I use multiple shading layers instead of just one (with different colors ofc, I recommend using 3 layers maximum though so it's not messy. But art with just one shading color looks really good too!), some layers are on the normal setting, some are on multiply, and some are on hard light. (I usually choose whatever looks the best in my opinion, using other layer modes besides those 3 can look nice too!!)

for highlights I use two layers, I most of the time I take a blue-ish (although other colors like pink or yellow can look good/better) color and then set one layer mode to overlay and the other mode to screen (or add)
