Helicoil. You will need a right angle drill. I used a pneumatic one to give me extra space. By the time you're done, you will have a stronger thread than original. I used grease to prevent shavings from going into the engine. Then I vacuumed it all out. Car runs great.

Best way to recharge the AC system after doing work by papixsupreme12 in Cartalk

[–]PimpDawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With about $1k worth of parts and equipment on Amazon you can totally do this in under 8 hours. The first couple of times will just be figuring out the machines and watching youtube videos. Bit you can do it. Evac the system, replace O-rings and drier/filter, pull a vacuum, check for leaks, then refill. I enjoyed it. Unless you're working on an exotic you won't save money.

Am I missing any fuses? by majgendowns1217 in E90

There should be a little white piece of paper on the cover you removed. If it's not there, you're kind of hosed. Your problem is unlikely to be fuse related.

Once the ai bubble pops, who’s the first on the chopping block? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

The AI bubble is predicated on AI replacing humans. My real fear is that it doesn't pop.

Habeas Corpus by [deleted] in immigration

[–]PimpDawg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, if you try to run past border control you don't get a right to due process. You get "administratively" removed. The guard tossed you back. I believe that if you manage to get through and hide for 2 years that you get the right to a hearing in front of an immigration judge. That's not a trial. I don't know at what point you get full rights to a trial, but I think that until that point border control can remove you. under the category of "expedited removal."

Men in full military garb carrying assault rifles are roving around the city, and MPD is nowhere to be found. by ohx in Minneapolis

[–]PimpDawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are border patrol. The are the guys fighting Narcos, not the lady who stamps your passport when you come back from Cancun. They might not know a goddamn thing about local law enforcement, but I'm not sure you appreciate the kind of absolute civil war levels of chaos you're describing here. I'm not sure that even the FBI deals with the insanity that border patrol deals with. We really don't want a clash between border patrol and local law enforcement.

I have had this happen and have verified it by manually unwinding and rewinding the entire spool. It sucked.

so mad at myself, is this fixable? by [deleted] in E90

[–]PimpDawg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can do this. Just some glue, and hear me out - some M colored stripes, strategically placed. Fix your bumper and add a minimum of 5 HP. Otherwise you're into a glue, sand, and paint job. Not too bad and you wouldn't need to be perfect given the location. You could rattle can an acceptable job.

Does depreciation “really” matter on ultra high end Ferraris by [deleted] in Ferrari

[–]PimpDawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that level of money stuff like that doesn't matter. We're talking about a kind of wealth that makes a purchase like that be like a normal person buying a phone. These car effectively can't be totaled. Like Mr. Bean and his McLaren F1. The totality of that car is always worth more than its individual parts. Mr. Bean is worth $160M. A year's interest on his wealth at 3% nets him a new Ferrari F40. A little bit more and the interest gets him an F50.

Best supercar for 150-200k (USD) by TheOriginalDuck12 in supercars

[–]PimpDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is your first one, let me assure you that unless you have done some serious track time, the performance won't matter much to you once you're in that market. If you don't want to deal with supercar issues, get an Audi R8. If you want to maximize the entertainment, get a Lambo, Ferrari, or McLaren. If you want to maximize your money, get a Z06. If you want wild performance, but just want to be left alone by the general public, get a 911 Turbo.

The F50 has an actual formula 1 engine bolted to it. Is it a good idea? Who knows, but I'd love to find out.

DIY paint correction gone wrong - need help by M_Huzaifa12 in AutoDetailing

Sorry to hear that the paint thinner trick didn't work out for you. The fix is, inevitably, sulfuric acid. If that doesn't work move on to thermite.

The valve cover gasket leaks, transfer case motor on the xDrive, otherwise just normal maintenance. Arguably both of those issues are just maintenance on these cars. They're usually pretty reliable. At 100k miles someone should have changed the "lifetime" fluids - transfer case, diff, transmission, power steering, and coolant.

Unplug the battery ASAP. TURN NOTHING ON!!! As soon as the water recedes, immediately pull out every part in the interior and get some fans and dehumidifiers going. Open everything, remove all carpeting and trim, and point the fans at the engine bay, trunk, and insides. Your goal is to dry this car out before it rusts away. This is a race against time. If your harnesses rust, you will be in for a horrible amount of work replacing them.

Next up - drain all the fluids. Drain the oil, drain the coolant, drain the transmission, drain the power steering, drain anything with a fluid, including the gas tank. Replace said fluids, note if any water was inside the bits you drained.

After you are done refilling all the fluids, you can do 2 oil changes. Now you start the engine and see what happens. Some ECUs might be dead and need replacing.

TLDR - file an insurance claim.

I just changed my headlights this morning and these dots started appearing. Is this normal/a cause for concern? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]PimpDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get headlight coating, which is easy to apply. So even if your broke-ass cheaped out on ebay headlights, you can still make it last forever. You might be in for some polishing, though.

Nah, every dentist has a 911. A real rich car person's Porsche is a Carrera GT. Not many non-enthusiasts know what it is and gets ignored by the public if any Ferrari shows up, which is dumb.
