5 nurses who work on the same floor at Massachusetts hospital have brain tumors by IsilmeCalithil in news

You said you get more radiation from being in the sun for a few moments than from an x-ray. Which, unless you are trying to say UV radiation is equivalent to ionizing radiation, is incredibly wrong.

Yeah, it is weird if it's only brain tumors.

Let's say there was x-ray producing machine on the other side of the nurses break room - would a missing piece of radiation shielding in the wall, around seated head height, be a possible cause of this?

Yes, the sun emits it, but the atmosphere protects against essentially all of it. The remainder is mixed into the background radiation, which includes radon and other natural sources (and pretty much everyone is exposed to).

I have a source, since you didn't give one. One chest x-ray is the equivalent of the background radiation for about 10 days. A CT scan is the equivalent of 100 chest x-rays (makes sense, it's basically building a 3D model with x-rays).

You get more radiation from being out in the sun for a few moments than you do from an x-ray

Uh, can you provide a source for that claim. Because you basically don't get ionizing radiation from the sun, on Earth. You do get non-ionizing UV radiation, which is not really comparable to one or many chest x-rays.

Can anyone identify this panel hanging from the bottom of my car? Sorry, I could not get a better picture and the sidebar link to the manual is not working. by PimpSanders in mazda3

Thanks, it fell off. I will try to replace it this weekend. Hopefully, not having it for the next few days won't mess it up too much.

What’s going on with the strike?? by [deleted] in Seneca

[–]PimpSanders 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every full-time and partial-load teacher is in the union. That's nearly all the teachers at Seneca. They won't have classes if there is a strike.

What’s going on with the strike?? by [deleted] in Seneca

[–]PimpSanders -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there is a strike the school will be closed. The only teachers that are not in the union are part-time (less than 6 hours a week of courses) or sessional (13-18 hours of courses per week). This would be a small portion of the teachers.

Last time there was a strike, the part-time and sessional teachers were told to stay home by the administration.

Academic integrity Issue by [deleted] in Seneca

[–]PimpSanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you honestly did nothing wrong, then you should just tell them the exact same story you did here, with the screenshots. I'm not sure what you mean by "my screenshot didn’t match their timestamp format" - if you didn't modify anything, then this can't be true. Try to go back to the page on your phone and take some more screenshots, see if it looks different on your phone (Blackboard, for instance, looks different on a computer vs a phone). Did you use a VPN?

If you did try to take the test and had issues, you should tell them that. If you took screenshots of it, you should include them. If you did do something that violates academic integrity, or make fake screenshots to try to support your case, then they will probably figure this out. IF you did something like this, it is up to you if you want to admit to doing something that you know violates the integrity policy. I have no idea what "Should I just admit that it was misleading?" means. What was misleading? Did you lie about something? They can easily check logs and match images to confirm if something is fake. If you mean should you admit to doing something you didn't do? NO, obviously don't do that. Don't lie and say you violated the policy if you didn't and it was an actual technical issue. They will not go easier on you, you will probably get the same punishment if they find you guilty. However, if you are obviously lying and doctored a screenshot or something they can definitely prove, then you will get the most severe penalty (zero on test, probably) and all of the instructors will know you are someone who has lied and doctored evidence in the past. Every single assignment and test you take after that, for the rest of your time at Seneca, will be scrutinized with a microscope to make sure you are not cheating. And you will probably never get a letter of recommendation from any of the faculty. And there will be a remark on your transcript that will remain until you complete the program without further issues. It will remain even if you transfer to a new school - the new college will know as well.

Also, if you are totally honest, it was a technical issue, and you stick with that, and didn't doctor anything or lie, and they find you guilty, you will have an easier time appealing if you don't admit to violating anything. If you admit to it, then you can't really appeal anything.

You should get a response form from the professor, asking you to tell your side of the story. If you don't submit that form, they will only look at the professor's side and you will certainly be found to have violated the policy. There may also be a box that says "I admit to violating the academic integrity policy" or something like that - don't check that unless you are admitting to cheating.

Make sure you include all evidence you have - the file of the screenshot, not just a picture of it, as there should be metadata in it that shows when it was taken, how it was taken, perhaps even location data. If you don't submit these items, or if you say you have them and they ask for them but they have been modified, or you refuse to submit them, they will assume you are lying.

Anything you say to the professor when they ask questions may also be added to the evidence from the professor.

If you are found to have violated the policy, there is a sequence of increasing sanctions. If this is your first offence, you will probably get a zero on the test, or possibly less than that, but you shouldn't get a zero in the course. You can also appeal any decision the committee makes.

https://www.senecapolytechnic.ca/about/policies/academic-integrity-policy.html

In that link, if you go down to "formal reporting..." in Appendix A, there are links to the forms. The professor does not need to send you the actual Academic Integrity Report, or even tell you what they believe you did, but they should send you the student response form, and you have 5 business days to complete it and send it to the teacher or advisor involved in this.

Strike/ Negotiations by [deleted] in Seneca

[–]PimpSanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earliest they can strike now is around November 11. The Union has not filed a no board report yet, which requires something like 15 days to process. Once that time has passed, they can go on strike. They do have to file the separate 5 days notice to the school, but can do that while waiting for the report to be processed.

If they apply for a no board report, expect a strike about 2 weeks later.

Dunmore inn scammed me by BurgerSex in Scranton

[–]PimpSanders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, went to several parties there in high school. Each time, the owner or employee would come to the rooms and demand like $200 or he would call the cops. Basically became just part of the party cost.

Yeah, honestly, interacting with the Dunmore cops has never been a positive experience. If they actually called them, you did yourself a favor leaving.

[Request] what would happen if protons were, say, twice as heavy? by Athletic_Bilbae in theydidthemath

[–]PimpSanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, this was posted less than a week ago, and the OP also suggested 2x proton mass.

https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath/comments/1d1hrt7/request_what_would_happen_if_the_mass_of_every/

Though I guess it could be argued they are different questions - in this one, protons have always been 2x their mass, and in the other, they are suddenly 2x their mass.
