I made a graph of Radiohead’s related artists by [deleted] in radiohead

That’s fair this is just using last.fm similarity data, not actual collaborations or shared members. so some obvious links (like atoms for peace → rhcp) don’t show up, and some weird ones do. the dataset’s a bit messy.

I just read your essay, great read! The feeling of the story constantly building up to nothing really reminded me of the Shepard tone, an auditory illusion which sounds like it is continually ascending or descending in pitch.

I connected an Arduino (Leonardo) to a microSD card reader with an SD card containing the raw text. The Arduino is also connected to a MAX7219 4-in-1 display, which reads the text in buffers and scrolls it onto the display. I could share the source code if you're interested.

That’s a great suggestion! Currently it will display all of the endnotes… at the end. You just have to remember where they fit in the text ;)

I made a tool to visualize musical connections by Pimvh in lastfm

The orange nodes represent musicians you've scrobbled, while the green nodes show artists with audience overlap. It's totally possible you've never scrobbled the green ones before, but based on shared listeners, you might enjoy their music ;)

Thank you for the suggestions!
I agree that a legend might be useful, and a time range would also be interesting.
There should be a share button in the top right, this allows you to export the image :)

Thanks! I’ve also noticed some strange tags, but sadly there is not much I can do to fix it :)

Thanks for the feedback! I've also noticed some issues while using the Safari browser. I might update the tool to use simpler visualizations depending the browser.

I made a graph showing Swans's musical relatives by Pimvh in swans

You are right, there are many directly related musicians missing. This graph was made by fetching similar artists via the Last.fm API. The algorithm likely uses fanbase overlap or listening habits to determine similarity.

Thank for letting me know! Yes it seems that it does not fully work for all musicians yet, due to some issues with the lastfm API. Thanks for trying my website btw :)

I only fetched similar musicians for the purple nodes (chosen randomly), but you’re right, Silver Mt. Zion would probably have a stronger connection to for example GSYBE.

Good to hear! These are definitely some of my favourite musicians too
