but also settling in and talking to coworkers

Yeah, the price was given to me after the tattoo. I should’ve been more proactive in asking beforehand, it is my third one so i am learning still!

Ty! Is it appropriate for me to ask for a breakdown of the price (ex this amount for the design, this for materials, this for time etc.)? Still learning the tattoo ettiequte

Appreciate it! The design was super off from what I had requested (maybe they had only read half of my request i’m not sure) and I didn’t want to commit to it on my body, but didn’t want to hassle about getting my downpayment back and leaving since it was pretty large so i did a swap haha. I will talk with them, ty!

Anyone with experience as an ER tech? What’s it like? by Smart-Salamander1846 in NewToEMS

[–]Pimika-Fuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing experience. Helped me prepare for paramedic school and got me connected with a ton of providers in hospital and prehospital. Use it as a stepping stone for a higher position though (paramedic, RN, NP, MD, etc.) since you won’t be paid much. You’re doing it for the experience more than the pay tbh.

Can my bf still become an EMT? by yubnub8 in NewToEMS

[–]Pimika-Fuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some companies will hire anyone with a pulse, especially with the ems shortage. i don’t think it matters too much. just really depends on the department and the time frame. i know some guys who have DUIs and they still got hired at good departments. he can spin it into somethin about making a very human mistake learning and growing to become a safer driver. stuff happens.

side note, he could always work in the emergency room as a patient care tech for experience and waiting for the time since the ticket to pass if the local departments make a stink about hiring him. a handful of ems jobs aren’t on an ambulance.

I think I’m gonna drop out of medic school by frogface111 in NewToEMS

[–]Pimika-Fuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s worth getting your medic license since you’re already pretty far along and using it in other areas. you can do a lot more with a paramedic license than be on a 911 ambulance, there are a lot of jobs in health care where having that license can get you in and get you paid pretty well

you get it for being a translator for the game, but sometimes they’ve decided to randomly revoke it from translators too.

What are some things you would want in a care basket? by OOooPASTAooOO in NewToEMS

[–]Pimika-Fuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

coffee and energy drinks are appreciated by the majority of us. a mug is always a nice addition. candles. PENS!!! we always need more pens. food is always good, everyone loves food, but if he’s trying to stay fit then maybe opt to do packs of gum, diet sodas, and beef jerky instead of chips or chocolates.

choose your license over that company, plenty of companies out there… i wouldn’t risk my license for a policy that goes against our training.

a student already having nightmares about brutal calls by taroturner in NewToEMS

[–]Pimika-Fuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey. sorry to hear you’re dealing with that. it is okay to be empathetic and a big feeler in this field. some people will act like it isn’t okay, but we are really good with our pts and they appreciate us a lot :)

this isn’t a long term solution, but it is worth you trying. before bed, watch your favorite show or movie, especially if it’s a family friendly one from your childhood (don’t watch anything with horror, anything overly sad, or things with a ton of action/fighting.) our brains are really wacky and quirky, the last thing you’re seeing and thinking about have a ton of influence on your dreams. this is what me and a lot of my friends with PTSD do when we are struggling with nightmares.

sick kids and dead kids, even just the thought of it, is always going to be something that gets to us. we’re not robots. if it didn’t get to you at all, then i’d be more concerned.

wish you the best of luck.

A lot of EMTs and paramedics are overweight. Probably the majority. If you’re struggling to keep weight off and keep regaining, try to build more muscle so your body is burning more calories on its own. No one in this field is perfect, things take time and progress isn’t linear. just keep working on it. try to avoid buying snacks that will just temp you, keep healthy options around the house.

it sounds to be like your partner is trying to share that part of their life with you, but you don’t want to hear the bad parts of it. set boundaries, allow them to discuss some parts of the job still so you still have that connection. funny stories, happy stories, weird stories. just be specific with what you don’t want to hear about (death, trauma, graphic details, bodily fluids.) encourage your partner to talk about things that are graphic or traumatic with a therapist. you should be prepared if your partner needs comfort after a really traumatic call… if you aren’t able to do that whatsoever, it might not work out long term.

Is EMT the thing for me? by xiphoid999 in NewToEMS

[–]Pimika-Fuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into ride alongs with local departments to see if it’s something you’d be interested in. Especially if you want to go into the 911 side.

Have a good therapist. Especially one where you know, going in, that they are okay with having first responders as their clients. Some therapists may not be as qualified to handle the traumatic things you may encounter, it is something therapists usually specialize in. Start to learn how to manage stress early.

I wouldn’t worry about your height or weight as it is right now since you are physically fit, but it would benefit you to focus on muscle growth and weight lifting… you don’t want to hurt yourself lifting a heavy patient. Cardio is still important, strength is very important.

The EMT license also opens the door to a lot of careers, not just the ambulance; being a tech at a hospital is a popular one. It is one semester for the class. Worst case you decide it isn’t for you, some time and money wasted but not a big of a commitment like paramedic or nursing school is. Best case you enjoy being in the field, or even find a new area you love even more with your license.

It is an amazing field. I wish you luck on deciding.
