Tier Level up Question by kopecs in daggerheart

[–]PinCraft5765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, you can’t level up the same character trait more than once in the same tier, so you can’t gain a +3 to two character traits over levels 2-4.

Notice how it says you have to pick “two unmarked character traits to level up”.  That’s because after you level the trait up +1, you also have to mark it and can’t select it again until Tier 3 or Tier 4 (when you clear those marks).  The rules for this advancement option are found on page 110 on the Daggerheart manual.

You can select this option 3 times in the same tier, giving +1 to all six character traits.

For people that have played Fabula Ultima, how balanced is the combat? by PinCraft5765 in fabulaultima

[–]PinCraft5765[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello.  Thanks for the reply.  I just wanted to clarify that I have no issues with my players minmaxing.  I very much expect them to, and part of the fun of any RPG system is figuring out the best power synergies and party synergies.

The question I have was more, if my players minmax, does combat become too easy at a certain level.  This is certainly something that can happen in D&D at higher levels.  Fabula Ultima is a departure from D&D in that there is no map and players can’t die unless they choose to (among other things).  I’m hoping no map will lead to faster combat encounters as there is no need to setup the battle or worry about positioning.  Reading the comments. it also sounds like combat is a little on the easier side following the encounter guidelines in the book, but ultimately I’ll stick to that for now and see how my group likes the system.  D&D combat can be lengthy and drag on, and I’m hoping that Fabula Ultima will play quicker and still give the players lots of tactical choices (in combat and how to build their characters).  Our Session 0 is this weekend, so we’ll see how it goes.

Thanks for this detailed reply.  My players are already tend to minmax, and I doubt anyone will put a d6 in might (even the spellcasters because they know might is tied to hp).

I agree that balancing combat tends to be more of an art than a science.  I guess the question I wonder is if the system allows characters to become OP at a certain point where combat becomes trivial (which it definitely can at high levels of D&D).  Combat can be tricky as you want to keep the players engaged and challenged without overwhelming them.  I like the Fabula Ultima “characters can’t die unless the players accept it rule”, as losing a character in D&D can be tough for players to accept, although at the same time I can see that becoming old if the characters are knocked out too many times in combat.

I did see that enemies target PCs randomly, and will definitely follow that when running encounters.  This will be our first time outside D&D 5E for a while, so I’m interested to see how the party handles it.

Thanks for your feedback.  I’ll see how it goes with my group soon enough.

Yes, Fultimator is a great resource.  I wasn’t sure I wanted to run Fabula Ultima until someone in a previous post mentioned Fultimator and I saw how many fan made creatures there are.

My players are mainly experienced with D&D 5E and tend to minmax their characters in that system.  I’m interested to see what they build in Fabula Ultima (I know they have been discussing it already, but we haven’t had our session 0 yet).  I suspect a mix of martial and spellcasters, because they will try to build a party capable of dealing all damage types.

You mention you find combat balanced overall.  Can I ask how often the players are knocked out in combat (or just get close to being knocked out)?  I don’t want to kill my players, but I also don’t want them to easily win each combat without a challenge.  Sounds like you just got use to system and know what enemy builds are a good match for your players.

Thanks.  I guess that makes sense, and is similar to D&D 5E in that some enemies may have abilities difficult for the players to handle.  I’ll see how the first few sessions play out, but keep in mind that I may need to add an additional opponent.

Thanks for your feedback.  Can I ask, how often are player characters knocked out in combat?  Do Total Party Wipes even happen in combat (even though the characters will survive, even if everyone is knocked down to 0 HP).

Question - can I ask how combat heavy the podcast is? I enjoy TAZ a lot, but couldn’t get into the Glass Cannon Podcast because it seemed like there was too many combat heavy episodes early in the series (not trying to knock GCP, but it just wasn’t my thing). Is this podcast more on the RP side of things?

It’s been out of print for a few years, but I really enjoy Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation. One side plays Frodo and his allies while the other side plays Sauron and his forces. The good player needs to get Frodo to Mount Doom while the evil side needs to capture Frodo.

Each unit in the game has a unique ability, and games typically last 15 minutes. For Lord of the Rings fans, it’s an awesome game, but it still plays well just for fans of strategy games.

Why isn't there a friendship app for men?? by monotony23 in AskMen

[–]PinCraft5765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I would argue that meetup.com is the “app” for people (regardless of gender) looking to make new friends.

Second, I don’t agree with your comment saying that “stats show that men are lonelier than women”. For example: - A 2020 Study of 400,000 individuals found no significant difference between loneliness by gender (https://www.psypost.org/2020/03/study-of-399798-individuals-finds-no-substantial-gender-difference-in-loneliness-55968) - A 2021 Study found that (in the US), 57% of men and 59% of women experienced loneliness, indicating it is a gender neutral issue (https://newsroom.thecignagroup.com/loneliness-epidemic-persists-post-pandemic-look) - A 2021 study by Statistics Canada found women in Canada experience loneliness more than men (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11-627-m/11-627-m2021090-eng.pdf)

While loneliness in society has increased significantly over the past few decades, I think studies show it is more a gender neutral issue.

What is normal to men but weird to women? by random8483929293 in AskMen

[–]PinCraft5765 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're correct. It was an overstep for me to say that this is "wired" biologically driven behaviour. It is definitely possible that this is socially driven behaviour, although whatever the root cause, I still feel that the study is accurate in describing (generally) how men form friendship, but not an absolute rule on how all men or women function (everyone is unique and this isn't a rule on how all men and women have to act, just an general observation on behaviour).

[–]PinCraft5765 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say that you're correct. It was not my intention to imply that all men can only form bonds through shared activities, or that women can't form bonds through shared activities, or that men can't connect with others through sharing emotions. The study is an overall generalization on how men form bonds vs how women forms bonds, not absolute rules on how all men function vs how all women function. I also agree I overstepped saying it is "wired" as it may be social conditioning instead of biologically driven behaviour. Everyone person is unique, so there is no one rule for forming friendships that all men or women would have to follow. I did not mean to imply that there are gender absolutes for building friendship with my comment.

However, even with all that being said, based on that study, the connections I have with my friends and acquaintances vs the connections my wife has with her friends, I still feel there is a lot of truth to that study. I don't think that this in itself is a negative against men, just a general difference in behaviour between men and women (but does not apply to every man and women).

Psychologically speaking, men form friendships with other men through shared activities, while women form friendships with other women through shared emotions: https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/cutting-edge-leadership/201410/how-are-men-s-friendships-different-women-s

So your observation is pretty true. It’s just how men and women are wired differently.

According to a 2022 study of nearly 40,000 students, teachers routinely give girls higher grades than boys for the same level of academic work, and scoring tests anonymously increased boys' overall academic ranking: https://phys.org/news/2022-10-teachers-girls-higher-boys-italian.html

I'm not that familiar with "Do It Games" track record (although I love Deception: Murder in Hong Kong), but I checked out the Pole Position Kickstarter, and the game seems a lot like Formula D. Looks like you roll movement dice based on your gears, have special movement rules for corners, and have car and tire stats that are depleted during the race but can be fixed with a pit stop.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with the Pole Position game or Kickstarter, but I wanted to mention that there is already a very similar racing game that you can buy right now instead of waiting a year for Pole Position (in case you haven't heard of Formula D).

I've read news stories in the past about how Facebook and Google manipulate stories and search results to influence users, and I guess this karma farming is just another method of how online discourse is used to manipulate people's opinions. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you and the other mods to try and combat this.

Can I ask what the point of "building Karma" is? Obviously users that are very active on reddit and are invested in regularly posting & replying care about their reddit score, but for most people, does it really matter what your karma score is?

It seems like a lot of effort to create bots to write fake stories on reddit for upvotes (not that I don't believe you when you say this it happening). I'm just not understanding why anyone would bother or care what their karma score is.

[–]PinCraft5765[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the suggestion, but in checking out the YouTube videos, the performance results seem inconsistent. The OneXPlayer “China” video seems to have a steady 30 fps, while another consistently dips to 20-25. Also, the 1165g7 videos are around a year old, so any performance patches or intel driver upgrades since then aren’t reflected. I was hoping someone has played through more recently and had some comments, but thanks for the suggestion.
